The place that has the competitions has been running that for years. The contest is every Wednesday night 10-11 weeks (something like that.) First place gets nice $100 bill, 2nd gets a $20 "gift certificate" (bar tab, basically) and 3rd gets a free drink at the bar. First place is then entered into the finals and can no longer compete in the contest until after the finals are over, provided they did not win in the finals. $500 is the prize for that.
The bar owners are the ones who put up all the money for those contests, not the KJ's. So since it's the owner's doing, no one gets all upset with the KJs. I have won first place a few times, but never won in the finals. But those $100 bills sure came in handy!

There was this one guy who thought he was fabulous... he would only sing Robbie Williams love ballads... well, after he had massacred each song (and it really WAS a massacre), he would stand with his arms outstretched waiting for the applause... at first we all used to clap - same as we would ANY singer - but over the weeks he got so arrogant that, sad to say, most of the bar ended up totally ignoring him when he sang... or would go to the restroom when his name was called... or go outside to make a phonecall.. in the end, we moved to a different bar...
One place I go used to have this guy who may have been partially retarded... not sure, really. There was definitely something NOT RIGHT with him. I don't think there was an 80's song he DIDN'T know! He would get up there, sing his song, do his silly dances, and play air guitar in between. After the song ended, he would spread his arms out, leap off the stage and land on his knees on the ground, waiting for the applause. And he got it, but not quite as much as he thought he would. We all basically felt sorry for him. We knew he had something wrong with him and obviously had no idea he was so bad. He was amusing, though, that's for sure. I don't think I ever laughed so hard in my life as I would when he would sing 'Turning Japanese.' My eyes would water, and my sides would hurt afterward. At least he provided entertainment He was later "terminated" from that place. The owner said he was running people off by the things he did. Oh well... I'm sure he's happy no matter where he goes.

yeah, we had a guy like that too... knew every song anybody mentioned. I think he was partially deaf, and he could read lips...
had to LOVE his enthusiasm! I sing pretty okay, but never get into it like he did, or some others do. I just stand there and sing, enjoying the moment. This guy was an all around entertainer. Not saying he was good, but he definately knew what working the crowd was.
He was likewise "asked to not come back"... and the owner hated to do it, but it was for the same reasons. I suspect any successful karaoke bar gets those from time to time.
The one that gets me nowadays, and no offense to anybody who IS this way, is the Transv.... guy that's got better legs than all the gals, works hard on being "lovely", but has the deepest baritone voice you ever heard. He sang Kenny Roger's "Lady" once, and most people nearly spit out their drinks. He's actually a good singer... and we can deal with his "lifestyle" with a grin and a shake of the head... but he actually wants to go use the ladies room! The guys don't want him in their room, either! !
Fortunately, there's a handicapped restroom he is able to use. I think the day will come when he's asked to leave too! ! Oh well!

That brought to mind the guy from the movie "The Wedding Singer" - George who dressed like Boy George and sang "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" and then started back up with that same song again after finishing it the first time.... ...

OMG Matt... that reminds me of last Halloween. The club (a huge dance club with a Cafe in the front (Karoake room) ... had this huge Halloween contest... 2500.00 cash to top place costume. Wellllllll...... into the Cafe walks this rather tall "woman" .... who has on this killer dress (shimmer gold floor length--with huge slit up to the butt), stilleto heals, looooong dark hair... made up to the nines. Comes to the desk ... and says... in this very deep voice... "I'm CC Alexandria... and I want to sing!" I'm telling ya... every eye in the room was on me.... I tried real hard not to show my "WHAT THE F***" facial expression that was going on in my head .... and gave "directions" on what to do if you wish to sing. "She" flips her hair back ... and smiles.. and says... thank you.
Welllll.... come to find out... this guy is a major cross-dresser .... usually goes up to Montreal to strut I guess... but decided he needed some money.... YES ... he sang... and the room LOVED the act ... and YES he won the 2500.00.
The following week ... this rather short guy ... comes to the desk.. and asks me if I still have his slips. Mind you... I have no recollection of this person. I said.. "Your name?" .. and when he said... I think you have it under CC Alexandria.... I am SURE he saw my reaction.... I mean... I know my eyes popped outta my head. Looked NOTHING like the "woman" at all!!
Sorry to ramble... but your snip made me think of that.

ok I've read the thread.....and now I will prepare to be beat upon...
Quote: Average" to me would be *shrugs* yeah it was ok - didn't make me wanna scream, didn't make me want to hurl either. It was just "ok". I basically judge each song on their own merit.
when I rank a song I rank only that specific song....as for what is average, I thought it meant "in general"....as for those of us who sing in karaoke bars....I guess that it's different here....cause yes we have those who coludn't carry a tune in that bucket we speak of...but here in this neck of the woods we have quite a few really talented people singing their hearts out every night....
there are really talentd singers who can't preform or don't preform well in front of crowd of people....then ther are those of us who probably sing "average" that are more inclined to preform....stage presence I heard it called....
here at SS we can't see anything but a picture...therefore we are or should be more inclined to listen to the vocals and fealings passed on by the singer...
I have noticed that most coments a very favorable...even when I wondered if we had listened to the same song... ....
I guess I'm surprised that any of this is such an issue.....there are songs that if I sing them really rank below a #1......and if I deserve this rankin so be it....I'll try harder next time...
I like competiton....some of you already have picked up on this....but as I said in another thread...no one is forced to compete or be ranked as the case may be...I tend to ramble on....so I'll finish by saying that I believe I have heard some really talented people sing here and then I heard.....so I've taken the stance that if I can't say anything good I'll say nothing at all...then my comments won't stick out like a sore thumb....when I say I really like a subb....I can gurantee it touched me.....
ok I'm ready to take my beatin' now....whip away......oh and Gilly ...I love your humor....

Actually KKid - that looks like my quote that ya got up there & I aint going to do no beating on ya for saying your opinion. Melly once told me that "I'm too nice to make anyone mad on purpose" -- gosh I miss that girl and her frog!
Saying this in Gilly's mindset now: sorry if you were looking forward to a beating
Amazingly enough usually talk like this does end up heated, which is the reason for my first post on this thread, but it's been one of the most adult conversations I've seen in a long time . I haven't gotten the feeling at any point yet that it's become even a little warm.
It is interesting to see other people's mindsets as they are listening to songs and why some comment on some and not on others.
It's nice that you joined in the conversation!

I don't think anyone would want to beat you for this.... I think you are right. If you listen to a song.. and it moves ya... then you leave a comment and/or rank it. If not.. you move on. Nothing wrong with that at all.
Personally, I can always find something nice to say ... and I think its nice to at least let people know I've listened by saying.. thanks for sharing or whatever so they know their sub was heard and appreciated.
I RARELY rank anyone... (Just find it really hard, given the scale) But, if I do .. Im very honest. And I must say .. given the calibre of talent on here... most of my rankings are between 7-10. If not.. I just comment and don't rank.

I have only been here a short time....I was a regular for quite a while on the discussion forum....I very rarely give a 10....only becuse the word perfect implies a flawless preformance....my rankings are usually between average...and almost perfect.....if my thoughts are on a sub are less than that I usually won't comment...only because I can see that no one else does....go with the flow.....I just can't see how a sub which is average and even sometimes is really bad, gets a 10.....
as for likin' beatin's ......all I can say is "make it hurt so gooood"
I think ranking a sub should be an honest responce to the sub....how can you go wrong with that.....remember you don't have to be ranked....so if you ask to be ranked, I would think you would want an honest reply from those who take the time to listen and rank subs.....

Oh heheh, I don't seriously think the rating in SS should be changed to a '3-point system'. I just think that as 3-point systems go, I like Steven's. I wouldn't want to be narrowed down to that kind of simplicity for ranking folks HERE, but I do think most folks could be pretty easily sorted that way.

ROTFL
I have NO objection to being called 'dude'.. (or 'chick' obviously, and although chicks can be called 'dudes', 'dudes' should never be called 'chicks' ). Someone objects to being called 'dude'?? That's odd.

MAO. DAMN. (cleaning off monitor)
and you're able to return to that bar ? After being carried out've a place like that frozen in a catatonic state, I'd start having panic attacks everytime I got within a few blocks of that bar.

I have no fricking Idea!!! :p I mean, listen to the AI auditions (the bad ones). I can see how someone could be SLIGHTLY off-key or be missing something from their voice and just not know it, but to be THAT BAD?? Ugh. *shaking head in disbelief*

I agree, and there are certain people in SS like that, but I enjoy listening to them sometimes because you can just tell they are having so much fun with what they are doing. Sometimes, they even surprise you by doing something pretty well, then it's a treat.

Shotgun CC wrote: Yup~~ at our show.. we have about::

30% who are there to sing ... do their best ... have some fun ... and most of the time.. sound fine (well okay, some are better than others, but all range from not bad-good).
40% who are there because they LOVE to singing.. do it "good-very good" ... have fun and are really enjoyable and entertaining to listen to.
5% who can't sing... but LOVE to sing. They are somewhat-to-very painful to the ear... yet, add some "flavor" to the show. Yes, these are the few that feel they ARE pretty good singers.... They are oblivious to the fact that can't sing.. and often will be the "only ones" who dare critize another singer. My theory is ... If they can't hear the music and carry a tune... Then how can they tell they aren't on tune, ya know? They are singing it the way they hear it... so it sounds good to them.... make sense? (We even have one who can't "read" ... about one in every four words is correct... not an easy 4 minutes!!).
3% who are TERRIFIC singers .... take it VERY seriously ... know they good (but are very modest about it) ... and are a lot of fun to have at the show.
2% .... who should be under contract they are so damned good. And these are the nicest singers (as personality) go. They sing with EVERYONE ... and only God knows why they aren't out entertaining the world in a bigger way.
Wow.. so according to the shows YOU run, only about 25% would be considered 'bad singers' and 70% of the people are pretty good - darned good! That means the 'average' singer, is pretty good! I'm actually surprised at those numbers (not doubting you here, just truly surprised).
!!! If that's true, I've been raking some people I thought were 'average' too high! Certainly good to know though. I really should get out to more local karaoke shows myself so I can see what's out there!

Funny thing... this guy drank nothing but Pepsi. He was stone cold sober everytime. I've seen people drunk off their arses act less ridiculous than him.

I am new to this site and have not submitted to the showcase yet (as I am technically challenged and the concept of sending a song over the internet baffles and excites me, I'm easy pleased!!) However, I have noticed that there are quite a few members who are very friendly. So do you all rank honestly ? Even at the risk of p*****g someone off ?
I have listened to a good few of the submissions, some are excellent, some average and some downright awful. A good portion are ranked correctly, but alot are so way off, it untrue.
I would assume that is you asked to be ranked you would require a fair and honest assessment. However, like competitions I guess it is only someone's opinion of you and like American Idol some people would be really offended because they really feel they are better than they are.
So for all you members who have been on this forum for a while, do you think the rankings are correct and fair in general ?
Let me know what you think
