Quote: There is sooooo much variability between suck ~~ and not bad.
We disagree here Cindy, ANYTHING that doesn't "suck" is not that bad. I suspect I might have to add a level between not bad, and damn good
1-you suck
2-not bad
3-sweet
4-awesome dude*
No, not bad is also some form of average, it includes good
*Ibid- In the event older farts deem the noun "dude" gendre specific category 4 can be altered to "4- HOLY $#%&" instead
(The three-point system didn't hold up against staunch philosophical scrutiny Syber rumor has it there might be a stigma attached to one
of my earlier terms used too)

Alas... this has been discussed ad naseum, but we should remember a couple things...
Average karaoke singers at a bar deal with a number of issues in determining 'average'.
Are they singing drunk or on their wey?
Are they regulars or occasional singers at karaoke and/or other venues?
Do they sing outside karaoke? (Choral groups and barbershop quartets often have vocal instruction of some kind).
How is the sound system set up at the venue?
Is the person running it any good?
Is it decent equipment or crap?
Does the venue provide good acoustics or hinder them?
Is it live or is it Memorex?
A live venue has a LOT of variables that can affect the singer's apparent quality not including other variables like stage presence, personal appearance, etc.
When you move to the showcase you are dealing with a subset of people with enough cahones to get up on stage and sing. We're the people that are willing to record ourselves and then ask for the abuse associated with others listening to us. This would mean that either we are either above the 'average' or delusional and think we are. Add in friendships and feelings and it gets more difficult to be objective in your ranking of others here. We can review the ranking scales all we want and discuss them even more but rankings will always be objective unless we develop some sort of mecahnical ranking system that removes the 'human touch'.
As for having a sandwich with Gilly.... I probably wouldn't mind... but my fiance might....
Of course my scale would be:
1 - You killed something by singing
2 - I wouldn't force my enemies to listen
3 - You suck as bad as Ed
4 - You suck but not quite as bad as Ed
5 - You're ok but near suckage
6 - Pretty Good
7 - Schweeeeet!
8 - Damn! Did Gilly give you lessons?
9 - Almost as good as Gilly! Keep trying (as if!)
10 - Gilly

Lol... I am a photoshop addict. Took me under 2 minutes. Justy timed me. Lol, he was bragging that he would have been faster, the little nut.
The mister ed photo is the background. NExt, I took the sandwich, edited it off of the napkin, stuck it in a second layer, on top of the mister ed background.. and then I took my photo, magic wanded it, inversed it, and pasted it into ANOTHER layer. Then, went back to the background, and erased the people that were in the photo, trying to keep the wood going straight down... and saved it.
Posted it here. If you USE photoshop, you know how quick all of that REALLY was.

I have to now edit the area around my body and head. If not, people will doubt the validity of my photo ! Might even doubt my sincerity.
You know, I forgot all about the hamster being there. Didn't realize it until I pulled my head out

That's good. I went over the edge along time ago. Actually, I'm glad you're going to the competition though. You have an amazing voice. VERY talented.

I think Eddie Wilson (of Eddie and the Cruisers) put it best when attempting to describe the average performer...the term he used was "Not Bad"
When the performer asked him what "Not Bad" meant he simply said
"Not bad means if I was out somewhere and heard you play, it'd be nice being there....and then I'd go home and forget all about it."
Harsh yes, but I believe that can hold at least some truth to as far as what the "Average" singer is.

Unfortunately, there are quite a few "average" singers who win 1st place in competitions at this one place I go to. The judging is based on presence, voice and audience participation. So if it's a song that most people really get into, they're going to sing along with it and cheer the person on whether they're good or not.
I'd agree with whoever said that most karaoke singers in bars are 'average.' I'd even go so far as to say that most are 'Not good.' There are a rare few I've heard initially that were AWFUL, but would come back some other time and actually shock me with their singing ability.
My question, though is: Can the ones who are terrible really not hear themselves? How is that possible??

Some know that they aren't very good and they go up to have some laughs and have fun.. I love watching those people on regular karaoke night - not at a contest tho. It's so much fun for me to see someone just shed their inhibitions and climb up there and let it go. I sometimes wish I could be more like those people and just let it go and have fun, but I can't, at least not yet - I'm working on it.
Now the ones that think they are good but can't carry a tune, I cringe for because they are some of the ones upset when they don't get the accolades they are looking for.
Actually I think karaoke night where it's one great singer after another gets a little boring for me, I like the variety and like I said if someone gets up and does a song that's completely 100% out of there for fun and they know that they aren't the next "big thing" that's when I have the best time.

The ones who CAN'T sing, but think they CAN are the ones who I really don't like hearing. I used to feel sorry for them until I changed my thinking. I realized that they are entitled to have fun too, and if that's what they enjoy, more power to 'em! However, I do know of one chick who can't sing very well at all, and I actually heard her bad-mouthing another awful singer once. That was sooooo not cool. That tells me she really can't hear herself and has no clue that she's that bad.
I get bored with nothing but good singers all night too. My perfect idea of rotation is good, good, mediocre, BAD, WORSE. It's great to go up after a bad one. Makes you sound even better.

Yup~~ at our show.. we have about::
20 % who basically are there to just have a blast .... who cares if they don't sound good attitude. I'm here to drink and party... sing a tune... and drink some more.
30% who are there to sing ... do their best ... have some fun ... and most of the time.. sound fine (well okay, some are better than others, but all range from not bad-good).
40% who are there because they LOVE to singing.. do it "good-very good" ... have fun and are really enjoyable and entertaining to listen to.
5% who can't sing... but LOVE to sing. They are somewhat-to-very painful to the ear... yet, add some "flavor" to the show. Yes, these are the few that feel they ARE pretty good singers.... They are oblivious to the fact that can't sing.. and often will be the "only ones" who dare critize another singer. My theory is ... If they can't hear the music and carry a tune... Then how can they tell they aren't on tune, ya know? They are singing it the way they hear it... so it sounds good to them.... make sense? (We even have one who can't "read" ... about one in every four words is correct... not an easy 4 minutes!!).
3% who are TERRIFIC singers .... take it VERY seriously ... know they good (but are very modest about it) ... and are a lot of fun to have at the show.
2% .... who should be under contract they are so damned good. And these are the nicest singers (as personality) go. They sing with EVERYONE ... and only God knows why they aren't out entertaining the world in a bigger way.
We won't do contests. Singing is for everyone .... and we won't be a part of anything that pits one singer against the other. That's just our philosophy. We try to stay away from "competitions" .. and just be the show that everyone is welcomed at ... at any time.... and its a night of Fun ... (and anything else they care to make it).

When I said about the average singers at karaoke being awful, I was going by my local bar... where they truly are awful!!!
But hey, they have fun, so who cares???
On the subject of bad singers who think they're good...
There was this one guy who thought he was fabulous... he would only sing Robbie Williams love ballads... well, after he had massacred each song (and it really WAS a massacre), he would stand with his arms outstretched waiting for the applause... at first we all used to clap - same as we would ANY singer - but over the weeks he got so arrogant that, sad to say, most of the bar ended up totally ignoring him when he sang... or would go to the restroom when his name was called... or go outside to make a phonecall.. in the end, we moved to a different bar...
There's a lot of truly terrible singers at karaoke, but I don't think that really matters... what matters is having fun. This guy wasn't there to have fun... he was deadly serious. And his attitude was what really did it in the end...
Sad, but true...

You are absolutely right, Atomic! Fun is what its all about .. regardless of ability.
And ... I know what you mean... about "attitude". Some of those "I can't sing and I know it" folks get the biggest applauses... 'cause they present themselves as fun loving ~~ and everyone appreciates them for whatever they contribute. But when someone has that "where are my applause" attitude.. its the HUGEST turn off to the audience.... and ultimately... they only hurt themselves ~~ 'cause as you say people will intentionally avoid listening or just ignore 'em when they've finished.
I've often wished I could say ... "kill the attitude & you'll get more attention" ... but I figure they weed themselves out (or the rest of the audience does) eventually, anyway.

Oh my Gosh, Jason... the soundtrack from that movie is AMAZING!! Actually.... I'd LOVE to hear you sing "Tender Years"... by Cafferty!! Interested in that as a request???
I can live with that description of "Average" ~~ quite comfortably. My previous "reaction" was more about the vast gap between Not Bad --> You're Damn Good. I just think there is HUGE variablity in this region... and can think of many many subs I've heard that I wouldn't have been able to rank either way ... but rather, somewhere in the middle of that.
Also ... that dialogue at the end of your entry ~~~ Too funny!

The ones who CAN'T sing, but think they CAN
There is this one, who sang, of all songs, 'Amarican Pie'; off key by may be 1/2 an octave, and out of tempo by almost one line. The song seem to last 30min and the beer teaste flat after the song end.
Cant beat that guy tho am myself bad
