Something been buggin me for a while now. I know the rating system is gonna change so it's not really THAT important, but...
Ok, we have 'average' in the ranks... so I'm wondering, just how bad or good) IS the 'average' singer?? Can we expect the average singer to be generally on pitch, or off?
Do we hear the 'average' singer & say to ourselves, 'hmm not bad'... or 'Eww'!?
Anyone??

Well, I consider myself to be a pretty average singer...
And the rest of you are worse than me... So, maybe we should delete the scale, and make it "GILLY", and then, "EVERYONE UNDER HER".
Oh, let the public beatings begin.

Wellllll.....
I would say, going by the general standard on here..... the "average" singer for singers showcase would be pretty much on pitch for the majority of the song, and have a reasonably good timing.... cos the standard on here is very good....
This differs greatly however from the "average" singer in my local karaoke bar, most of whom couldn't carry a tune in a bucket

yeah, good point Jac... does 'average' mean, for SS? Or the world in general? (cause I've always kind of taken it to mean 'the world in general').

Are we discussing average singing ability of all people in general population, or the average ability amoung Singers (i.e., not including non-singing people).
I am an above average golfer, as far as the general population goes. But when I golf, my score is alway relatively high (bad) when I golf because I am with Golfers, not the general population.
I'm inclined to think we are discussing the general population.

Agreed.. I'm leaning toward 'general population' (at least that's how I've always tried to rank). But I find that difficult because I only have this vague standard in my mind.
I would guess that the 'average' karaoke singer, for example, is generally pretty bad. As Atomic said though, the 'average' singer on SS is pretty good (IMO). I haven't actually been to a lot of karaoke clubs or venues, so I'm not sure what average is!

OMG -in all seriousness - no I don't think so. When you say the "average' karaoke singer is generally pretty bad then that scares me cuz I've been told by a few people that they think I'm an average singer when I go out to karaoke. ohhhhhhh..... sorry peeps - didn't know what that meant until now...
A girl I know sings at karaoke and I've heard several people say that she's "an average singer" but there some songs that she totally kicks booty on. It kind of depends on the versatility of the singer too I think.. At least in my mind it does. If all they can sing is one artist, then I consider them average.
Problem is at karaoke night, people also look at stage presence somewhat. You can have a great voice but stand up there stock still and eyes 2 inches from the screen and I'd consider you an "average" karaoke singer.

Since this is a sliding scale, and everyone falls someplace between Steve and Gilly. It might not be advantageous to rank at all in here. Oh, btw "average" is a VAST area in this skill. Most in here are likely some form of average. however most that have congregated to this venue are VERY skillfull compared to what you'd find at your average local run of the mill Karaoke bar. So, who knows <shrug> Average according to what ?

I don't rank compared to other people. When I rank, I don't look at the numbers USUALLY either - I look at the words that follow the numbers.
"Average" to me would be *shrugs* yeah it was ok - didn't make me wanna scream, didn't make me want to hurl either. It was just "ok". I basically judge each song on their own merit.
Because a singer could do really really well on one song that it made my blood pump and elicited quite a feeling from me, but then their next song I might think is so-so.
I don't look at it as "you're an 'average' singer" -- I look at it as "this was an 'average' song" -- everyone can have off days and better days.

Well, I dunno Cindy, I mean... you have ears (lol) so, when you go to sing karaoke, are MOST of the people, pretty good? or pretty bad? If you're an 'average' karaoke singer, then the singers where you are must be generally pretty good.
Your points about 'versatility' and 'stage presence' are interesting as well. Being somewhat of a pureist, when I consider vocal talent, I ONLY consider voice (otherwise, it starts getting REALLY complicated ).
I've been told rather bluntly on here (by certain folks) that I'm an 'average' singer, but perhaps it means something different to them than it does to me. *shrugs*

I hate competition. <In a nutshell that's where I'm coming from>
I use a three point system when I rate, even listen in my head
1- You suck
2- not bad
3- You're damn good
