Quote: Shotgun.... Jimmy buffet has a singing ability? Well, he DOES have the ability to make me wince.. and, hell, at least he is consistant... even his live cds sound just as bad as his studio recordings.......
oh oh.. run, hide gilly...
My dear Gilly... no need to run and hide...... to each their own, as the saying goes.... but.... I do believe we were asked for our " personal preferences". Just making a contribution.
Buffet is great in concert!! Loads of fun.... Huge Audiences... Lots of singing along. Have loved him for years....
Guess its just one of those "subjective" thingies.

Envy? Ooo... there's a TON of female singers I envy. I don't envy the guys, though (perhaps it's because I don't WANT to sing like a dude.)
Female
Tori Amos
Sarah Brightman
Jewel
Sarah McLachlan
Janis Joplin
Eva Cassidy
sometimes Melissa Etheridge for her ability to growwwwl (I love that!)
Even though I don't envy the males, here's the ones I admire...
Male
Chris Martin of Coldplay
Damien Rice
Michael Bublé
Maynard Keenan of Tool
Scott Weiland of uh, well, formerly Stone Temple Pilots
Josh Groban
Jamie Cullum
Peter Gabriel

Quote: Can any of you folks post what the range is in that song? I've always wondered.
Easily Syberchick, (that is assuming I hear it first). I've never head the song. Yet I'm sure your hubby could tell you as well. He's a musician too. Just establish the key the song is in, and note the highest, and lowest notes relative to the songs key signature. Assuming nothing is technically modified that gives you an idea of the singers range in a song. On a keyboard this is simple to do.
(and now I have to write an essay)
, regarding the Jimmy Buffet, and actual singer portion of this thread. This really get's into another very interesting aspect which is an even different topic, and pertains to "what is a conventionally accepted good singing voice" and for this genre must be taken into consideration. You don't do a head to head comparison of Pavoratti, and Paul McCartney. This naturally would exclude the "non aesthetically pretty voices" such as Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, and Joe Cocker. These people all have developed their own signature styles that somehow nicely fit in with their style of music over time. Even though Angie, Ruby Tuesday, and much of the rolling stones content on their early album "flowers" is "pretty", to me, Mick Jagger will never have a "pretty" voice. We just learn to like some of this stuff, or perhaps acclimate to it. "Lay lady lay" from Bob Dyan is a very pretty song. As are many of Donovans compositions, yet can these two technically sing well, or do they have what most would consider "good singing voices" ? IMHO Nope.
This whole concept pertains to much of the Rock, and rock ballad styles. Some of the best vocalists for their genre, technically are crappy singers. Voice grovel, dynamics, will never compare to the quality of the pretty choir boy style, or technique of the opera singer, or pretty style of a Celtic ballad singer.
Similarly this is what surprised me about David Bowie. To me, most of his "top 40" songs except for the occassional pretty tune such as "Space Oditty" (whatever it's called) aren't aesthetically pleasing to my ear at all. Yet when I heard his duet of "Little drummer boy", I was floored by the choir boy type quality of his voice. He decided to incorporate his own raunchy signature style into the rock genre, and the cards falling as they did.... He made it ! Even the best female MoTown singers have incorporated a certain amount of raunch into their voices, or so it seems.
Jimmy Buffet isn't a technically good vocalist, yet his voice timbre cuts it well, given the nature of his ballads. Same with Billy Joel. To me, there is nothing pretty about his voice. Yet the combination of his vocals, and style really make "ballad of billy the kid", a gorgeous song.
Pristine, and polished aren't always "the best"... Yet still, I'd rather not expose my voice, if opening my mouth would create something "Dylanesque" in vocal quality

WOW...... Steps onto soapbox ~~ Clears throat ~~ ::
Well... suit yourself, Steve ... but my bf (who knows he's not a quality singer by ANY stretch) can sing a mean Joe Cocker.... {and even LOOK like him while singing.... } ... and people simply LOVE it when he sings. And Im sooooo happy he's willing to get up there and participate!! Who gives a rat's behind ... if he's "Dylanesque" ..... as you say? He's having a ball!!
Singing is FUN, steve! Its a way to express yourself... let go... share with others. There are no rules that say only "good" singers should sing. And ... THANK GOODNESS All the KJ's on here would be outta business in no time.
99% of us here... haven't got a prayer of "hitting the bigs" .... & I'd say 90% or better don't even aspire to (notice Aspire vs Dream!). (Ya, I know... someone will jump at those percentages, but I believe they are darn close to accurate).
But we all LOVE to sing... and have fun sharing with one another .. and in some cases some work on improving if that's something they are trying to do.
Believe it or not.. There ARE singers that sub here.... who are perfectly happy with their " Dylanesque Skills" and are just having a ball sharing. And they get tons of KUDO'S ... and rightfully so!!
So, stop worrying about the "little stuff"... and "take a swing". Feel The Fear .. And Do It Anyway!!
Forget all the "fancy stuff" ... and just kick back and Let the music move ya.
Life is short!!
Steps down from soapbox. Takes a deep breath. Feels Better!!

Van Halen? David Lee Roth? Eddie Van Halen? Sammy Hagar (or was he in Van Hagar?)? Just wondering... I'm assuming you meant David Lee Roth who was the lead singer for the group Van Halen throughout most of their heyday.
As for who I admire...
Guys - Meatloaf (damn that guy can sing!), Prince, Josh Groban, Robert Plant (damn! that scream on black dog!), all the guys in Boys II Men, Aaron Neville (those highs - wow!), Barry White (those lows!), Chef from Southpark (AKA Issac Hayes), Bing Crosby (one of the most natural vocalists I've ever heard - it just comes out), Louis Armstrong (incredible vocals - interesting vibratto), Sting (From pop to Jazz - a great vocalist), Ozzy Osborne (strange quality to his voice - hard to reproduce)
Girls - Charlotte Church, Johnette Napolitano (mostly for her lyrics that are similar to Jim Morrison's, but she has a 'Janet Joplin' quality to her voice), Linda Rondstadt (Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind - awesome vocals), Alecia Keys, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday (wow!), Elle Fitzgerald (double wow!)
There are others, but these are my tops... don't listen to a 'lot' of women vocalists and many of them don't really impress me. Yes, Mariah Carey has a great voice and a pretty impressive range but it grates on my nerves. Sometimes a performer's politics or behaviour gets in the way of my enjoying and/or appreciating their music (Jewel). Of course most of the newer artists just don't impress me...

Cindy, If I could do Cocker, I'd be thrilled ! hehe, I think Cocker is great. I was referring specifically to Dylan's signature style after the 60's when he for some reason decided that whining around what most would consider in tune, was acceptable. If I was told that I had a great voice for covering Bob Dylan's style. I'd be offended, rather not sing at all. Yet he is a gifted song-writer composer IMHO.
Yet you are correct, I am afraid to "let my hair down". I'd rather first learn how to do something, and get critiqued in private before displaying it in front of the whole internet to hear. Just the way I am. My own feeling is that a public performance should be a best effort, or near final product.

I was thinking of Sammy Hagar, at least I think that's who I'm thinking of.. I seem to remember being impressed with him (in his younger days) being able to scream out some really high notes (for a guy). Now granted, he's not 'that great' of a singer, but I enjoy the music.

oh yeah, Hagar can BELT out at a first tenor... Believe me, I've tried to do some of his songs.
He's also got some of the best vocal control I've ever seen. You can see he pushes it all the way from his gut!

Actually I think he is. In fact SH is sickeningly talented. An amazing guitarist, and vocalist IMHO. Makes me want to burn my guitars

I would also like to let all of you know, that PRINCE is CURRENTLY the holder of the World Record for most vocal octaves.
He is the man- he kicks alot of (@$%!) with his tiny purple boots.

As for most talented singer/songwriter/performer I'd rank Prince and Phil Collins at the top of my list. Both play dozens of instruments and are talented singers/songwriters in their own right. I'd add Don Dorsey, but he's more of a composer than songwriter per se.
There are others who are talented on an instrument or two and talented performers/songwriters, but not to the level these two (and a few others) are.
