I was talking to Jeanne the other day. And I told her that she was a ...7- 8.5 on the ranking scale, and that I put myself in the same place. That is NOT an insult.
I put out my best efforts.. well, at the time, and within my laziness... (who COULDN"T always do a little better. )(esp. with better equipment, backings, etc)... however, I can only acheive something that is the best I can do, and if the best i can do is an 8, then, that is it, and I would still share it with the world... some people have submitted THEIR bests, that were 5's, or 6's.. and that is THEIR best. and the 6 was really a ceiling for them. People like.. christirox, etc CAN acheive a 10, but, may not always (in my opinion), actually SUBMIT a ten... but they can actually acheive it, whereas, people like me and others can't.. (or shouldn't)
Ok, i don't know if any of that made sense, but basically, what I am saying is that yes, i DO think that people KNOW they are not 10's and STILL submit them anyways.. hwoever, they want the ten, because they KNOW they tried THEIR hardest... and, maybe that ten to them, is a 6 to us, but it is still THEIR best effort.

That's a great point Steven, and I think the basic word to apply is "ego"; and I don't mean it in the sense I meant before where I was using it more in the "id" sense.
Here I mean it that we all protect ourselves somewhat in most everything we do by really believing it is "special", "golden", "our best", "worthy of praise"...if we didn't, we'd have no reason to go on living and breathing. I think that sense of "specialness" we feel in what we do or produce is necessary for our very existence. I haven't figgered out why, but I just know it is. Someone more educated in psychology could prolly explain it way better. But I know what you mean.

Steven Kaplan wrote: If my assumption is correct. Is there anyone that wouldn't have hurt feelings if they received honest 4-6 ratings ? Don't most expect to receive a 9 ? I think it's important to have some understanding of the psychology behind this
When I subbed....I always left the rank box open. If someone gave me a two, fine....as long as there was an explanation why....seeing as that is a pretty low score.
However, I would not get mad, or upset...what is the use? I like seeing 10s, but god, I know I am not even close! I look at some of my old subs....the mixing...HORRIBLE...and I ask myself, "why did someone not tell me it was this awful" !
I never expect to receive anything. I like to see what others have to say about my voice, good, bad, ugly, I don't care. I am not here to compete....I only compete against myself. I can't control how others sing, or if they are better or worse than me, I can only do MY best.
I usually sub in one take. I do that for 1) Cause I am in the apartment, and doing multiple takes of loud singing would drive the neighbours nuts, and 2) I don't understand CEP enough to do punch ins.....or if I put too many tracks with too many effects, it is hard on the PC, and sometimes does not save, or crashes....and all your work goes down the drain.
I am sure, if I wanted to, I could take hours and fix every nook and cranny, and be perfect...like a pro recording...but I am not perfect, and I am not ashamed to show my imperfections, which is why I don't worry about what I submit....but on the other hand, there have been lots of recordings that I have just scrapped because I could not stand the way I sounded that day.
I am glad that I have "pitchy" spots, cause it shows that I am human like everyone else. I am not perfect, nor ever will be.....unless I spent countless takes redoing one line to make it perfect.
People seem to compliment me and enjoy my singing (unless everyone is lying to me !), despite my pitch imperfections or any other imperfections I may have, so I just keep doing what I am doing...improving myself until I am satisfied.
I sing for me cause it makes me happy. It is the one thing that I know I do well...and do it for myself. Does that make sense?

ritisroo. I like what you stated, to me, you have a very healthy perspective.
I honestly believe that on a really good day, assuming all the planets are lined up correctly, and pigs just happen to be flying, the best vocal submission I could turn out would be a "3" (and this is after alot of practice). I am the type of person that wouldn't turn in my best effort, knowing I "suck".
Yet from what I am understanding, many feel they are "OK" at best, and like yourself, genuinely do want honest critiques. I suppose aside from the "fun only" aspects. This is an area I have a tougher time understanding.

Auction -
THat's not true that we don't need info like what you gave. I think I saw the sub you were talking about - doesn't mean that you were "wrong" or that your opinion hurt someone or wasn't valued.
IF I ask for info - I need all kinds of info - what you hear I might hear too and what you hear might draw my attention to it. Just because some others don't comment on the same things you've commented on doesn't mean you were wrong at all.
The best thing I can say is that don't look at that word "CRITIQUE" and think CRITIC or CRITIQUE at all - think of what kind of advice you can give to help that person make that sub the best they can. If they tell you they've tried that before doesn't mean that they've taken exception to your comment. Just means that they've tried it so they are still looking for info.
OK? Don't feel bad about giving your opinion!

1. Quote: STEVE snip~~~ When I heard Jazzy do Anita Baker, the first thing I thought to myself was, "Are there actually ears out there, that can accurately constructively Critique that" ? I critique EXCELLENCE daily... so I'd say .. yes!! A critique is an "evaluation of a performance" ... if its terrific... that is how you critique it! Not every CRITIQUE has to have a "cosntructive" element to it. If you feel you've heard a performance that is at the 9 or 10 calibre.... you "critique" it that way ~~ as an EXCELLENT/ NEAR PRERFECT/ PREFRECT submission. If you've listened to something at the 1-8 level (in YOUR opinion) ... obviously "something" said to you... "this isn't a 9 or 10" .. and if you are inclined to do so... you then offer something "constructive" that might help the performance or performer achieve a higher calibre. JMO 2. Quote: AUCTION snip ~~~ I've noticed that when a song is liked there are lots of responses, and if not, small numbers of responses
I would both agree and disgree with this, AUCTION. I agree that some songs are listened to alot because they are good (or given the subber, assumed that they will be) ... But ~~~ I also think some are listened to alot because of the PERSONAL QUALITIES of the person making the submission... and not because its "expected" to be "wonderful".
Some people in SS are simply terrific about listening to many many singers ~~ consistently ~~ and when they submit ... I think people WANT to recipricate, thus they will have alot of "listens". I can think of SEVERAL submitters that have tons of "listens and comments".. who aren't TOP 10 or even TOP 25 (or who may never have been formally ranked).
So.... I think its too "general" of a statement to say ... People will know if their sub is good based on the number of comments .... because more than just "Quality" of vocals/mix goes into why SOME listen to certain submissions. Again, JMHO

Hey Steve! Could you elaborate on the "fun only" aspects and what you don't understand?
I'm really enjoying this thread!
And, Gilly you have hurt my feelings...I'll never sub another song again! You told me I was a definite 10!! Oh, never mind...you were referring to my looks.

Gilly, I suppose some of the ambiguity of this 1-10 rating scale might be due to the fact that a 7 to 8 in the professional singer industry might easily pass as a 10 here among the casual listener not scrutinizing the performer. I've observed that there does seem to be a tacit consideration in ratings that some in here are VERY talented, and likely have performed in at least amateur shows. Some are near, or as good as industry pro's too. My observation is that this has been taken into consideration by those doing the Critiques in here.
Miss Milo. To me there are clearly two different categories or calibres of performer in here. Although most are here for fun, Like in a Karaoke bar you get the people that just love to get up and sing, regardless of whether or not they actually can or should. It's all just fun among friends for them. They are the casual singer that enjoys just singing along to their favorite songs. This might be the group that should only have "for fun" adjacent their subs.
Yet what astounded me when listening prior to joining here, was the relatively high percentage of singers in here that are easily of the "star-struck" pro-amateur ability, or into the professional singer/musician level of performance (certainly that which is keeping these people from industry performing is not their singing skills). Some in here are EASILY as good as most in the industry. To me, this is a whole different category of performer. The category that I believe must be veiwed differently when critiquing, and I believe, that it should be understood when evaluating performances, that it's only fair to compare apples to apples.

jeanne.. you damn nut:)
Yuppers, a ten:) You are one hot mamma:)
And, If i were allowed, I would rate on personal best scale... like, I have heard you do BETTER, or, this is a vast improvement from your last... However, that is impossible, because not everyone knows everyone else:) SO, this is yet another reason why i DON"T rank:) Gawd, I have submitted some definite 3's on MY scale:) I have some that I consider a 10. Meaning that I put EVERYTHING I could into them, and I don't know if i could improve, therefore being a personal best for me... but,t hen i have some... where something went HORRIBLY wrong.. and someone should have offered to put me out of my misery:)

Steven Kaplan wrote: I suppose those that excel, can in this venue help others who submit what I consider the close to perfect performances. My thoughts were that there really isn't much margin for Critique on the actual singing aspects of the 9 or 10 rated submission, because at that level of ability there aren't flaws or technically discernible problems. Disagreements in style perhaps, yet just individual opinions, that might not at all be indicative of what the industry thinks about such a persons signiture style, and approach. It might be a "splitting hairs" type situation
Good point, Steven. That's why I try to critique independent of a person's 'style'... I stick to the simple stuff.. pitch, timing, whether or not they have enough 'power' in their vocals, stuff like that. I simply don't have the training to get a lot more technical anyway.
I have run into a few instances where I just didn't like the person's style, but I try not to let that affect my opinion of the performance. For instance, when I heard 'karma Chamelion' (sp?) done in a 'country' style, I at first ranked it very low... but I later realized that part of the reason I didn't like the sub was the 'country feel' it had been given, so I went back and judged it more fairly. I've tried not to let that happen again, and have even 'fairly' critiqued a few 'rap' songs... a style I generally don't like at all.
But, that's just me... When they get beyond the point where they are 'perfect' to MY ears, I have nothing to suggest for improvements. That would be anything I rank as a '10'.
Oh, you made hubby's day with your comment on his 'starry starry night' btw.

Anyways, that is my rant.
So am I!!!
But heck, you must have a VERY sensitive ear. I can hear if someone is off-pitch by at least 1/4 tone (or possibly less), but after you saying you had lots of 'sharps & flats' in your 'So Vain' sub, you must be able to hear just micron-off notes that are invisible to most folks. I'm not being sarcastic either!
So, just how sensitive are your ears anyway? ;);)

I couldn't get the quote thingy to work right..
Pretty darn sensitive I think! I've had her critique a few of my songs and she let me know of every flat, sharp, slide, whatever! It was very interesting to go back and actually hear what she caught. One of these days I'm going to work on it!!
And Gilly dear...I did not pay Matt a dime...just a few smoochies is all!!

Well, I had a lot of hearing problems for most of my childhood.... so my parents put me into music when I was 3-4 (piano)... then, on from there... I had a lot of ear training for music, etc.... and a lot of years being forced to carefully monitor the exact way I spoke, and how other people pronounced things, and how to make certain sounds... I also play a lot of instruments that are sensitive to being tuned correctly, and require user manual tuning (like the tbone)....So, when you picked out that out of tune bit, i was laughing, wondering how you MISSED all of the other ones, and by golly, that one was NOTHING compared to them, in my opinion...
And yes... I think I freaked out milo a little. Lol, however, i don't consider myself to be the average listener... and the things I picked out to HER would not be that obvious to others.... however that does NOT mean that i can SING in perfect tune... it just means that i HATE everything i do, when i am done, and listen to it.... CRINGE
