I did some research on this, and although I should have asked here first, my $20 buy it now opportunity on eBay was too much to bare, so I bought first and I'm asking questions second.

Does anyone have any experience with the HP external USB CDRW Drive model 8220e. According to a couple of different sources you can do 4X burn for CD+G and compatiblity with software for burning and ripping didn't appear to be an issue. It is also my understanding, on the other hand, that Plextor is the be all end all grand daddy big poohbar for CD+G copying and burning.

I got the burner exclusively to back up a couple of discs that are showing wear/damage and to longer term, start downloading from the CAVS site to burn my own LEGAL, can't stress that enough, LEGAL discs.

At the end of the day, I'm 100% sure I can recoup my $20 via eBay reselling it if it's a dog - so thats my story, was this a wise $20 (plus $10 UPS shipping)?

I don't have any knowledge of that particular model, but I do know SOME HP drives do read & burn cdg code. My Dad & a friend of mine bought an HP computer a couple years back - they had the same model burner. My Dad's would not do cdg's while the other would. I have a DVD200e burner that says it doesn't - yet one program I have recognizes that it does & I have had some fairly good luck with it. It likes the premium discs over cheaper discs - otherwise it garbles the graphics. So all I can say is give it a shot, if your programs see it & it works, then you got a hell of a deal.
But then again you can find a new Plextor burner for about $60 if you shop wise.

outdoorplaces, the HP8220e is a maybe case for CDG burning. I wouldn't spend the $30 on a HP, but rather buy the Plextor, KNOWING it will work.

No promises but it appears that it will work according to MTU.

http://forum.mtu.com/archive/index.php/t-184.html

This is about a problem with the ASPI layer causing it to NOT work except with one program so I'd read up on it first.

The main drawback is that it's a USB 1.1 device so you're looking at close to 20-30 minutes per disc. To do a disc or two shouldn't be a problem but if you're going to be doing much with them at all I'd get something MUCH faster.

BTW, I have the Sony DRU-710A Dual Layer DVD burner ($100) and it does CDG's just fine. Takes about 5-6 minutes per disc.

And yes, Plextor is the undisputed king of burners and has been for at least 4-5 years hand down.
