Hey guys, if anyone else is having the same problem I've been having, namely, your PC is running slow as hell, I ran the disk cleanup utility last night on my PC and found over 5 gig of temporary files, mostly from SS mp3 files. Yikes! Since I deleted them, and defragged my drive, the PC is running fast as ever, plus I have a brand new 5 gig of disk space to play with :)

Just a little hint :)

Jason

I'd add a couple more things:

1.5 Run update on any other applications (specifically Microsoft Office and similar larger, frequently used applications)

3.5 Update and run spyware application(s)

There is a worm propogating on the Internet right now that attacks phpBB. While that doesn't affect home users, it does affect this board (it runs on phpBB). Ever infected machine on the planet is searching google, yahoo, aol, and other search engines looking for machines running the infected version of the software. Because the site is popular it's hit frequently - to the tune of over 500 connections earlier this morning.

I'm sure that has something to do with the slowness of the forum. Until everyone gets their servers patched (takes only a few minutes - just modify a single file) and the worm removed they will continue to infect machines which are slamming this site (among others). It should start to clear up before much longer though.... (next couple days).

oh and just FYI, when deciding to clean your hard drives up, be sure to not use the dishwasher... I lost 5 hard drives before I figured the problem... always wash them in warm soap by hand and towel dry... some hot cocoa and a fuzzy blanket pulled directly from a warm dryer will have your hard drive up and running better than it ever has before... -tig

The patch only applied if you are running a phpBB forum. The modification is to a single file and the information is on phpBB's website.

Also a good idea to delete your temp files and temporary internet files.... (2 different folders). I do that nightly ... and it helps keep things running a bit better.

Also..... always do a Control-Alternate-Delete command... and be sure that there are no "unknown" programs (some are Spyware) running on your computer. They are often running without you even knowing they exist.. and if they are "communicating"... will slow stuff down alot too.

Defrags are a must... I do one weekly. And remember... as soon as the Defrag is complete... always do a reboot... before doing anything else. This "hardens" the data as its been reconfigured during the Defrag.

Good Luck All ~~ Cindy

karaokemeister - Thanks I implemented that! Excellent info.

Also I found another "glitch" that was resolved by modifying the htaccess file.
Code:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^(.*)highlight=\%2527 [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_COOKIE}% s:(.*):\%22test1\%22\%3b
RewriteRule ^.*$ - [F,L]
This prevented the worm from constantly accessing the forums.

Also, we installed several different security measures.

Shotgun - Good advice! I tell all my clients about those as well. I do defrag monthly.

For the lazy people out there like me, you can use the Windows Scheduler to do the Disk Clean-up/Defrag according schedule.

Start»Programs»Accesories»System Tools»Sceduled Tasks
Select Add Scheduled Task
Select Disk Cleanup and make your personal selections from there. Now you don't have to remember!

Great Idea!

Also, try running that at a time when you are not going to be using the computer! That way it doesn't interupt your using it.

I know when I run defrag it can take over an hour on one of my computers.
