I used to have all my discs in the slim jewel cases but am moving to a rack solution before I go completely digital late this year. In the meantime I have them in binders which I can take with me to a show. The back of the binder has a zippered pouch that I can easily fit 3-4 slim jewel cases in. I would never dream of handing a disc that wasn't in a jewel case to a kj. There are some I wouldn't let them handle one of my discs even if it was just to hand it to them to put in the player.

Quote:
Never deny anyone that brings in their own even if you "think" you have the best version, reason being is that their own disc may have the version that THEY are used to.

I usually ask that they try my version first if they haven't before. There have been cases where I've been asked to use thier SoundChoice disc and I have the same SoundChoice track on a different disc (usually in the Foundation Series) or they find the version I have is better after they sing. I still prefer the AH8001 track 11 "What A Wonderful World" over the Sound Choice version, but only because that's what I started with. The Sound Choice is a 'better' track, but even after doing that song on at least 5 different manufacturers I still prefer the AH8001 (which I need to find). Because I know how it feels to 'prefer' a version I understand and play their version if they ask.

Why not? I was only beat to death a couple times over.... we could always beat on it some more! Over-tenderized deceased equine is always a tasty treat... NOT!

Never feel uncomfortable asking your host a question like that. You will know what kind of person (& probable host) they are after the first question & that actually may determine whether you'll want to remain at the show or not.

True, very true....

these are my guidlines about bringing your own discs.

- you (the disc owner) assumes all risk. I (the KJ) will treat your disc as well as i treat my own.
- discs need to be in a sleeve or a jewel case
- please please if you are going to bring your own discs, please follow the rule of bring one sing one, i just cannot deal with tons of discs that aren't mine in my zone
- be sure your slip matches your disc.
- if it is dirty, clean it yourself, or have me
- as long as it plays i could care less what it is, burnt, boiled, freeze dried, or original; i could care less
- remember where you left your disc, i am not baby sitting them, if you forget them, too bad (ok i might walk them out to you, or put them in my case and get them back to ya - I do know my singers)

You must have missed the never ending thread on scum sucking patrons who bring burned discs made from tracks off the internet, which quickly dropped into multi-riggers and the continual degradation of the karaoke business for 'honest' kj's.... it wasn't pretty...

karaokemeister,

I may have seen it, what I didn't know was the fact that it was a taboo subject... Then again, not everyone has seen all the posts.

and that's a good, and very valid point Susie!

We old foggies have to remember that not everyone has read all that's in the archives, or in older parts of the website!

If you bring a disc to me I will try to duplicate real quick why your not paying attention. I am sorry I cant help it. Its a disease and it's called piracy. It all started on a cold winter morning. The dew was still on the ground and the smell of lilacs was in the air. A brisk wind was whipping through the trees anddddddddddddddddd......Oh I'm sorry I cant play your burned disc my player has a chip that does not allow cdr's to function. 99% of these singers find another song to sing. The other 1% ( PIRATES ) snivel and complain and threaten and make a stink. I hold my ground firmly and still manage to have SRO crowds EVERY night. good night

karaokemeister, Full House Entertainment, knightshow, metalgod, I love you all but in no particular order!

True, it was a fun, extremely heated and debated discussion about the burned disks, and in the light of the Christmas spirit, I will happily start a good old clean fight again. Please no blinkies, just naked fists and all shots above the belt.

Oh, I miss the days of real discussions......................

There are no taboo subjects. You just brought back fond memories of real discussions.

By admitting and not denying you have already taken the first step to being cured. :D

Getting back to the topic...I've been told that how I handle my own discs is helpful to the KJ - let me know what you guys think. I have several clear plastic sleeves, culled from an old binder (disc condoms), that I've written my karaoke name on with a laundry marker (Mike C). I've also taken the time to mark EVERY one of my discs with my initials with the same marker. I hand in only one disc at a time with the slip tucked into the sleeve. Seems to work pretty well.

Come now Allstar...
I'm getting anything but soft. I still abhore multiriggers, pirates, and other lowlifes as much, if not more than most. I even went through my hard drives the other day making sure ALL the tracks I had used to review manufacturers before purchase were gone. I've even gone to the point of redownloading/sorting all my music from eMusic, re-ripping my cd's, and other bought music so I can track where it came from if asked. Since I'm starting to market myself more aggressively I'll be drawing some attention to myself and I don't want there to be any doubt that ALL my music is 100% legal. BTW, I've NEVER used a karaoke track in ANY show that wasn't legal.

The discussion on playing burned discs was pretty heated and some people were stubborn regarding some of the issues. Some were hardheaded to the point it almost appeared they were unwilling to listen to the other sides arguements other than to lash out in defense of their own viewpoints.

I don't consider the subject taboo... just that it was beat pretty hard into the ground... I do miss a good heartfelt debate on subjects... but I am glad the lawsuit threats are gone... those really got on my nerves...

One of our regulars does the same thing... It makes it easy on us to return the disc to the rightful owner!! We/he keep the same slip in the sleeve so he doesn't have to fill out a new slip each time.

I had a "Singers CD" nightmare awhile back.

For a friends birthday I went to play at an Elks Lodge that had their own karaoke player and very few CDG's. He was all excited because he new all the singers there would really appreciate my selection. He told me lot of the members were really into singing and he knew of at least two other birthday parties that were going to be there that night.

I was not aware how they ran their weekly show so here I came, three jukebox players (did I mention that I HATE to handle CD's) full of CDG's, lights, sub's, etc. ready to put them on a show. WRONG. To compensate for the very small amount of music owned by the lodge almost all of the singers had their own discs. The room filled up and you would not believe all of the CD carrying cases on every table.

Within minutes I had 30+ CDG's stacked up, most without jewel boxes or sleeves, with just the owners name on them, some of the singers brought up 5+ discs. I'd ask for a slip and they would just say, "when you get it loaded tell me which disc it is and I'll tell you which track to play".

That's the way they do it every week, blew my mind. A disc now and then isn't a big deal but this was overwhelming. Talk about a long night.

Shame on me, after about 15 songs I told them that my cd player broke and the jukeboxes were full, sorry, they needed to pick out their selections from my book. I've never been invited back, I really enjoyed the people, really hated all the CDG's. Kinda glad they haven't called

:D

the singers should have used some common sense and common courtsey. they should have sleeved their cd's and had a slip in each sleeve, and should only bring one sing one

BTW: Elks, Eagles, Moose lodges, VFW's, American Legions, AMVETS, etc... all are very very political, if one person high up does not like you, you will never play there until that person is no longer there.

I had a business partner, who was also my mom's fianceee who helped get me started and doing gigs, he booked em, and i performed them..... I would have regular bookings at those kinds of places, when he passed away in 2002, the clubs just stopped calling, even though i was still doing the DJ and Karaoke stuff; and the gigs i did have booked, mysteriously got cancelled without a reason. In one summer i lost close to $700 through cancellations (reason why i now use contracts on everything)

I will say that every time but once I've allowed someone to bring their own cdg. I don't really care. The one time though this lady brought in someone else's entire CD case and karaoke books. I told her flat out that I didn't want that around my show. I told her she could sing a song if she wanted to sing a song out of those cds, but I wouldn't be responsible for it. And I can't have it up on stage. Plus I really didn't feel like promoting that guys show. For some reason this lady got upset. Whatever. KJs got to lay down the law sometimes.

Speaking of laying down the law... This lady is a real pain in the a.. sometimes. When I'm in this certain town she always comes down. This is cool, but most the time her behavior is like a 5 year old. I'm pretty laid back, but one of my policies is no drinks on the kj table. Now the reason is quit simple. I don't feel like ruining $2000 or so of stuff. Well guess what. Yes, you guessed it. After me telling this girl repeatedly that I would really appreciate her cooperation with putting her drink somewhere else, she does it anyways and a full jack and coke spills right beside my equipment. Luckily I was there and fear took over. I stopped the mess from doing any damage. I was so fuming I think my head was going to pop off. I think it's pretty sad it had to come to that with this girl. Total ignorance.

This girl also almost drunkenly knocked down one of my 80 lb speakers in her drunken state. I tell you what I like karaoke, but it is kind of annoying when people get so faced they start breaking other peoples equipment and acting like a 3 year old. Anyways that's my five minitue rant for the day. Merry Christmas everyone.

i don;t ask them to remove their drinks, i remove it for them, i will take it right to the bar and have it dumped

If she is that drunk, don't let her up there; plain and simple, if you are that drunk, you are too drunk to sing

I don't allow drinks on the KJ table either and it's your show so you have to make the call as to whether you allow them to sing. I have some people that are still careful even though they can barely stand up and others that I won't let touch the mic in the same condition (blowing into the mic, screaming at me/into the mic, etc).

There are a couple shows that I've taken my cases to (2 cases of 128 each, about 250 cdg's) and a single book without any outside markings. I don't advertise myself at these shows, always go to the show without them first (to see if I need to bring my discs for lack of music) and always ask the kj if I can bring my own discs. I'm not there to pimp my show, I'm there to sing and have a good time. If they ask me not to bring my books again I don't and take them to my care right then. I've had a couple people ask me about my discs (maybe 2-4 over 6 months) and usually it was because they saw I had discs and they wanted to know if I had a track the local place didn't. Only once was I asked if I hosted. As it turned out they are a firm that was in the area recruiting for someone to host some local shows.

Bascially, courtesy goes a long way - drunk or not. If you're not courteous to me, the other patrons, the staff or the equipment then I don't let you sing - period.

MMMMM...

We own about 1400 songs....and we are not KJs....we are singers....that's what we do....

we are contests junkies.....heard us refered to as contest whores.....

we use our own disc, when we are allowed, because it is the version we are most comfortable with....

we have seen it all...from those KJs who don't mind holding our entire case...so no one takes our investment.....honky tonks can be a little rough from time to time...

to those KJs who refuse to let us use our own....a lot of the stuff I sing is rare ( hard to find).....or if it's a contest, well it's just not fair......blah blah blah......

we have been told we were spoiled....we have been told we take it all too seriously...after all it's just karaoke.....but some to some of us it's not just karaoke, it's our passion....to quote a movie, "it's a way of life"....

like in anything else there is good and bad....Kjs are no different....some are easy to work with and others aren't....that's just life.....oh yes the same goes for us spoiled singers as well.....

as for burning disc's....anyone want those cassets i copied from best friends thirty three and a thirds....it was pirating then...but no one seemed to care....that horse has been beat into tiny little pieces...it's not tender ...it's liquid now....

all I want to do is sing....and believe it or not I got a pretty good idea which version is best for me....oh and also how high to set the reverb, bass and such....one size dosn't fit all...

now that I said all this maybe I should hide....MMMMM
