What I usually do is connect my mic to my mixer. Connet the music from the computer to the mixer. Connect the headphone to the mixer. Now I have real time monitoring with no latency and voice in both ears. I then use a direct out on the mic channel strip to connet back to the computer sound cards line in. That connection needs a 1/4" to 1/8" unbalanced cable. You can get that in Radioshack or any pro-audio store.

In my opinion this is the best way of performing home recordings using the low noise balanced mic pre-amps of the mixer rather than the lousy mic pre-amp of the sound card.

Apart for a couple of the cables you should have all the gear: mixer, xlr cable, mic, stand, headphones.

Cheers,

Morten

Oh and btw. you can buy an xlr to 1/4" cable for $15. Then you just need at 1/4" female to 1/8" male converter to connect your real mic directly to the sound card. Though the configuration mentioned in the previous post is much preferable.

Since I've now seen the mini-karaoke machines (for $30), I'll probably grab one of those when I get a chance (and some extra cash) and experiment with that. I figure I can always return it if it totally sucks ;)

Thanks Morten :) Actually, the one piece of equipment we still lack is a mixer  It's next on our list. That's not such a bad thing performing because we can get our levels set well through our PA and the amp, but for recording it sucks. Maybe santa will bring us one... ::big laugh::

I wish!! xlr to 1/4 cables are around $30 each here.. not much competition unfortunately. :( We SO miss the 'Guitar Showcase Consignment Shop' back in Santa Clara... ugh!!

When we had money, we picked up all of our equipment there (aside from the POD which we had to buy new $$$).
