Hi! You asked what 'tonality' is.

We just recently had a thread going into fairly good detail on that subject and I tried to find it, but realized there is no 'search' function in the forums!!

Well, I'll go ahead and say what I can about it. Maybe Jazzy will also come back and put in some more info as well, like she did last time.

Tonality is basically the same as Timbre. It means the actual sound your voice has, whether it's 'lyrical' - light and clear, or (can't remember the correct word) dark and smoky, or anything in between.

To give some examples, the girl who sings 'There She Goes' with Sixpence None the Richer, has a lighter tone than say... Annie Lennox.

A person can 'darken' their tone by opening their throat more and using more diaphragm when they sing. Anyway, I liked your tone. :) Hope I didn't ramble too much!

Actually Syber.. I hope you don't mind me saying, but "tonality" refers to the relationship between the notes in music.. Like when you say I am in a major tonality or a minor tonality. Tonality has more to do with theory and modes of scales..

You were right to say "timbre" .. That's a better word to use that more aptly describes what you were trying to say. Timbre is quality of sound or you can just say tone... Dark tone, Light tone, thin tone.. etc. Tonality is something totally different..

Please don't be offended that I answered here.. I'm not meaning to contradict you.. I merely wanted to clear that up! Keep up the good constructive remarks!

Anyways.... I for some reason ALWAYS prefer the darker sounding rich, smoky voice, over anything light, and... like your example of Leigh Nash (the sixpence chick). But, that is just me babbling. However, You aren't STUCk with ANY particular "Tone". Just like I can take my tbone, and make it sound jazzy and BARKY Blaring, i can also make it sound sweet and french horn like. I think people get stuck in this idea that they are stuck with the voice they are born with etc.... when, you can actually take CLASSES in changing even your SPEAKING voice, etc.

Ok, why did i decide to babble here?

Oh, yeah, the movie store didn't have ANY kids movies!! And the other one was TOO far to walk through 4 foot snow. kill me.

Right on Gilly... I often hear people who say things like.. "this is just my voice".. "I can't change the way it sounds". It's just not true and frustrating to hear. The reality is that you CAN shade your tone darker or lighter than what you normally sing. If you are a high tenor you're not gonna sound deep and rich like barry white, but you can always get a couple shades darker than your usual or lighter.

People who say they CAN'T change the sound of their voice either don't know how, don't want to take the time to experiment and find other ways of singing, or are content with how they sound and don't want to bother.. It's not that they don't have the ability. We can all do it.. it's just whether or not we want to take the time to play around with that or get help from a teacher to do that..

"right on":)

I like that:) And yes, I LOVE to play around with my voice:) I love to hear different sounds etc. Make my tone lighter and more playful, add a fast vibrato, and sound completely different. Or turn it the other way around, and do a tracy chapman style sound... I never knew that OTHER people didn't play around with how their voice sounds. (well, you do, jazzy, and i love the stuff ya come out with, and still sound.. like you). Mind ya.. i don't know what my completely naaaatural voice sounds like, because, I sound different from day to day.. and it all depends on the style of music i am singing... Even if I am not doing it well:) You all should HEAR the clips I end up with sometimes, trying crazy weird songs:) lol (well, you HAVE heard some of em:)

Ok, Husband is home from exams, off in the car to the BIG movie store:)

No problem Jazzy! Thanks for straightening that out. I was afraid I was using it incorrectly, but the only references I had been able to find sort of lumped them together, thus my 'ass-umption' that they were the same or very similar.

Thanks again!!!

So do I, but then again that's just a personal preference. If a person REALLY wants to hear a light 'TIMBRE' (ahem), listen to the old recordings of the castrati (ouch!!). I guess they were 'clipped' primarly to keep that light timbre in their voices.

You... babble? Never!!! ;)

Gilly wrote:

Absolutely. I think most people (as Jazzy was saying) have a misconception that they are born with a whatever voice comes out of their mouth the first time they try to sing, and that simply isn't true. It also isn't true that people can't (double negatives all over the place) improve their ear for pitch.

Of course, there will always be folks who have natural ability, and with propert training, those people will become the very best singers. Then there are those who will never be 'great' singers despite years of training, but no matter what our level of natural ability, we can always improve ourselves with practice and help from others with experience in the field.

Love talking to you guys!! :)

Thanks for all the great info, guys!! No one has ever really taken the time to explain all that before, I just kinda had to watch singers on tv or concerts to learn how to sing, and then read articles to pick up what little definitions I knew... but then I came on this website and phrases and words like "tonality" and "timbre" were being thrown everywhere! Now I'm more that I'm more informed I know whats good and what I should be working on!

No problem :) Hope you took the time to read Jazzy's stuff too (due to my error in terminology).

You're lucky to have a good vocal timbre, that's my biggest thing to work on. :p
