Hey I've been seeing the Christmas songs coming across SS and got to thinking this morning. In the U.S. a lot of us assume that everyone celebrates Xmas (one way or another) but not every country does.

I'd like to know about other countries traditions. For instance, Canada has "Boxing Day" on Dec. 26th right? What types of things are part of that. Decorations, celebrations, etc. ???

'Boxing Day

The day after Christmas, the Feast of St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, is better known as Boxing Day. The term may come from the opening of church poor boxes that day; maybe from the earthenware boxes with which boy apprentices collected money at the doors of their masters' clients.

Nowadays, we often see, in certain families, gifts (boxes) given to those who provide services throughout the year.'

IT is also known as " St. Stephen's Day", and is celebrated in other places as well, not just Canada.

lol, although, most canadians haven't a CLUE as to why they have that day off:) (most think it is the day they put their EMPTY boxes, from xmas out to the road... "boxing" day:)

And, intersting topic:) also, most know that my family and I don't celebrate ANY holidays... (actually, my husband used to go to work anyways, but now he is at college, so, no go:)

Catchin' a chicken on horseback! Now that is a sight!

I'll have to share that with one of my cowpoke friends - he'll probably want to start that around here too!

I've had the opportunity twice to go to New Orleans and turned it down both times - now I'll have to make a point of getting there sometime.

Oh my gawd, yes... Mic mac mall, in dartmouth.. boxing day sales... holy, try finding a parking space...

we do the.... follow the elderly, OUT OF THE mall, and to their car. IF they seem to be walking TOO far away, go find someone else, and then, wait, while they pack up their cars, GET in the cars, and back out.... then swear, and yell out yer window and the rude hick that pulls in, just as you were about to.

And yes, LINE ups! They close the doors to the stores, and only let so many people in at one time!! Ahh!! never agin, I swear:) (justy REALLY hates me that day:)

Mic Mac Mall? Mic Mac Mall? What is that? Wait now that's a big building I drive by and that if I get there 3 times a year they're lucky. Hate malls, hate shopping, thank God for gift certificates.

Sounds like the UK is pretty much like Canada with the holidays,...

Christmas day, Boxing day (which happens to fall on a saturday and sunday this year so we get extra holidays on monday and tuesday) followed by the usual SALES (oh, I LOVE the sales... so many bargains!)

Sounds like boxing day is actually a holiday based on the Catholic faith and it's association with saints rather than a specific country. Sort of like Mardi Gras (or Karnival/Carnival).

I know there are a large number of holidays celebrated this time of year - most of which are religious in nature.

Christmas - Christian celebration celebrating the birth of Christ
Chanukah/Hanukkah - Festival of dedication
Kwanza - African-American festival to celebrate heritage and positive community values
Yule - Wiccan festival celebrate in conjunction with the winter solstice (also celebrated by some Celtic and pagan religions as well)

There are likely others celebrated this time of year as well that I can't think of off the top of my head. But no matter which holiday you celebrate (if any at all) - may you have a happy one!
