I have purchased songs from Karaoke Version, Paris Music etc. Some are MP3+G and some are MP3 or MP4 backing tracks.

Would like to take them with me should I decide to go to Karaoke with a host that can play from disc.

Will just copying them to a CD work with commercial karaoke software, or will they need special formatting?

Thanks in advance for any insight from you pro KJ's!

The mp3g's can be burnt using karaoke burning software - you can't just use any burning software.

http://www.mtu.com/basics/karaoke.htm (does more than just burn discs)
http://www.powerkaraoke.com/src/prod_powercdgburner.php

I would download the demos and do test burns to see if your drive is compatible.
For the video files, not exactly sure what you'd need, however MOST karaoke players won't play the video files anyway. Good luck finding any kj's that will still play discs at all for that matter.

I was still playing customer cd's up until Feb 1, 2016 and I decided to stop as well. There are only a couple of hosts in my area that will play your cd, and they really suck as far as hosts are concerned.

I will play a customers disc using my laptop drive and MTU Hoster.
But I did remove my CDG player from my rack a few years ago.

I still play discs as well. I just meant it's getting fewer and far between.

Yes and so are the customers that bring their disc in.

Ha! I would guess media shifting from MP3+G download to disc is technically against terms of use as well, right?

My problem with bringing a Flashdrive/thumbdrive to a KJ is, it's a crap-shoot as to whether they can play it or not (and I'm not referring to those who just say no). Either they don't know what they're doing (in order to get my songs to open and play), or they aren't using whatever software is needed to open my files.

I don't play any discs, anymore. I am willing to play from customer thumb drives, as LONG as the songs aren't from SC or CB.

What kind of program are you guys using to play usb flash drives? Someone posted here before that windows media player will do it; somehow I can't get that to work.

MTU Hoster, plug it in and point to the drive, select and add to playlist.

Seems to me the risks with 'thumb' or 'flash' drives is high!

Who knows what you might catch from them!

So I'm thinking the disc option is much safer.

Never had an issue. You make sure to turn off all autoplay to begin with.

Depends on the manufacturer!

Brian I use the feature in Karma called "manually add media file" in the playlist section. Then I trim the ends, and drag to the singer's name in the rotation section.

You are correct. I flash drive is still a drive and contain viruses or corrupt your system. You're always taking a risk when taking a customers drive.
