I finally fixed the mix on a song and I cannot delete the other versions with a hiss in them. Turns out the tape (recovered from a trunk in the attic from my deceased mom and over 20 years old) had decayed over the years and we had done our best to salvage it. We do plan to release it soon, but in the mean time, I finally got 99% per cent of the I Believe in Love hiss out of the tape with a lot of real work. I can repost it now, it was one my mother's favorites of my music, but for some reason I am not able to delete the other submissions.

Phil, I called you a bit ago and hope you will delete both versions of I Believe in Love by Jean Valjean so I can upload the hopefully finally fixed versions.

Jean,

I was watching TV last night, a program all about Bohemian Rhapsody and Queen, and they said the original tape of BR was so fragile now that they had to bake it in an oven before they could play it...

Now, I don't know if it would work on your old tapes, but it seemed to work for them, might be worth some researching??

Just an idea ;)

Sounds a little radical. We did originally use the huge one inch or so tapes in the recording studios which would be mixed down to tape before CDs existed. I finally did get the hiss off the recording and now am still hoping for the delete button on the defective uploads to be activated so I can replace it with a decent upload.

Everytime I listen to "Who wants to live forever" by the lead singer of Queen, it really tears me up considering that he died and the words have such an intense and enduring message. Thanks for the advice. Perhaps I will try it on some old music tapes which aren't worth much and see if it improves the sound quality. However, in the early days of chat 10 years ago we used to get suggestions to press con alt del a lot as well or type in format c: - so if this was a good intention post - I think I have fixed the problem electronically - otherwise - well - maybe a microwave would work better. jvj.

Nope, this is a serious suggestion...

This was on the UK tv last night, they were at the main studios in Los Angeles...

But as I said, I have no idea if it would work... which is why I suggested researching it, not going straight ahead and trying it... I'd hate you to end up with nothing but cooked tapes!

EDIT: I just ran a quick Google search and found this site which talk about the "baking" and how/why it works...

Phill, please don't take out the link until Jean's had chance to see it!!!

Thanks ;)

Grin. Well then thanks for the suggestion. Probably I will still check out the info you mentioned and perhaps there is more there on such things. When going through my parents estate, I found almost a thousand tapes which had been meticulousy saved in a closet and lyrics to everything I had ever written since I was 5 when I begin to play the guitar. Of course, this is not to say my music merits such archive integrity, but those old cassette tapes, even kept sealed in a closet, especially other regular album tapes didn't fare so well over the decades. I actually found Glenn Miller type 78s and the original Beatles first album, Rolling Stones, etc. I have been advised many times to go and have an e-bay party and put up some of the items (not my stuff of course, even I have some semblance of humility) and they would be worth a bit. My original Rickenbacker and my Fender Twin with tubes I still guard with my life. Yet atop it sits a new POD and next to it Syber's Marshall. The POD pretty new, the Marshall more like the Twin.

There are some really cool people here and some hard core musicians and singers. Music is a big part of my life, and as a child, was my life. We have met "online" dozens of new friends here who we chat with and talk to.
