I use file name, but I could use a tag as well because I have KJFM write a tag whenever I make corrections to any file. I also have my files "unzipped" for that reason, because zips do not have tags until unzipped.

i use filename because i don't have the patience to fill in all the tag info for every song, but it would be cool to be able to search stuff by genre, era etc

I use file name. I'd rather use ID3 tag but it takes forever to scan in Karma. Makes no sense to use ID3 scan with Karma because it only shows artist title disc id to begin with (which you can get from the file name in a tenth of the time) and not the wealth of info that ID3 can show. I'm sure Mr. Bob put ID3 scan in there for stupid people. Because if you use ID3, you're stupid.

If you use KJFM (KJ File Manager) it will write the full disc ID and track number in the tag ID (even if zipped). I don't zip my files do you Don?

Nosir. Never have.

If artist title and disc id is used in the file names, it makes no sense to scan files with ID3 in Karma because it only shows artist title disc id to begin with. If there were more fields available like year, genre, LENGTH, it could make sense to use ID3.

Filename for me, however I ensure the MP3 tags match.
