Ok,... if a "Bad" singer, listens to their own recordings, do they enjoy them? I mean, hell, i can't even listen to my own stuff, 'cept for afew things, mainly duets. I am not a fan of my own voice, although, I generally like it WHEN i sing, just not recordings of it. Not my style. ( that sounds funny:)

So, if OTHER people snicker behind their backs, etc.. what the heck is the "bad singer" thinking when they listen to themselves... , can a self confessed BAD singer tell me this?! I mean, I have recorded my husband before (and some of you have heard him) and he can hear himself, and WINCE... but, he hasn't a clue WHILE he is singing it.

I am just nosy. Any answers? Justy and I are VERY curious.... because, I can understand how someone singing live might not notice how bad they are... but what happenes when they hear a RECORDING?! (like, when I hear myself on teh ansering machine and scream "is that me!?)

Well.... I think many people are shocked when they hear themselves for the first time. The voice you hear in your head is so different from the one on a recording. I remember my first answer machine... and hearing my voice on it... and thinking ewwwww...that's not how I sound.. is it? When I record songs... I listen to them intently over and over... I'm sooo critical and I listen with a critical ear.. usually focusing on timing and pitch. But when it's done and "in the can" ... I don't care to hear it over and over again... I'm done with it! When I went to my parents house for Thanksgiving... my Mom put a CD of mine on for the whole family to listen to.... and I just cringed!!!! I hate listening to myself... there .... I said it!!! I hate ME!!!

I know a girl that could definately challenge anyone for the "worst singer in the world" category, but I don't understand as to how she does not know herself that she is singing bad.

Everytime she sings I just want to cry. However, she thinks she is just amazing....even talking about Canadain Idol and how she was going to do so well....I was sure they were going to show her on the blooper reel, but they did not. -------The worst part about her too...while I sing...she is usually sitting behind me singing....and I just want to slap her because she is singing off key...screwing me up....grrrr......!

I think that people hear different things in their heads, and if they hear a bad recording, they will blame it on other things, like a bad tape. They probably just pump themselves up as well.

When I sing, I can hear myself go sharp and flat as I am singing, and I constantly listen to my recordings to see where I can improve.

But, the actual reason....who knows

There's an older man who frequents this place I go to for karaoke. Oh, dear GAWD, he drives me insane (as he does most people, I am sure.) His two favorite songs to sing are Conway Twitty's 'Hello Darling' and the Righteous Brothers 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling'. His name, if you believe it or not, is Billy Bob.

Now, what most people that hear him for the first time don't know is that Billy Bob has a speach impediment. He cannot pronounce certain words correctly. So when the lyrics "baby" roll across the screen, Billy Bob says "Bway-Bway". He is known for this. When he shows up, everyone looks at each other and we all say "Oh, look... it's "BWAY-BWAY"!!!! I know it's mean, but you gotta wonder: Can he NOT hear himself??

He stands there so confidently and obviously doesn't care what anyone else thinks. I really don't think he is capable of hearing himself, or what he hears is NOT what everyone else hears. His timing is awful as well. It's nice to follow after him though, because no matter how bad you sing, it can never be as bad as what you heard previously.

In the meantime...I KNOW when I'm singing something badly or off key or when it's just not working for me. My husband doesn't sing and knows it's something he'll never be able to do. I don't understand how some people can't "hear" themselves. It's true however that when I hear a recording of my speaking voice, to me it doesn't sound like me. Singing is different for some reason.

And yes, the dreaded answering machine. I have... such an odd speaking voice, that... yes, it sounds COMPLETELY different in my head... just like when singing.. i sound SOO much better in my HEAD, and then, I hear a recording, and, i just want to give up. I don't think I have an consistant pitch problems, that listening to my own recordings would help. I am generally on key, and any pitch fluctuations I may have would change, and aren't consistant. i hated singing, or speaking when I was young, because I had a lot of hearing problems, and spoke funny, and didn't hear myself the way OTHERS heard me... and hated being laughed at. So, i didnt' speak until I was over 4... I still feel that way now sometimes.

Ritisroo, about the Idol thing.. I remember watching the first canadian season, and there being people that didn't make it... and they acted like they were awesome, and the judges were out of their mind... when it was clear, to ALL (which was why they were SHOWN) that they were simply horrid... That is what I dont get. i mean, when you are THAT bad, it can't be a simple matter of sounding different to other people...You must be lacking SOME part of the brain that screams "THAT IS BAD< SHUT YOUR MOUTH!" But, I mean, sometimes a persons pitch is spot on, they just have a HORRIBLE voice.... How do THESE people hear other GOOD singers?



I can hear myself go off key while singing, but, like I said, listening to my recordings don't help, because it isn't as though i do it on the same word, etc, everytime.

Anyways, this has been an ongoing curiousity with me, from a young age.

I have an older sister, with a DREADFULLY bad singing voice, and in our family, she was considered the one who "sang"... she was always in choirs, etc... but, my golly, she was BAD... and i never understood how she didn't KNOW that.

I really didn't think that william hung lad was all that bad. I mean, he at least HELD the tune, his voice wasn't HORRIBLE, and he wasn't completely off key. He just LOOKED foolish. I mean, have you HEARD my husband? he makes William LOOK like the next idol.




I know... but, then not, Maybe it is just me, but generally, i prefer the voice i hear WHILE singing, then the voice that is played back to me. I don't 'listen to my songs for errors, I just adjust the volumes of the tracks, and then, submit them. I reaaally sound a LOT different to myself, and I still don't know if I really LIKE it. Lol, until someone here tells me, how bad I am, I will keep doing what I am doing.

by the way, to explain my rambling....

I can't listen to anyone today:) My cat chewed through my headphones, and my laptop speakers aren't meant to play music. So, blah, you all get to deal with me asking questions about things that bother me:)

Like, Why is my hair not curly since I had my daughter?! is driving me nuts. When it WAS curly, I wanted straight, and now, it is straight, and i want it CURLY.

Ok, ignore all that.

That's what the FX buttons are for.....aren't they?....just kidding.....lord....i hear myself while practicing......i have a good ear for it though.......THE DOGS!!......i'm serious. he sits by me on the floor...if i am not doing good he whines and wants out!!.....if i am ok..he just lies there. So, now.....i have my own Doggone Critic....


I have a friend who sings way OFF......i mean mean NOTES not made or heard of in this Universe.......OMG....he always tells me, i have perfect pitch!! But finally one day.....he ASKED me.....and i took him aside and said....Sweetie....you might have had when you were younger.....but somewhere you lost it. He walked away. I felt sooo bad. Then an hour later, he came up.....kissed me and said "guess i wont Yell so loud when i sing from now on"!!.......what a guy.....and he sings quieter which is SO nice......

Funny you should say that because I learned something yesterday at singing lessons !

Broken Wing by Martina is my example. When the pre-chorus comes on "And with A Broken Wing, she still Sings" ----well, my placement on the word AND throws off the whole chorus for me. She told me to start singing that song and ignore the "and" word. She said that I place it too far back in my throat (rather than up in front of my mouth) and that is what is causing me to sing the chorus struggling.

I know this may not mean much to you...but to me, it solves a million problems. I guess that was always my problem...placing notes the wrong way and not breathing from my stomach !

My friend who does karaoke was one of the bad ones they showed from Edmonton. She is a fairly good singer, but has no control...and I know that her mom probably feeds her lines like you would not believe !

I would hate to be on the blooper reel! I would cry !

Gilly, I have heard your hubby and he sounds pretty darn good compared to William Hung. (I hope William's not reading this)! Ahhh, he probably doesn't care anyway, he's laughing all the way to the bank....

Well, you HEARD my worst critique:) i swear, sky ALWAYS tells me if I was bad. ALWAYS. I am pathetic, because I sit here, and hope that she takes after ME< and not justy's family....

Not that I am amazing, but, him? oh gawd. I don' want to push her into music... or force her to try anything... but, I am sitting here quietly hoping she is interested in picking up one of my instruments and learning it... the minute she does though... mommy will be up and jumping and buying miniature instruments:) (I took piano lessons, at her age...and loved it, but, she has no interest. argh.

it DOES mean a lot to me. Ya know, I would LOVE to see you succeed, and achieve ANY goal you have set for youself (Just like I am crossing my fingers for whatever Luly has planned:) So, hearing that You learned soemthing new that helps? THRILLS me:)

But, I do understand what you mean. I have never had singing lessons, but, gawd, have a lot of musical experience, that I believe has helped a lot with me attemping to sing. Besides, you can't PLAY the horn, if you haven't the SLIGHTEST ear for music.

The thing is with you, regardless of missed pitches, you have a VERY pleasant singing voice. I like to listen to you, regardless of beign perfect, just like many others. So, to me, errors dont matter, although, obviously, tehy would to ya:)

Gilly.....i know what you mean!! My kids .......somewhere have musical ability out the wazoo! at 13 Josh picked up a electric guitar....NO lessons.....and OMG...he is fantastic. So we saved an bought him one......now he has two.....TWo large amps.....then Montana got into keyboard......we got her a HUGE yamaha......she learned that....by ear. Then she wanted drums......so for her bday last year.....we, and the grandparents bought her a set....Man oh man.....she's awesome...again by ear. Now Gabrielle....she loves the acoustic.....we bought her one....again by ear. I was going to pay for lessons.....but they didn't want any. Now, they are asked to jam with adult bands....and by the guy who i was going to get lessons from!! .....my garage during the spring and summer is MUSIC.....all the time. So, i know what you mean.....as soon as they wanted too.....we encouraged them. And i LOVE it.

My singing teacher tells me that all the time. She said that becuase I never had any training, I have always found ways to get around things...sing them without being technically correct. She is now just teaching me how to make my singing life easier !

She also says exactly what you said...even though I may be a bit off pitch..it is not the worst sound in the world...and sometimes hardly noticable

And as for ear training....I count my lucky stars every day of my life that it has come naturally for me...hearing pitch

But I practice hard! I sing all the time....when I had my car, in the tenants lounge, and I sing till I get it right! !

You already know how much I hate my voice. I have to leave the room when my in-laws are playing my cd.

@ your dog Melly...my dog doesn't mind my singing, but when I practice scales, he starts howling big time! So I put him out of the room.
Last night though, he starts howling, my other dog joins in (which he's never done before) and we're all laughing at the dogs. My parrot then does this little howl and blows a raspberry. I'm not singing anymore.....

Rits, I wish I could find a good vocal instructor...if I were going to sing again.

I got so lucky with mine. My cousens taught music with her and recommended her to me. She charges $70.00/month for 4 half hour lessons (works out to $17.50/half hour).

It is definately worth the money She knows what she is doing and is even willing to help me out at my competitions on her own time (come out and watch and critique me). ----and the nice thing is that my BF is willing to spend ANY amount of money to help me realize my dreams, which is just amazing of him Sitting through Karaoke for six hours....I just love him for it

She is the best critiquer I have evern seen cause she can tell you bad stuff while being nice....if that makes sense?

But, I would definately say that there are more people here that I would buy a CD from than anyone of the famous people out there Becase I know that people here actually have talent and are not "produced"

Girl, that is cheap!! I once checked into lessons...they were all charging like $100 an hour! That's why I've never taken one!!

Melly.. I come froma family, where I am the only one that plays any instruments... or draws.. or... does anythign that I enjoy doing. i wont sit and list the things I play, but, I will say, that I really miss being able to play them when I want. When i moved, I only brought one guitar with me, and left EVERYTHING else in nova scotia. kind of feels like a part of me died.


Roo- I am like that with a lot of people. I don't want to list people HERE, because that would be rude. But, I like VOICES. I don't care where they screw up, I like a CertAIN voice. and that is it. I like to be able to hear personality, through the voice.... has nothign to do with perfection. I was something that grabs me, and makes me feel like i know the person singing.

Which brings me to Miss Milo...


I was unable to do your music last night. i need to go out and buy a new set of headphones. AGAIN. And then, i will finish.

but, my point holds true. i don't care WHERE you go off. I simply LOVE the tone of your voice, so rich, and mellow. Grabs me. i like it.


roo- i would be interested in vocal lessons... but, hey, i have no desire to... achieve anything with voice. i would die to go back to playing brass again.. but, in voice? i KNOW it is my weakest point. And... well. i havent' the money for lessons... plus, you know me, i can't sing in front of people:)

That is not even the worst of it.....some of these people don't have a clue what they are doing and can mess you up more than do you good! I agree, it is hard to find a good one....I have seen ones for $45.00/have hour as well.
