Miss Milo,
You're such a doll.... and yes, Gilly's post was a great one, wasn't it? This is the first year my family hasn't gone alll out, and everyone seems to be enjoying it... so hopefully this idea will stick around in my family... I'm so relaxed this year, cuz not only do I not have to worry about money and greedy people (as mentioned in ma post up there somewhere) BUT now I don't have to have my RUDE brothers asking "Why isnt' Tyson here? Is he too good to celebrate Christmas with his wife?"
Good Lord! If I'm not offended by him stayin home, why the hell are YOU? and what gives YOU the right to offend ME because of it!! GRR!
*whew!* that feels good to get that out... now if only i could say it like THAT to my brothers!!!
anyways... to get back to the ORIGINAL point to this thread... I say we all pick a charity... and donate a little at a time throughout the year. Not just a single dollar with the remaining pocket lint stuck to it when u walk past the Santa ringin' his bell at the mall. I've got mine!! Sunshine Dreams For Kids (been supporting them for years) And ya know that Food Bank box that you see in the grocery stores.... that's ALWAYS there... just not always sparkly and covered in gift wrap like it is at christmas... just nobody notices it untill then...

This thread reminds me of a song lyric in Marilyn Manson's 'The Beautiful People': "Capitalism has made it this way..." (Not that I like MM much or anything, but I DO like that song.)
My father thinks all Holidays (T-day, Easter, Xmas, etc.) causes people to focus too much on shopping, and forget about the "true" reason for the holiday in the first place. Estimated retail sales for the day after Thanksgiving were 28 Billion, if that tells us anything.
I have an aunt and uncle who, years ago, reverted to the Jehovah's Witness faith for the sole purpose of not having to celebrate anything. This included their children's birthdays. Since they've always been a fairly poor family, we thought this was quite convenient considering the circumstances. However, this did NOT stop them from accepting gifts if family members gave them any. I, being 8 or 9 at the time and quite vocal for my age, thought that was a crock... so I pointed it out to my aunt one time. I said, "Uh, I thought you didn't celebrate any holidays? How come you took the present my mom got you?" She just blinked at me and said nothing. They quit being Jehovah's Witnesses about a year later... (Note: No offense intended toward any members of the Jehovah's Witness. Just making a point.)

but not gittin into THAT conversation, are we?? !
anyways... the POINT:
no offense taken! !

I got mine... I've been sponsoring a child in Equador for the last four years... I send them money through a company that helps them to build and grow... his family are farmers... since I started sponsoring them, they now have they're first ever toilet... basic equipment for farming... and the company put money together from ALL the sponsors in that area and built a schoolhouse...
What do I get in return? Nothing... except a yearly photograph, occasional drawings (which go alongside my own son's nursery scribbles) and an occasional letter from his parents.
The reason I do this is because I can SEE my money doing good... rather than putting it in a tin and not knowing if its doing the good that I intended... you may or may not agree with these programmes... but I've seen the good they can do, and its my own way of giving a little back, all year round

For years I contributed to several of the local chapters of well known organizations. But after reading stories of financial mismanagement, I went shopping for another charity. I found The Valley Rescue Mission. While only a local organizition, they are much more than a charity. They offer life skills training and shelter to the homeless, battered women and those who have temporarily fallen into misfortune.
Valley Rescue is not in a brand new, opulent building in a prime location with manicured grounds, but rather in an area of town where their services are easily accessible, the buildings solid, but older and the residents do what yard work is needed.
The community has opened its arms and welcomed this organization because they are caring and never turn another away. If they don't have room, they will search until they find room. In the summer, they have a camp for kids. Most of these less fortunate kids have never been away from home, much less seen a horse or swam in a lake.
They have a clothing bank and household furniture, goods and staples to help families. They offer food daily and spiritual guidance if asked for. It is run mostly by volunteers.
Anytime I clean out a closet or buy new furniture, they are who I call. Nothing is too small or too large or too "useless" to them.
As you can see, I am a big promoter for this local charity. I have seen nothing but good works from them. They get my support year round.
Prehaps there is a local organization in your community that could use your support.

I never trusted those programs very much. You never know where it's going. Can you send me some info on that.
But more than anything, has anybody done anything for the needy in their own home town?

Confused would be a nice way of saying it.
Lawsy, I do love to pick on you!
Yep, it's there. See Matt asked if anyone had done anything for the needy in their own home town? Gail had just posted right before him about one in her own community. It's a guy thing I guess...you know how they pay attention when we speak.

Better late than...
My charity of choice is "The Jeffrey Foundation" dot com.
They are here in Los Angeles, and provide services for "at risk" children and families.
As we type, they are having a cash flow problem, even with "the season" upon us.
Many good things flow from this fine childrens charity.
If you can find it in your heart, drop them a line. (or a $)
My two cents is there allready.

I give to the Red Cross. It helps americans that need it, and our soldiers in Iraq.
as far as helping the local needy........
I live in New Orleans, and you can't Walk a block without some supposedly homelessly person has had a car broken down, or needs gas to get home for christmas, funny thing you will see the same ones there in the summer trying to get to texas because his mother is on her Death bed. After a while Getting scammed gets old. It ruins it for Legitimacy.
If I get Flamed for this...... So BE it!!!!!

hey I ain't gonna flame ya...
I once was waiting for a bus downtown in the dead of winter last year... MY GOD! It was SOOO cold that day.... -28 degrees C.... and that's not counting the windchill!!
so I was waiting for my bus in front of Tim Hortons.... debating on whether or not I should go grab some tea to warm up (It was at a time when I had 5 bucks and some change left to last me the rest of the week.. I'm sure some of you know the feeling! !) And this old man comes up to me... all cold.... and dirty. I felt SO bad for him.... and he asked me if I would give him some money to get something to eat. He points to Tim's and goes "they won't let me warm up in there unless I buy something" and he goes " I WOULD buy something... I'm HUNGRY, but I can't afford that stuff" SO... here's me feeling horrible about this poor freezing man who walks with a limp and the whole bit, so I gave him my last 5 bucks.... his face lit up and he was so appreciative...
My bus came and just as it was leaving... the "poor, starving" man made a fricken paper airplane outta my 5 bucks and threw it off a parkade!!!!! I COULDA SCREAMED AT HIM!! I needed that money worse than HE did apparantly!! GRR! So then I got to work and couldn't afford to buy ma own lunch cuz I fell for the origami man!! GRR!

yeah, there's those that stand by the street intersection, usually very busy ones, with a cardboard sign saying any number of things. There was a time when I gave. Now, I'm so jaded against that it's not funny.
unbelieveable about the paper airplane! OMG!

In cases of the "I'm hungry" routine if you feel charitable, take them in and order it for them. Chances are they will decline. As for "The intersection" people, we have them here. One business owner went and gave them applications to work for him and not one responded and some got ticked off telling him they can make $100 + a day doing what they are doing. And notice that most of them usually have a big dog (shepherd, pit bull, etc) with them. They also seem to be wearing Columbia jackets Addidas or equivalent, etc.
If you want to help these people donate to your local homeless shelters, soup kitchens, or food bank. There are many organizations out there to help them.
The worse commercial I have ever seen was a "No kid ever asked to be on the street", making it sound like they came from very bad families/circumstances. If you investigate, the vast majority choose the street either for kicks or they don't like the rules at home, like go to school or go to work.
The ones I have sympathy for are the mentally challenged, who shouldn't be on the streets but are because some left wing group lobbied for their "rights" not to be in an institution, so now they are kicked out. Some piece of work. Way to go "good doers".

Timberlea, You got it, even there, I can think of certain intersection in HFX, that drove me nuts to get stopped at a light, or certain places in dartmouth, that I hated to go for a walk, for the same reason.
And you got it, Big dogs, and columbia jackets, or the like.
People used to like to approach me, when I was with my daughter, walking her in a stroller... yes, the best time to ask me for money.
But, I agree. I mainly give to homeless shelters, food banks, and always donate my belongings when i move , to the sally ann, etc. I prefer to volunteer time, over money, however.
"No kid ever asked to be on the street"
I had friends that CHOSE to live on the streets. yes, chose. They liked the atmosphere, and friends, lifestyle, and ... drugs. I don't know if things are different In NS, then everywhere else... but... There are USUALLY other places you can go.
The other day, we were walking along the lake, and, skylah (my daughter) was walking along the edge of the flowerbeds, that line the path, when she tripped over a boot. The boot was attached to a man, and the man was lying, passed out, drunk, with a bottle in his hand, IN the flower bed.
To explain that to a 3 year old.....

I once stopped at a kwiki mart and had a homeless man as for money. I thought for one minute and said I would give him some money if he would answer me one question. Why do you stand here beggin for money? His reply was I make more money then you and I don't do a single thing. So I gave him a few bucks and that was the last time gave any handout to anyone standing begging for money no matter what. That was a good 15 year ago. If I give I will give to food bank.
Down and out..... Please give CD+G's
Bless you.....
