Wow Gilly, I don't like Shania's voice that much either. It's like I keep waiting and waiting for something that she doesn't do or something....incomplete somehow. I do love her songs cuz they're fun as hell though.
People like Jewel and Christina A.: I wonder if they ever had lessons or were just borned good. Told ya Syber, I have sooooo many questions. And thx Syber for answering that question.
Gilly, ya know I've told ya I love your humor....a lot of people on the radio make me gag too! Love the way you put that. Britney Spears....God I have no words for how bad that singing is.

, yes, shania.. but, heck, the chick is pretty hot:)
Not a big fan of C.A.'s music, but I can admit that she has an incredible voice. Sadly, I don't enjoy the way she USES the voice, as I don't enjoy her music, so that detracts from the enjoyment for me:)
Actually, (yes, there will be rambling involved) Both of Jewel's parents were musicians, and apparently Jewel travelled with them, from around five... and toured with her dad for like, 7 year. She had a yodeling routine, or something. She went to Michigan's Interlochen Fine Arts Academy in high school, and the tuition was paid with a vocal scholarship., then, she did the whole live in the VW van thing, wrote some music, performed at some coffee houses, and then got a record deal at 19.
Yes, I know too much, but I enjoy her music a lot, and is one of the reasons I even started singing...(in the shower...) and picked my guitar back up.
So, yeah, must be good genes, a musical upbringing, and some teaching. etc etc.
No one in my entire family, including all cousins, and aunts and uncles, sings, or plays any instruments.... not a one, and as a maritimer, I have a HUUUGE family.
So, I think I am doomed:)
And, I don't have a sense of humor. I never joke. I am completely serious, at all times... that makes me just plain scary eh?
Bob the builder is REALLY scaring me right now.... I think... elton john is.. performing? On a leopard print guitar, (crocodile rock) and all of the characters, are behaving oddly.. someone save me....when is BED TIME?!

Oh, and for male singers, My husband I both think Roy Forbes is terrific. (But then, My mother can't stand his voice.)
I can't think of anyone else, because I am horrible picky, and dislike a lot of things about people's voices.
(Do people on here count? Because, Miss Milo, I think you are perfect, esp. after hearing that first take, and, connie amazes me, and then, SO many others...To me you are all famous singers too:)

You make me want to just sing my heart out (but my voice is so shot...does your voice get weaker as the day goes on? There is a big difference when I sing at night than earlier in the day. Is that normal?
Does that mean I'm not singing right or something? I'll have to ask that on the critique thread for regular people....except I'm not regular anymore - I'm famous now!!! )
Because Gilly said so that's why!
Oh, yeah...famous people. You know whose voice I absolutely cannot stand? Barbra Streisand. I just do not like it and isn't she considered to be like a real diva or something? What do I know? I love Willie Nelson...now does he sing through his nose or not?

well, I agree with the babara part... guess who Justy and I both can't stand? Celine Dion. ack, not a chance. I have a huge list too, would drive everyone nuts, because I swear, everyone LOVES the people i hate to hear!:) We call them station changers....(for when the radio is on, "gilly, Change that STATION!!!")
And, yes, you are famous to ME:) Oh, My voice is pretty much the same all day... and I always record at night, like, around 10 pm, or later. I have actually heard a LOT of people complain that they can't sing in the morning... so, obviously, it is dif. for everyone? Blah.

His voice may or may not be perfect...but my favorite singer of all time(By Far) is Paul Rogers of Bad Company , another is the late Jimmy Dewar (early Robin Trower Band) on the female side..I love Pat benatar , and the Heart Girlz Ann And Nancy Wilson . I guess I'm showin' my age again..oh well it's all really just a matter of personal opinion I suppose.

Depends... sometimes my voice sucks in the morning... doesn't sound ok until I get it warmed up. Other times, it's worse in the evening (one has to be careful, for example if you have a gig at night, not to stuff your face or yell a lot during the day, and not that I do... but also not to drink alcohol, or spend a lot of time breathing cold air, cause all of that can blow your voice out for the evening). Well, I can appreciate her ability, but I don't much like her voice either.
And Willie? Well, I'm not into country music, but his nasality is something he has developed into his own twangy style. Besides, you can really hear him open up and sing too sometimes.

male vocalists...steve winwood, perry in journey days are a big wow for me...i admire the vocals and harmonies of bands like the moody blues, barclay james harvest, ELO, Genesis etc
women...welll although i am not a massive fan you cannot take away the power and range of celine dion.
fav female vocalists of mine are pat benetar, cyndi lauper who is very under rated as a artist and some of the range is pretty incredible, kirsty macoll who's music i adored.
oh i have so many who i admire....people who i think have average voices but are very clever business people i would say madonna is the most famous...all respect to her with what she's achieved with an average voice.

Hey Missy... I agree about Cyndi Lauper!!!! I saw Cher last year (who I just love as a performer... the girl has such a history and persona and she puts on quite an extravagant show! Lot's of acrobats and dancers!) Cyndi opened for her.... she came down into the audience and sang right in front of my face... she then jumped back onstage and rolled upside down without missing a note and continued to sing in that position... that can't be easy!! One of my all time favorites is Martina McBride.... saw her in Vegas last summer.... when she belted out those long sustained high notes.... everybody jumped to their feet... she is AMAZING.... and TINY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are some vocalists that I admire for their talent... but just can't stand to listen to them... Celine Dion is one of em.... not sure why! But I don't care for her voice.... although... I know she is an outstanding singer!

Gilly wrote: Tigger- I have never seen Jewel live, but, I have a gazillion recordings of her live (doing a lot of neat songs, that are incredibly hard to find) and, by golly the chicky has an amazing voice, and yuppers the power is incredible, even though most people don't think of her having that sorta voice. Lol, now I sound even MORE obsessed with her...
ooh, and I have heard many live recordings of Sarah McLachlan, and have had a lot of friends see her live, and I think she is amazing....
I concur with Gilly about Jewel and Sarah (two of my personal favorites.) And I HAVE seen Jewel live back in March or something. She came to my home town, which was completely amazing since no one cool EVER comes here. She performed all by her lonesome, no backup singers or a band, and it was just astounding. She talked a lot about meanings behind some of her songs, and claimed that the first time she heard 'Who Will Save Your Soul' on the radio, she nearly choked because she thought she sounded like Kermit the Frog. She has a really good sense of humor too, which only boosted my admiration for her. And she did some yodeling... I couldn't pick my jaw up off the floor! Not that I'm into yodeling or anything, I just find it amazing that she can do it for so long and so FAST!
Let's see... other singers I am rather partial to: Eva Cassidy (I can never get tired of listening to her voice.) Tori Amos, Chris Martin (of Coldplay) and I'm sure there's more, just having temporary memory loss.

Cyndi!!! Another of my all-time favorites.
You're right, she's very much underrated and one H3LL of a vocalist. She really stretches my range sometimes..

(looks around furtively)
Well, didn't overlook him, deliberately bypassed him. I always end up arguing with folks about him, but he is NOT a great vocalist... he just really knows how to use what he does have and something about his vocals is 'charming'... or something.
He's one of those people who is like a bumblebee... theoretically, he shouldn't be able to fly, but he does.

I honestly think I'd just BAWL if I saw her live... (I cry at the drop of a HAT!... Just the sap in me, I guess) incase you haven't guessed, she's my all time favorite singer.. without a doubt!!!!! Just LOVE watching her on TV live n stuff, but I can't even imagine how great it would be to actually BE there.... *dreaming....*

Bob Dylan is obviously a horrid singer, especially in later years.
What the man COULD do, and do well, is WRITE good songs, and good harmonies. He used to do such wonderful folk songs, and most people just looked past his "ha-wanna WHOEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"

I can imagine MYSELF trying to do that... and it would NOT be pretty.
I'd end up stuck on the floor in some embarrassing position, with an ambulance on the way to untangle me.
