!
Okay, well Phill is hard at work creating the critique option... so my guess isany subber that wants to be "critiqued" should flat out say so... DESPITE the open rule that Syber posted!!
Sure is funny... that's a founding rule, and people don't seem to grasp that concept. Oh well... soon, phill will have it all nicey nice!

Crystal wrote: LOL! this has turned into a thread all about ME! ! I just saw your comment, syberchick, and THANK U SO MUCH! ok so this diaphram thing... when I was in school band, I played the flute and my teacher used to tell us to breathe from our diaphram... He says you know you're doing it right when you take a deep breath and your stomache rises.... not your chest... is that the same for singing? cuz I can definately give that a shot. oh and "stand" up straight?? well i NEVER stand! ! i'm always sittin' at ma 'puter when I sing.... K I'll try that too... THANKS!!! your cheque's in the mail!
BTW - I deeply appologize for being so 'behind' in these two threads. Been having to take care of stuff so I haven't been ignoring you!!
ANYhoo - about the 'diaphram', When you take a deep breath from your diaphram, yes your stomach will raise, but it also feels like you're, well... breathing from your uh... 'bottom'. You'll see what I mean when you do it.
Also, probably part of what is holding you back is that you ARE sitting down while you sing!! I do it too, but you can't physically get the full benefit of your 'instrument' (your body) while sitting down. You WILL notice, however, that when start standing up to sing (at first) you're going to sound awful!! Don't let this scare you. You have to relearn to control your muscles while using them to their full potential. I always have trouble singing on pitch while standing after I've been singing while sitting for a long time. Don't worry, you'll adjust quickly.
Go gettem girl!!!! (erg... almost got fluffy there for a sec)

Syberchick
I have sat here reading your thread about how you comment...If this is how you comment ...why didnt you read my discription to the song that you commented on ...I had so much fun recording this the night before and to have it so brutely critique well just floored me...
I replyed if you didnt like the song or my singing..please dont listen to my subs and so I dont offend your ears again...fair comment I thought...
why listen to it..I appologised for my bad song....but your edit (which you cant reply to) was just down right mean...and oh yeah it was a learning thing alright...and all your taught me is that I will never in my life make anyone feel like you did yesterday...and as for your friend and partner Jean's comments..as she put it the 2 Simons of SS...it just blew me away...had me in tears here all afternoon... got me thinking that maybe I am just a hopeless singer and that I only deserve the below 5s that you game me to get my ranking for the song down to a 6 from a 9
And so took all of 2 seconds to delete all my songs...actually longer I am on dial up...that to me was harsh and very cruel...I would never in my life time do that to another person..
Jazzy is right I am sensitive..but not that sensitive..if you did the same to anyone in this thread...I am sure they would feel like myself...I have deleted you and your friends comments..and edits so as far as I am concerned this matter if over...
Through some wonderful wonderful friend that I have made on this site..I am going to continue to post my songs..with no rackings...and I will continue to listen to other peoples songs and put my fluff on them..and make them smile...because...well just because..
please do not replay to this ...because there is nothing left for you to say ...its been said..
happy singing

But it takes all kinds to make the world go round...

I guess it DOES take all kinds to make the world go around and, just like you said- gives me insight about certain people on the site, too... See?? I learned something... I guess when Phill makes the new options for subbing, you will be able to use the NO CRITIQUE function he mentioned HERE webguru wrote: 1) Checkbox: Critique. This is a box that the submitter would check to request valuable suggestions for improvement.
and you could leave it Unchecked to let people know you simply want your 9 or 10 and fluff... see? our whining has even paid off for you... oh wait, I musta missed the small print AGAIN... it isn't whining if it benefits you, it is more of a suggestion like Phill has asked for, but it is whining when we do it... it is all becoming very clear to me...
maybe phill can also create an option to ONLY allow 9 or 10's so as not to mess up people's song ratings... and then after he does that he can create a Comment Converter that flags mean and possible negative words and convert them to fluff... for example:
Actual comment: OMG! that was the most painful thing I have EVER listened to! I can only give this a 3...
Comment Converter translation: OMG! that was the most wonderful thing i have EVER listened to! I can only give this a 10!!!!!
See??? very subtle changes transform the whole meaning to something totally different!!! and it shouldn't be hard to create because there are about 20-30 comments that are repeated on every sub no matter what so it would just be a matter of replacing bad critiques with a randomly chosen Comment Converter translation!!! EVERYONE WINS on this... the person commenting can be as honest and brutal as they want but by the time the message gets to the subber, the Converter has made everything OK...
now if i can just get phill to create a Winning Lottery Numbers Button for me...

mezza, you obviously want something this site wasn't designed to give. Or you wouldn't have read the things that caused you so much pain. I personally don't feel that Syber WAS trying to be bad. I wasn't partial to the edited comments, only what you posted up.
The site is for people TO comment on their subs. Her comments were valid and justified to SYBER. Not saying she was an expert... just that it was her opinion.
You're a victim of too much fluff... sad to say. You've begun to believe what your friends are telling you, and a little constructive criticism hurt badly. THIS is what I hate about it when people lie, to even friends. They don't want to hurt them, but by telling them a lie hurts even more... because you're not prepared for when people WILL be honest about something.
I'm sorry it hurt. Did you stop to think for a moment that Syber might have been correct? That there is room for improvement?
I know I do when Tig tells me I stink in a certain spot, or had trouble finding my key, or anything else. Because he IS honest, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
I'll give you an example:
My song of "Who Wants To Live Forever"... I worked VERY hard on this... four attempts at vocals a bit too high for me... and by the fourth time, I knew there would be no fifth. The final submission had it's troubles... but I WANTED honest feedback... to see if the listeners could find other problems...
I heard a few comments that said what I expected, and TONS of "WOW, OMG, etc etc"... and I started to BELIEVE it. UNTIL I asked Tig.
A dose of reality is shocking, but often necessary.
Anyway, my two cents.
Matt

You know... come to think of it... I can't see it as being fair to allow ranking if the person doesn't want 'critiques'.
How about "[] Critique/Rank or [] NO Critique Rank"
Otherwise, crappy songs end up being among the 'top ranked submissions'

From what I remember, after my original critique (which has been overwhelmingly judged to have been on the constructive, rather than 'nasty' side), I was hit with a 'nasty' reply... basically... "if you don't like it, don't listen". To which I replied something to the effect (if I recall), 'this is a public, song-rating forum - if you don't want your song critiqued, either don't post or say so in your sub description'.
Now then, I DO read sub descriptions (the changes Paul is making will fix all of this anyway so it's irrelevant, BUT...) and when I have seen someone say something to the effect "please don't criticize" I will either not comment (if it's very bad), or let them know it's really good (if it is).
I am not a mean person. As for 'Jean' - that would be my husband. He has opinions of his own and if you think I can be critical, you haven't heard him yet. He has been a professional musician for over 30 years and he has a very, very good ear. And it's true, he and I ARE more like 'Simons' than 'Paulas'.. but we're not the only ones here (thank GOD!!).
And hey, even Paula had her limits.

Wow, you did that song?? That's a really hard one my husband has been wanting to do for quite some time. Kudos for trying anyway.
Oh, and thanks for the support.

ok I serrender...I am the baddie publicly shooot me and be done with it...and if jean is your husband well ...I must just be plain bad bad..
After all its just Karaoke
I have no incling to become professional ...so why all this ..
I have been judged ... you win amen
Lets move on
Tigrr ...I understand what you are saying...I for one normally do have an open mind to critiques ..and I dont expect a 9 or a 10 for every sub...but what I was trying to get at is...the discription on the song...I put this is way out of my depth and not my normal stuff..was doing the song for a friend...and the person whom I was singing it for loved it...that to me is all that matters...if you see a message like that ...why would you go in and critique it...this is why I wrote in anger..which I know now was a silly thing to do...and will never happen again
I do believe in the critique button ...and I have used it..in another program..I use it when I am having trouble with a song and needed help...construtive and possitive comments are given and were given...and helped me a lot...I am not blind and I thank you for your whining...its a good idea....and to be used as needed...
I am sorry that I snapped in here..it wont happen again..I will take time to think things over first...

Well, I hardly ever post here, as you can prolly see, but this is something that is always on my mind. First and foremost, I won't get into attacking single people, especially my Melodie, who is one of the most wonderful people I've met online. This is strictly on topic stuff.
First of all, Syber, I went ahead and read all your comments on the site, and I think it's just peaches that you are able to be so honest. It's a quality that is lacking here sometimes, tho that's not really a bad thing.
We're here to enjoy each other, and for the most part, that's what happens. I had made a suggestion about adding a "Critique Me" or a "Stuff the Fluff" category a while back. I think that would help a lot. Some people want to learn, but we can't assume that everyone here wants to. I know for sure a handful of people who love their fluff, and that's cool with me. (I was brought up to appreciate everyone, regardless of skill or abilities, and to always applaud an effort) I know for one, I never got any better from it, but perhaps others feel different. In fact, I'm sure they do!
If I had one piece of advice for you though, it would be to utilize a more "build, break, build" strategy. In other words, offer support, and congrats, then offer your critique and advice, then go back to support and congrats. It's an effective strategy in marketing, and it works in other walks of life as well. Sometimes you do use BBB, but if you use it for one, you have to use it for everyone!
Anyhoo, can't spend all morning sitting here. Let me just say that I for one, love your honesty, love your hubbys work, and as for me, you may offer your advice anytime without fear of my wrath ;-p
And finally....this is just "karaoke." Not everyone here wants to go pro someday. Always have to take that into account, before ANYTHING else. If we picked out every little thing at a karaoke party, it wouldn't be much fun, would it?
Cheers everyone!
Jason

No problem. I think I even gave you some very NICE feedback on one of your subs after going back and listening to the rest of them. Besides, I 'never' said you were 'just plain bad', only that you could improve.
I didn't like your 'abracadabra' sub... so what? I did like other subs you posted. Anyway, gotta run for now.

Hi Jason (sorry for chopping up your quote, I didn't want to post the whole thing). Yes, I DO TRY to use the BBB thing as much as possible, but as MissyGG said, sometimes I just don't have room. If nothing else, I at least try to be 'constructive' rather than just saying 'eww that sucked'.
I'm coming to appreciate (even more) the fact that many people here are just posting 'for fun' and therefore, I really like the idea of a 'critique' button... but at the same time, I don't feel people should be allowed rating if they don't want to be critiqued. Otherwise, we end up with 'highest ranked subs' being full of 'fluffy', less-than-great '10s'.
No critique, no rank is my suggestion.
As for the Karaoke Party analogy, yes... I can see what you mean, but this site WAS created in the spirit of having vocalists RANK and CRITIQUE each other. I do think it's cool that Phill is fixing that problem by giving people an 'option'.
Oh, and I'm looking forward to downloading that song from you on DTS.
Thanks for posting!

I'm in favor of allowing people to be ranked but not commented on. A problem I sometimes have when I don't like a submission is that I don't really know how it could be improved, or what exactly I don't like about it. Sometimes I just don't like the singer's voice. I'd much rather just give a submission a low rating than have to say something potentially painful to the singer if I can't give them something constructive to work on.
It's karaoke, folks. If I don't like your submissions, or even if I think you sound horrible, that's no reason to stop singing. If you're having fun, keep doing it. Some of us are great singers and a few of us are awful. Most of us are in between. But we're all singers and I respect anybody with the guts to let people listen. Don't take any disparaging comments personally.
