Crystal..Matt .. hold the phone guys, we are on the same page..

My reference was to Dyingmoose who is suggesting one be formally qualified in order to give a valid critique especially as it relates to Classical music ... Do not construe my statement as derogatory ..

Thankyou,

Cort

I'm sorry... I must be confused.. didn't u say the following:

Quote:
Any singer hear asking for a Critique is asking something for nothing. If one is serious about improving their singing ability, seek out a vocal coach that you are comfortable with and DONOT LISTEN TO ANYONE ELSE!!!

You have one opinon when talking to Matt and I, but another opinion when talking to DyingMoose??

oh I wasn't jumpin' ya Cort, I was merely saying that this site is designed with the sole purpose of getting like minded people together to encourage singing at home, or recording, and then finding out what kinda hints we need to improve ourselves.

The main problem I see is when you have such a VAST audience of different styles and ideas, that a common site has trouble making room for all. I joined up here thinking this site was exactly what the intro says it is. People here have changed, adapted and basically Borgified themselves to fit another mold. And there's nothing saying that's a BAD thing. If people come here, sing, upload their stuff, and sit back and just enjoy each other's presence, great!! that' AWESOME.

But it's also changing slightly the concept if you have your stuff online, people can and probably WILL comment on it. Most of us want to do that for the benefit OF the singer.

My suggestion to the sensitive ones: If you don't want comments, HEY, how about an introduction of "Please don't critique... I'm here for the fun!"

Gday folks...If I could turn back time...anyone know that song...it would really go well on this thread...

Now heading back to my well lived in corner ...and zipping lips and fingers ...and never again adding my 5 cents worth...

syberchick was right I could do better...but how does she know this..never has she commented on my other songs...

I really am not that big of a softy ...I can take what most people dish out...but allstar when commenting tells you hes heard you do better...see the difference...Hes HEARD you ...

I am sorry I found your comment to be a wee bit harsh...but you should read the discription to song before jumpin on your high commenting horse...a fun song and way outta my depth...you might as well just stuck your foot on my head and held me down...and now use my quotes to make a point..hey I deserve it...

Syberchick I am sorry I posted your comments on this thread and I applogies for doing so...but I am a very hot headed aussie..cant help it...
I still to this day can not understand why you chose that particular song to critique...why not one of my others...like there were 20 to chose from..

Ok I am done moaning now..time to go sing as song to post...

from my little corner I bid you all a fair the well..
cheers Melodie xox

Yes Crystal, I thought my statement was straight forward..

Quote:

Was there another way you would to suggest that I state my opinion that would not offend you?

Quote:
u make it sound as tho I'm "using" people here for their knowledge

The word "using" is in the eye of the beholder..Since you seem to want me to address this statement.. I do not think anyone here has an enlightened self intrest in intentionally "using" other singers on this site.

Quote:
Unfortunately Cort, not everyone can afford the luxury of a singing coach... nor the privacy either

I couldn't agree with more Matt.. But I was not refering to the average singer here that is looking for some quick pointers, I am talking about those who feel they are good enough to "make it big".

you know, I just went and heard one of Mezza's subs... nothing wrong there. She's got a Dolly Parton kinda higher pitched voice, but she sings well in tune, and in pitch. Her timbre is a bit off, but as I told her in PM, I suspect she's not singing enough from her Diaphram.

You have nothing to worry about mezza. SUB away... you're not a bad singer at all.

If someone says something you don't agree with, do like a few others do. Thank them for their time and move on.

and to show you I'm not all talk, I'll post one up again, one I recently did. I am still waiting quite patiently for Phill to impliment his changes... but as it's been pointed out by a few others... right now it looks as if I'm all bluster... not the case. I'm just not entirely happy with the system as it sits now...

u make it sound as tho I'm "using" people here for their knowledge. From what I understand... these people are more than happy to tell me where I could use improvement... syberchick? Jazzy? am I wrong?

No! You're correct! :) I mean, no one is 'forcing' us to critique. We enjoy it (when we have the time). It makes us feel good to know we might be helping someone out, well at least that's my side... I can't speak for Jazzy, but I'm sure it's something similar.

I *think* the point MC is making, is that folks shouldn't be too judgemental of critiques they get for free - not that YOU have a problem with that!!! ;)

For example, I have many years of experience in music, I've also learned a lot from my husband who has a lifetime of professional music experience, but I have no degrees in musicology (although I have had some training).

However, I was lucky enough to be born with a good ear, the ability to 'play by ear' from a very early age, and years of intensive study. I can TELL if something is 'flat' or not by listening to it. I can tell if timing is off, etc etc. I am certainly not alone in this respect, many many people here can do the same I am sure... it's just that they choose not to.

It makes me feel GOOD when folks like you, Crystal, come along who say 'hey, these folks know what they're talking about. She said that phrase was flat and by-golly... when I went back and listened to it, it was flat!!' LOL :)

Oh, and I'm not being irritated toward you, Crystal... just thought I would use this opportunity to clarify my experience and training (or lack thereof depending on how you look at it).

To me, it's generally pretty obvious whether or not a person knows what they're talking about when they are critiquing a submission. People can generally agree (if they're being honest) whether or not something was flat or the timing was off. The only place agreement starts to break down, is whether or not the commenter LIKES the sub. Now that is a whole new ball of wax. I can listen to a technically perfect song, and not really like it... or listen to a less than 'perfect' song, and really like it because of other factors... but THAT is getting into 'personal preference', rather than technical abilities.

whew... ;)

DITTO THAT.... Tigger... Matt said it so much better than I could... Cuz all I can come up with is "F### 'em!" LOL! Absolutely do what makes ya happy! sing till you're little heart's content!

I also agree with the Matt on the "get a vocal coach" thing... I thought that's what this site was FOR... to get feedback from fellow singers.... and of course... for those who just wanna sing.

Ditto and Ditto :)

Ironically, I used to sing a lot MORE (and publically, such as in the supermarket along to the music playing) when I thought I couldn't sing, than I do now and after I started singing 'professionally', when I became much more critical of my voice. heheh

I think it's GREAT to have a forum of 'peers'. :)

To be fair, yes... I had planned to back and listen to your others and see if you had done better in them. Everyone has 'bad days', as do I. I've personally recorded several songs over the last few days to consider subbing, then didn't because I didn't like them.

The reason I said 'you could do better', was simply that I heard quality in your voice which indicated you probably COULD do better. If I had just thought you were a completely awful singer, I never would have suggested you could do better.

That's easy. I didn't go to your profile and pick a song... I saw "Abracadabra" listed on the 'most recent subs' page, and I just couldn't resist. Hadn't heard the song in years, but always liked it.

I'm not offended that you posted the quote in the thread... it was beneficial for me. ;)

I just wanted to thank everyone for contributing to this thread.. My original goal was to not lose BeatlesTribute ... Thanks to all of you he is back along with allstar, wannabe, Luly (if only just to not be forgotten)...

Knightshow has even put a song ... wtg Matt

Some want honest critiquing ... others are now willing to take the chance to do that ...

Most seem to be happy with just a positive comment ...

At the end of the day ... this site is not perfect, but has come a long way to try to meet the needs of the many. It is all of you that contribute and banter about ideas that gives Phill the input he needs to try to please us all.

Thankyou all

Thankyou Phill

remember folks, I can't review people's songs here until Tuesday... so don't be thinkin' I'm stuck up. I only had time yesterday and today for a few mins online. I was in PM with Crystal when I subbed them and when I commented to her "Okay, clicking on your song... now for waiting on ten mins for it to begin!"

It actually only took about twenty seconds, so it was a shocker.

I promise I'll be reviewing more on Tuesday or so. I'm still bustin' a left one trying to get this one project done...

As a "newbie" I joined KS several months ago, made a few posts and did a lot of listening. I left people comments ... some replied, some didn't. I have really enjoyed taking time to explore the site and recently subbed a few songs. I was pleased to see that several listened (and maybe 1/3 of them made a comment). I've felt warmly welcomed to the site. Thanks All. :D
I do think that it would be nice if somehow there was a way for a "newbie" category to be created (or at least a symbol near their names on the submissions page) .... so that those of you who have been here for awhile could click on that category occasionally and even if you don't listen to the subs.... at least say hello ... and welcome. This would serve well in keeping new members, I think. It would also help in the making of "friends" ... since it does seem that some listen to their friends, more than they listen to others. If there was a new category (or a way to indicate a "new" member ... it would help promote these new "friendships", maybe. PM's are okay too ... but its nice to see a "new comment" next to one of your subs... you think to yourself.. "hey, someone noticed!". I for one like that.
I also notice a lot of you talking about 2nd page or later subs not getting listened to much... I try real hard to look at a member's profile page ... and if you do that ... you'll see all the subs.... page isn't an issue. Pick a song you'd like to hear...comment... and then move on. This helps get past the "first page only gets listened to" issue.
I also was reading a thread yesterday about "what song did you submit that you wish more had listened to and commented on". Well..... I understand wanting that occur.. because as some have said... sometimes you try very hard on a song and then very few listen. It's nice to have hard work acknowledged. However, I also feel a way to increase "listening" to your subs is to reply to comments. When you take the time to listen to someone's sub ... and to comment .... its nice to have your comment acknowledged.... even if you are a "newbie". I do see that some folks don't visit the site daily or even weekly.... but many do and still do not acknowledge their comments. If you want folks to listen to you ... let them know you appreciate it ... even if all you write is Thanks for listening.... it takes almost no time... and encourages people to listen to future subs.

Thanks to all for making me feel welcomed.... its so wonderful to "meet" so many with a common passion for something. I'm really enjoying being a member.
