You say you dont like the fluffyness of comments so you dont post songs...correct me if I am wrong...but I am a bit annoyed this morning becasue I got a so call honest comment on my sub this morning...

Syberchick70

Great great song but well, timing was a bit off and pitchy and you were missing that tough diaphram 'punch' this song needs, but I understand you were going out on a limb with it, so points for bravery. ;) You could tell you were having fun with it. Keep trying, and maybe redo this one... I think you could do better.

This comment really sums up what I feel about people and honesty...It made me feel like total waste of space...and that maybe I shouldnt be posting songs at all.. wheres the fun in this comment..I would prefer fluff anyday..Like I said before if I wanted my song pulled to bits I would take it to a singing teacher....if you have a problem with a someones song ..tell them to try another mix or something...you should never attack there singing and conferdence like this...it hurts way to much..

Mezza - That was actually a fairly positive critique. If I wanted to be nasty, I could have said much worse. I'm not here to put 'fun' in my comments, but anyone could easily see that I was actually trying to encourage you to do better. I don't have a problem with 'warm fuzzies', but none of us are going to become better vocalists from hand-holding.

The problem with nicey nice comments on subs is that many of the subbers BEGIN TO BELIEVE THEM. I'm NOT asking you to belittle someone where their feelers are hurt. I'm NOT asking you to rip them a new one. I'm NOT asking you to be a SIMON. Simon is a professional, and knows EXACTLY what to listen for, and what to look for in a modern pop environment. Sounds, looks everything.

NOWHERE did I ask for anything like this.

You guys don't want to be honest with your comments, FINE. But what you give out is what I call fluff.

And I'm including myself in this reception. If it WEREN'T for good friends like Tig (and Tigger) that let me know I tanked a song, I MIGHT have begun to believe the ranking I got. What I see now is that people were being kind, and nice, and enjoying the effort. That's not what I want in the submission site, at least not for me.
SHEESH!

I DEFINITELY second THAT 'emotion' ;) LOL

Bingo! What also happens is that people go out with the SS bells still ringing in their ears, believing they are 10+'s, then when they get out in the real world, :bigcry:

I have seen it 1e6 times. People coming to one of our shows, telling us that granma thinks they're the best, then barely get a response from the crowd  What happened to my 10+?

Get real people. Tell it like it is, but don't be rude! We are here to help each other, not pull one another down the drain.

Gunfire?? Well, I haven't read on yet, but I want to pat you on the back for some honesty. Hey, my momma always taught me not to lie. Now granted, that isn't the same as just being 'mean'. 'Honesty is the best policy' I always say, so BRAVO FOR YOU!!! ;)

the thing I love the most about Missy's post:

She made my point FOR me. There is NO better example of what fluff is, and why I don't want comments on my subs.

It's either that, or someone's trying to be mean spiritied. Being told now, almost a month after the fact, is just sad and almost pathetic. That couldnt' be the case now, could it?

There can be NO better reason to include this option now.

Don't worry knightshow, you'll NEVER get 'fluff' from me ;) heheh I just haven't checked your subs yet! I'm taking notes as I type on who wants critiques. =D If you want to see some good examples of folks being honest, check my other thread 'Honest or Rude?'.

Crystal, isn't it fascinating the way the fluffiest, dishonest people are the ones who suddenly turn nasty when they are 'honest'??

Sorry, am I the only one seeing the irony here? LOL

I Like the idea of FREEDOM OF CHOICE...

You go Phill ...

To Critique ... some honest feedback

To Comment ... suggest change to "fluff" .. less confussion on meaning, lol

If you are intrested, check the singers archives "just for fun ??" July 27, 2004. There is some insite on the Critique suggestion, amoung others...

It's good to hear from you Miss Milo...I just wanted to make sure when I said I hoped we were still "good". I realize that things I've said about the SS and things I've agreed with that Matt and Tigrr have said about SS, have bugged or irked people. I'm sorry, people; I swear I'm not a bxtch or troublemaker inherently. My friends think I'm one of the nicest, most giving people they know.

But dern it, MY experience, reiterate, MY experience with the SS has not always been good for me. I should have said before, though, that I appreciated the time and energy people spent listening and commenting on my subs. I just started getting a lil weary when I'd read the same nature of comments from all kindsa people - NOT just people who'd visited my subs - on most other subs. And what really started irking me was seeing subs I knew weren't as good as others, yes including mine - ranked high, high, high and getting tons of comments.

I've always been a stickler for fairness, but I guess it can't always happen in the real world. That's my issue to resolve. So it was better for me to just stop subbing - to just stop the stress I was going thru. As I've said before, I like individual attention and credit when I deserve it. And again, it's no one in particular doing it (shoulda said this in the past); it's just a general thing that happens in SS that I could not handle anymore, and just could not understand. And that is: subs that weren't that great, getting higher ranks and comments than subs that were.

And ya know, I've noticed that there are people here that aren't bugged by the "unfairness", as I've put it. I admire you guys. I wish I could feel that way, but I'm different; I can't. I'm talking about people that are fantastic singers getting lower ranks and less comments than people that aren't as good. Again, I ADMIRE you for being so secure. I guess I'm not. Sorry if us "3" bringing this same thing up over and over again is tiresome. Please just bear with us.....and know that there are some out there (ME) that wish they were as secure in themselves as you are.

OH and Miss Milo sorry I used this post to you to ramble. I needed to let that out.

Wow! This topic just exploded----

Anyhow, why not make people put their musical background/training/education in their bio before they can make a comment (if the background is none, then they should say so) and then any comments made by any individual can be evaluated for "worthiness" by the person critiqued. Just an idea, that way someone, for example, who sings classical would know just how critically they are being evaluated by someone with a classical background as opposed to someone who may have no clue about the genre.

Another $.02 worth from the Mad Scientist (aka DyingMoose)

Good to hear from you Dyingmoose,

1. Any singer hear asking for a Critique is asking something for nothing. If one is serious about improving their singing ability, seek out a vocal coach that you are comfortable with and DONOT LISTEN TO ANYONE ELSE!!!

2. Quality of the recording...most singers hear do not have the time or the money for a professional recording.. they do the best they can with what they have..

Cort
mcentertainment

ps I do not have any formal training in sound engineering or recording technics. Margie has a teaching credential and a minor in music.. Does that make any difference?

u make it sound as tho I'm "using" people here for their knowledge. From what I understand... these people are more than happy to tell me where I could use improvement... syberchick? Jazzy? am I wrong? Cuz if you don't WANT to critique me, by all means, don't. wouldn't want people to think I'm a freeloader.... good grief, Cort... these people have OFFERED their advice time and time again!

Unfortunately Cort, not everyone can afford the luxury of a singing coach... nor the privacy either.

This site from it's inception was designed for singers to sub their works to their peers. AND receive feedback. Now, that message has been lost. SO Phill is trying to rework a few options to allow that to happen again.

Here's ta hoping

And Tigger, I for one would be very upset if you let the words of one person deter you away from subbing. That person is a mean-spirited soul that derives pleasure from dolling out pain. Ignore them. You just keep doing what you do to make you happy!

Matt

DITTO THAT.... Tigger... Matt said it so much better than I could... Cuz all I can come up with is "F### 'em!" LOL! Absolutely do what makes ya happy! sing till you're little heart's content!

I also agree with the Matt on the "get a vocal coach" thing... I thought that's what this site was FOR... to get feedback from fellow singers.... and of course... for those who just wanna sing.
