I'm the type of person that will i won't say lie but i'll Fluff someone that's not that good of a singer.
I feel you can bring a person up or bring them down with what you say, i prefer to bring them up...I know some of my friends say that they had rather say nothing at all then to lie/fluff someone...i just don't agree...They hear good singer getting praise from other's and wonder why they don't...
i believe everyone's level of singing is different, so altho a person may be a 4 out of 10 but does a song better then he/she has done before i see nothing wrong with praising him/her for that.. having said that i also agree that telling everyone that they sound great makes what you say worth a lot less...it's just not in my nature to NOT tell someone that they did well...or there dress is nice or they smell great....whatever. but for some it really makes there day, if they may be having a bad day...Double Edge Sword i guess...

I am a "don't fluff" person. But I will say "good job" to singers who do better than normal on a song.

I don't lie, but I choose to comment on the most positive part of a performance.

For instance, a tone deaf singer can still have a great presence, look, sing with feeling, or just be entertaining. If nothing else "unique" can be applied to anyone.

I can always come up with a compliment.

As a rule, I always encourage. I tell everybody "Great Job!". I don't think of it as lying, simply positive reinforcement.

Now. If someone comes up to me and specifically ASKS for a critique, IE: "How can I sound Better?", "Any Tips", "Do you think I am getting better", "What do you think of my singing?", etc...then I speak the truth.

i really wish i were more of a Don't Fluff kinda guy but i'm not...

i have to edit my post, i feel Tone would be first on my list of things that make a good singer r at least more pleasant to listen to..

i also think mic technique would also help a lot..

I won't tell anyone they are doing bad (if they are) - encourage everyone! Now if they ASK me what my opinion is, I will tell them. However i'll still say it in a way that isn't telling them they suck. Something like," it wasn't bad, there were a couple spots where the ups & downs were in the wrong place (or maybe timing issues, etc) and to listen to the original a little more to work on it but other than than that I think that is a decent song for you". If it really is not a good choice (way out of range or too fast or...)I will tell them to change keys or I can slow it down a couple notches so they can get it down a little better.

I don't think saying, "Good Job" is blowing smoke up anyone's chimney. People have done a good job just by simply putting themselves out there.

I get asked more now about performances than when I Kjed. I got asked a few times by different people two weeks ago. I know they already knew the answer... The timing was off for the verses for one guy. He did a fantastic job vocally but couldn't find the timing. So I told him. I also said that is usually the case where the vocals are too high compared to the music in the stage monitor. The next time you have that happen, have the KJ adjust either the vocals down or the music up at the stage monitor; or, simply back off the mic some and se if you can find the timing. So I was able to be totally honest and give the guy some advice in case it happens again.

There are hosts out there that actively discourage or even lose the slips of anyone but the best singers. They get a lot of complainers but they also have large audiences and seem to thrive despite certain contingents of singers hating them.

There are nights I think some in the audience wish I were way but I am not in the business to hurt feelings. There is always that rare time when someone who starts off poorly actually gets the hang of it and improves. At the very least I try to get applause going for the effort--"She really put her all into that, give her a hand."

I did threaten to break the "Frozen" disc in half if these guys sang "Let It Go" one more time but they were doing a bad job on purpose.

I will always try to get the crowd to clap regardless of singer quality. If someone asks me to be honest with them, then I abide by their wishes even if it means telling them they should never sing a particular song again. They asked me to be honest.

But I do not tolerate booing or hissing. I have pulled peoplre aside many times to let them know that it is just plain rude to do that to someone on stage. I even had someone removed from a venue once because they refused to stop booing singers.

There are places where I think there is a market for this type of show. If you can fill the night with Broadway talented singers, and have that quality of a show every night, I would think there could be a huge market for it as people would come just to listen. I went to a club down in New Orleans, before i ever got into karaoke, and ended up in this karaoke bar. The MC came out on stage after every song and they had people behind the scenes running things, it seemed. Someone told me you had to audition and do well before they would even consider letting you on stage. The place was standing room only.

But I think the average market NEEDS all singers..

if they are going to embarrass my singer publicly, i will embarrass them publicly. if it happens again, they can sing a song or admit that my 5 year old has a bigger set than they do. i hate snipers in the bar.

Agreed, and if that doesn't work I walk over to the boo-er and tell them that they are up next, and they had better be better than the singer they disrespected, or I will LEAD the booing. That usually does it. I have ZERO tolerance for that crap.

Karaoke is NOT about great singing, it's about a great time.

I have publicly shamed booer's in the past, but it is actually so rare that I tend to try pulling them aside first. If they continue to be unreasonable though, I would have no problem shining a light (literally) on them and making sure they feel uncomfortable for their behavior.

I used to have a rule that if you booed then you had to sing the next song. It worked the first time because the person's embarrassed friends agreed and made her do it. The second time it was a rather rough biker chick and when I told her the rule the bartender had to intervene and protect me. But she did get asked to move on.

I use lots of creative phrasing to deal with bad singers that want feedback. "Well, there were definitely some timing issues, but it was a lot of fun!" "Great song choice, everybody loves that tune." "You just gotta project a little more and you'll be golden!" I'll never straight-up tell them they're good when they're not, but you can say anything with a smile and it sounds better.

I had an "over the top" evening Wednesday night. My venue holds slightly over 100 people and the owners were collecting unused chairs from every table to be redistributed. My singers that night were 80%+ excellent singers that truly were worthy of compliments, but even those less talented were given some "creative" comments about their performance. Every singer was part of the extraordinary evening that night, and they deserved some sort of acknowledgement.

Attached is a picture from that night. There were even more people than the camera shows, and if I'd used my other camera with a wider lens, it would have captured most everyone.
