Next time someone says "REAL" singers don't need lyrics.....Show them these photo's. Must just be hack karaoke singers.  Daryl Hall at his new NY club Halloween night. Practically in my back yard.

I'm actually pretty good at that stuff -- I sing a few hundred songs and know the lyrics to all. But it is easy to lose your frame of reference, or just get butterflies. So I do better when I have the lyrics, even though I almost never look at them.
People notice, and they often remark on how I don't look at the screen.

I wish I could remember the words. I've been singing the same (more or less) song for years and I still can't all the time. It just take a little to throw me off.  I wish I could spell.

Springsteen admits it openly. Even after singing a song for 25 years, you can just have a "brain fart". More of a safety net than anything. James Hatfield of Metallica uses one too. Heard him talk about it on The Nerdist podcast, but he calls it a "Word Wedge". Cooler than "teleprompter" I guess.

Hi, I'm Joe, and I'm a monitor addict....
Even though I may know a song by heart, and don't really read it- or even look at it, I'm much more comfortable knowing it's there. I will rarely sing without one.
Emotional / security crutch?
