friday night....karaoke halloween
halloween karaoke is my least favorite type of karaoke i'd rather attend it than host it myself
we had folks in our venue as i hosted and it was a decent size gathering. but i pitched a shut-out. no singers. i had a handful of singers in the room that only stayed an hour or so and bounced. (they'll be back tomorrow)
had halloween been on a saturday, for this venue this friday night could've been somethin'...

Not a normal karaoke night for us, but we had our fifth (and final) preliminary round for our major annual contest... That was over by 10 p.m., and then we did a dance party till 2:00 a.m. with a costume judging at 1:00.
A little over nine hours including set-up and tear down... My butt is dragging, but the place was packed from 8 o'clock till we shut down at 2.
Blurred Lines and All About That Bass were the hits of the night...

A friend and fellow KJ passed away this past Tuesday.
Last night at 6 pm my Lady and I were all dressed up in costume and ready to head out the door to attend a big Halloween Karaoke Party.
We got a phone call just then from the venue that he worked on Friday nights asking if we could do his show (in 3 hrs).
We had not been treated well by this venue in the past but we decided we would do it as a tribute to our friend. We loaded up the equipment in the rain and headed out.
Had a great time and raised some cash for his wife and daughter (donated our fee to them) Broke down the set and loaded out in a heavy downpour but it was worth it all the way.
Doing the right thing always trumps politics in my book.

The competition in our little mountain town was fierce. We had a slightly above average night sales-wise, but we had almost $1000 in comps and gave away about $750 in gift cards. 36 singers and we rocked it from 9pm til 2am. I love "Scary-Oke".

I did a Halloween show at a very nice country club and it was advertised as a costume party. Only 10 out of a hundred showed up in costume To top that I bring a large group of my singers, and their friends, to keep the place hoppin' and they get seated as far away from the stage as possible. One more topper, it was mandatory to pay for the buffet they were serving. So it was like a $24.95 (plus 20% gratuity) cover charge. That was before any drinks were added. No one was happy and I couldn't wait to pack up and get home. I have done many shows there in the past, but this was the last.

Halloween was great!! I did our 4th annual Scaryoke/costume contest at our regular Friday venue and it was a huge success Standing room only and the place was electric! About 75% of the singers sang Halloween related songs which really helped keep the night going.
The venue put up $500 total cash and roughly the same amount in gift cards. We had a variety of categories for the costume contest. Best overall costume, sexiest, couple, scariest, etc. The venue owner selected three "secret" judges to pick the winners and the costumes were some of the best I've ever seen.
I came up with a great idea of playing spooky tv/movie audio clips (exorcist, friday the 13th, munsters, addams family, etc) between singers and giving free "scaryoke shots" (jello shots in plastic ramekin cups) to the first table to correctly identify it. It was a big hit and I'm still shocked at how quiet the place became between singers so they could all hear.
While I'm not a huge Halloween fan, I enjoyed hosting this event and look forward to next year.

I spent my Halloween Night in the ULTIMATE place to be for Halloween.... Castle Dracula in Tihutza (Romania). I went on a Dracula Tour in Romania for a full 7 days. I will post some more in a day or so (going back to NY in a few hours).
PS: I found some Karaoke and sang in Brasov. The "Cueball National Karaoke Tour" has now gone International!

I did a DJ halloween gig Friday night at my venue with no karaoke that ended up being standing room only with almost everyone in costume dancing in the aisles. The last few halloween nights at my venue were fairly slow, so it was a great turnaround.
We had then advertised another karaoke costume contest on Saturday. Good turnout of people, but we had ONE person in costume, not including employees. I guess everyone was costumed out. Instead of giving out the advertised prize, boss man paid the tab of the gal in costume and her husband (about $35.00), and everyone was satisfied, and they had a great time.
So very successful Friday DJ gig, successful Saturday karaoke night, but not so much of a costume contest.

3rd and final Halloween at our downtown Seattle location. New owners are shutting down in December to remodel and will not bringing karaoke back. Somewhat of a bittersweet night since this is out longest running gig at 2 years 9 months. Lots of regulars and new people, 55 deep rotation, and way too much Jaeger.... I am rockin' a onesey... Must say this year the center I do Karaoke for went all out with pasta with meatballs. Had about A dozen or so singers in an hour and a half giving them a chance at three rotations.

On the first day we arrived, all we did was check into our Hotel and meet for dinner. Our tour guide (Radu) gave us a bit of the history about Dracul-a (pronounced Drah Cool A). We had a very nice walking tour in the Pedestrian area (which was a maze of restaurants, bars, shopping, and "massage parlors." We all met for Dinner and then were on our own for the rest of the evening.
On the second day (technically Day 3), we visited Dracula's Tomb at the Snagov Monastery. After that, we checked into our Hotel in Brasov, where I found a place to go for Karaoke later that night (in the Little Germany section of town). The Karaoke was a little different... the KJ did not announce your name. He just had song after song queued up, and the current Singer would just pass the Mic on to the Next Singer as soon as the song appeared on the screen. The KJ was Computer based, and could not play my discs, and they did not accept Flash Drives; however, he was able to look songs up on the computer and stream them. I sang 2 songs that night. I tried to give the KJ a 10 Lei tip when I was ready to leave, but he refused it.
Other sites included us visiting the Bran Castle. We entered the castle and climbed some very narrow and steep and winding staircases... some were even hidden staircases. The views at the top of the castle were BEAUTIFUL!. I purchased a very unique looking wooden Romanian Face Mask (it is heavy). In Sighisoara, we visited the birthplace of Dracula. We went to visit The Black Church, and we were treated to a little show which was a witch trial.
On Halloween, we stayed at Dracula Castle Hotel located in Piatra Fantanele. Across the way, was a beautiful Monastery. Some of us went out on our own to explore the Monastery. We climbed the staircase of the giant Cross next to it. The views were breathtaking. Later that night at the Castle, we had a Bonfire where we were given pieces of meat on a stake, and we had to reach into the fire to cook them ourselves. There was Gypsy music playing for entertainment and afterwards, we were escorted to the main hall for dinner and our Costume Party. There was a second tour group there, and they definitely were the life of the party. One disappointment was that they had their own costume party contest, and our group did not. I thought it was very nice of them to apologize to our group for not including us in their judging... especially since they really didn't know us.
Continuing with the sites, we went on a walking city tour in Sibiu, which included crossing the Liar's Bridge and Central Square. We also visited the Evangelical Church (built in 1300). Being it was a church, we were not permitted to take pictures inside that building. This church was humungous... you would truly be impressed at the site of the Pipe Organ there (over 6,000 pipes).
On Sunday (our last day of activities), I prepared myself for (what I consider to be) the highlight of our trip. We went to Poenari Castle (which was Dracula's Fortress). We had to climb up 1500 stairs, winding up the mountain to get to the top. I wasn't sure if I was going to attempt it, and at one point (when I did), i didn't think I was going to make it to the top... BUT I DID!!!! 12 out of 19 of us actually went up together and we all made it. It was so well worth it. The views atop were PHENOMENAL!!!!! For Dinner, we were back in the first city we started from, and had dinner at Club Dracula. After dinner, we were treated to a little show, where Dracula came out and bit all the Women.
