Okay, I'm on the rampage. You guys hate all of the female songs. It always puzzles me as to why one would start this thread in general discussion instead of KJ. I encourage singers to come on here and I sure as heck am not going to hurt their feelings posting that I hate their songs. Whenever this one comes up I always say the same thing--the only songs I don't like are the ones done at shows other than mine.

Sic of Crazy by Patsy Cline On the other hand my wife sings Lady Marmalade very well. Not many singers sing it or can't.

I'm sure none of us hosts here discourage anyone from singing any song. and I'm sure the starter of the thread just wondered if we have the same dis-likes for good music "done bad" over and over again.

leopard lizard wrote: It always puzzles me as to why one would start this thread in general discussion instead of KJ. The nature of this topic has nothing to do with whether one is a KJ or not. And, there are some people participating in this Forum who are not KJs, who are also probably sick of hearing certain songs performed over and over again each night they go out to Karaoke... so this isn't just a KJ thing. leopard lizard wrote: Okay, I'm on the rampage. It's not all Female Bashing. It's a mix (with the Women leading). Starting with the OP, Earl named a Duet. The tally I came up with was: Duets: 3 Male: 4 (with 2 more unless they are sung good). Female: 15 (with 1 whole artist added on for good measure (does that count as another 20 or 30 songs?)) leopard lizard wrote: I encourage singers to come on here and I sure as heck am not going to hurt their feelings posting that I hate their songs. If they happen to come on here and see a list of popular music that people here feel have been sung to death, and they happen to sing those songs, they might be inclined to expand on their repertoire. Since they don't know us, and we don't know them, common sense would imply that they have to know that no insults were intended (how would we know what songs they sing?).

Exactly, I won't discourage ANYONE to sing anything. It's just songs that are done so often that we'd rather not hear again.

I don't hesitate at all to ENCOURAGE people to sing something other than what they requested if I don't think the songs works for the program. We all have a list of tracks in our heads that we don't like, are just horrible karaoke songs, or have been over played. Many of mine are in this thread.
Every time someone asks for "War Pigs", I recommend they select a different song. To me, it is just a horrible karaoke song. I have never seen a performance of this that engaged a crowd. It isn't a fun song, it isn't a happy song, it isn't a crowd participation song, and the folks that think they are showing their activism side by singing an anti-Vietnam war need to realize that war ended almost 40 years ago and it isn't even and anti-Vietnam war song. I like listening to the original recording and have even heard great covers, but it is one of the worst songs ever for karaoke IMO.
The same goes for many of the songs already posted in this thread. I will suggest they pick another song and explain why. Rarely do I meet much resistance. When I do, it is the insistent drunk people doing it. Most of them won't even remember being at karaoke, much less that I convinced them to sing something else.

I sing War Pigs from time to time, and there are always multiple head thrashers and air guitarists each time I do it. It's fun and the crowd participates the way I do it. I guess your performers aren't doing it right My motivation for singing it also has nothing to do with anti-war activism. Has never even crossed my mind. Do you discourage your singers from singing any of the great anti-war songs from the 60s? It's some of the best music out there. I don't think singing any given 60s Bob Dylan song in 2014 means you are holding onto some sort of misplaced activism. It's just good music. Sorry, just call it what it is. You personally dislike the song. No worries!

It is the folks that say they are singing it because they think it is an anti-Vietnam war song that I dismiss and for the reasons I stated. Now "The Rose"......that song just sucks.

Lon's posting of his monthly song list is an obvious display of just how different one host's show can be from another's. Seventy five percent of Lon's songs I have never heard of let alone sung, seventy five percent of my show's songs Lon has never had done. Granted age, hours of operation, venue, and location play a huge part in this. I don't think there is any hard fast rule about what songs you don't want to hear again but this thread has certainly hit upon several. Keep 'em coming and I'm thinking about updating my books minus most of these. PS Vote #2 .... The Rose sucks along with First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack

Aqualung by Jethro Tull. It's only done by one person at the bar I go to but I just wish he would pick something else for once. ANYTHING else.

I could live out the rest of my days without hearing another George Thoroughgood or Bob Seger song. And if you claim to be a Billy Joel fan, you'd better not say the word "Piano Man" together.

As a singer and bar patron, I'm more than happy to cosign a bunch of these songs, though. Karaoke addicts are in karaoke spots almost as often as hosts--sometimes more, in the case of folks who only do one or two shows a week.

anything by Shania twain. and I hate "honey i'm home" the most of all! But how can you say "It's all good." Shania isn't my favorite, but I think I find her more tolerable now. My Way is probably my least favorite song. I've got it in Spanish on a mariachi cd. It might be more tolerable in Spanish with three trumpets playing harmony, who knows. Turn the Page is overdone, but it's still a great song. I like the live versions of Bob Seger's songs best. I like Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack. I don't like the Fugees version. I've sung Piano Man as a request. I think it's kind of long for karaoke, but I like Billy Joel in general, and I've liked his songs...for the longest time. I never could understand how a song like Send in the Clowns became popular, but if someone wants to sing it, well, it's their song. I use to work with at a place, and a guy I worked with would start whistling Send in the Clowns whenever our boss's boss walked in. He is still working there as far as I know.

Last night I did a private party where they had rented a clubhouse at a resort. A guest went a bit overboard and punched a hole in a door and they were passing the hat to raise money to pay for it.
At the same time two people were singing "Picture" and another two said they wanted to do it right afterwards and blow them out of the water. Normally this is not going to happen for more than one reason, however, I let them do it. But first I announced that we were going to have a "Picture" marathon with couple after couple singing that song and the only way to make it stop was to donate enough money to the door fund. Oddly enough, people sort of got into cheering on the participants and I'm not sure they got enough money although the jar did look rather stuffed. b
