I recently over stress my voice and was horse (sorry if spelled wrong) for a while. Now My vocal range is limited to lower pitch. Can not hit high notes. Every one tells me my natural range will return. So far, it hasn't. It's been about 2 monthsIs there anything anyone can suggest to help me regain my full range. I have refrained from singing for a couple of weeks. Starting to get worried I have ruined it for good. Help!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

Check out a ear nose and throat specialist. Then go back to or start some vox lessons and be patient.

Start with a "mmmm" sound and work up the scales.

Then change to an "nnnnn."

These warm-ups help to clear the nasal cavities, and open the head voice, where your upper register is.

Next, try "ooooohs," then "o's" then "ah's" to help get the tongue shaping differently for vowels.

If you have a keyboard handy, start on, say, middle C, play a scale of a fifth ascending and descending (C D E F G F E D C or do re mi faf so fa mi re do).

Go up a half step to C# and do the same. Go up a half step each time.

Remember to breathe from the diaphragm. You should phyically see and feel your stomach extend like a balloon filling. This keeps the shoulders down (they should NEVER go up when you breathe), and allows the lungs to expand to their full capacity. By learning to tighten the diaphramatic muscle, you can control how long you can support an extended phrase or note.

This won't all happen overnight, so please be patient. If you are experiencing pain in your throat or sinuses, then do see a doctor.

One of the best things I've found to keep my head clear, especially in the winter, is echinacea and goldenseal (GNC is the most fresh and potent). It's herbal, and comes in capsules, so you don't need to mess with measuring things. I also keep those Halls Breezers handy.

Good luck!

I have found a nice home type remedy too...

It is from any drugstore, and it is a nasal type spray that is 100% natural....it is salt water from France (so they say).

Salt water is supposed to keep nose and throat problems away (it says on the box and on the instructions that people who live in salt water environments have less problesm with their nose and throats....I have not done any research myself, just getting the info that came with the stuff)....and this stuff is NOT like the Dristan stuff that tears apart your nasal cavities. It is simply water that goes into your nose to keep your nose and throat hydrated.

It has worked WONDERS for me....and I love it. I feel less flemmy when I sing, and it has broadened my range like you would not believe.

Now, it may not work for you....I would not suggest doing anything without going to a doctor first....because you don't want to hurt yourself.

Nose and throat specialist is the best because they can tell you if you have damaged your cords and how to fix it.

:)

Salt is a good fixer-upper. I don't know how old you are, but when I was younger, we used to gargle with hot salt water to help alleviate pharyngitis (that nasty feeling on the back of your throat that feels like either a lump or a hole whenever you swallow), caused by sinus drainage. Nasty to the taste, but it worked.

You need to be careful with too much salt though, as it can burn the tender tissues of the throat, so should be taken in moderation.

Shooting it up your nose I've heard about. You can buy saline solution at the chemist's. I don't know if it's from France, but it's the salt, not the water.

This salt water spray thing....... What's it called, Rits??

I gotta get me some of that. My nose is ALWAYS stuffy and I refuse to use Dristan n stuff. When I sing really relaxed, my voice is very whiney and nasaly..... but if I try real hard to not sing outta my nose, I sound like I have a cold. My m's sound like b's and my n's sound like d's

EXAMPLE:

"subtibes I'b too stuffy, so I deed to blow by doze!"

ya think that stuff'll work fer me??

Yea! Thanks for all the advice. I will give some of them a try. I have been doing voice exercises, scales and all. Think it's time to see the doc. Will keep you all informed.

SOrry, that Sinus stuff I have is called Hydra Sense...you can get it at any store I am quite sure.

The directions say to use it about four times a day...or when needed. I ususally do it before I go to bed at night, and in the morning before I go to work....whenever my nose feels dry. It is also WONDERFUL when you come home from a bar....after singing karaoke....and inhaling smoke all night....it just sooths it all down so nicely :)

I don't know the salt content of it, I would have to look, but thank you for your advise....as I did not know salt does that to your throat....perhaps I should quit with too much of the salty sunflower seeds I like to eat :) LOL!

If you want more info, Crystal, let me know and I can email you a site....or just look up on London Drug's website (that is where I first found it)

:)

They had a sample of one of those throat sprays at our local Karaoke store. Yuck :( :( I would rather not sing than use that stuff. And the after taste would not go away.....

This spray stuff is not really a bad tasting thing.

Do you know that feeling that you get when you have water up your nose (i.e. accidentally inhaling when you are underwater)....

That is the only "bad" effect of this stuff....but it only lasts for a couple of seconds....it is not bad tasting at all....it is water and that is about it :)

I have heard of really bad tasting ones...but this is just basically putting water up your nose (sorry to sound disgusting) and having it go into your nasal passages and your throat as well :)

I had the same problem once, so I saw an ear, nose, and throat specialist.
After a two week regimen of Predisone and NO speech, (not even a whisper), I was as good as new.

Hello all! I'm new here. I have been in the industry for about four years after marrying a vocal coach. We specialize in vocal health and vocal mechanics and have helped thousand of singers achieve their goals, produce more pleasing sounds and make it through adversity to the next show.

There are quite a few throat sprays and lozenges on the market. The best ones we found are Vocaleze, Entertainer's Secret and the Thayers products (lozenges and sprays). Stay away from menthol and alcohol based sprays and Hall's, for these can actually do more harm than good t the singers' throat/instrument, even though they provide some temporary relief.

I would need to know specific symptoms to point you in the right direction, but am willing to help.

Remember, many issues can be helped by learning proper technique. And a number one rule: If it hurts to swallow DO NOT SING!

Scott
