I just had a flashback and remembered, long before I started as a KJ, that my favorite KJ I followed back then had some kind of opening speech (for a lack of better term).
He said things like how to sign up, please join the team effort and clap after each singer, even if you don't sing do acknowledge the courage to get up here and sing and other small and short courtesy rules. And I remember that that gave me that bump when I first went to his show to actually get up there and sign up, because I was alone at the place and just wanted to see what it is about.
I kind of want to bring this back. What are your thoughts and ideas what to implement in this "speech"? I also don't want it to be too long, maybe 1-3 minutes max?
At the moment I sing a song first, then welcome everyone to Karaoke, explain how to sign up and tell them if you have any questions to feel free to come up and ask me. And then I get the show on the way. I feel like I should do more than this.

Mine goes something like this: "Welcome, and thank you for hanging out at XXX Saturday night. Holy cow, it is karaoke night here at XXX, and we will be starting in just a few minutes. If you'd like to sing, there are books here on my table to my left, your right. Find a book, find a song, sing a song; it's free, it's fun, it's easy. If you are not quite ready to sing a song, you'll notice a bar to my left your right with all the sing juice you need....for a nominal fee. That's XXX, XXX, and XXX taking good care of you all night long, make sure you take good care of them as well. Again, we'll be starting in just a couple minutes, thank you for hanging out with us tonight." I change a few particulars here and there, but I have often thought I could almost just record my intro and play it as an MP3 most days for the past 10 years!

Hiya Folks. I am the boss. If you don't like it, GTFO. Sound Choice is awesome. You can't sing anything else. If you don't like it, GTFO. Buy food and drinks or GTFO. It's $100 to sing songs I don't like, only $10 to sing the ones I do like. Don't like it? GTFO.
Oh...and have a great time folks!

Mine (for the few shows I've done) has been fairly simple....
"Good evening everyone and welcome to XXXXXXXXXXXX. My name is Cueball, and for those of you who don't know, it's Karaoke night, and I am your host for the show. If you want to sing, please fill out a song request slip which include the name you want to be announced as, and the song selection. I have books circulated throughout the bar, broken up by both Song Titles and by Song Artists. Please make sure that you write down the full song code that is listed in my books.
I have 3 simple rules...
1. Please applaud for all of the Singers that get up to sing. It takes a lot of courage for some of them to get up and do so... And, for those who need some additional courage, XXXXXX is your 'Alcohol Intake Coordinator,' and will be serving up all the 'Liquid Courage' that you feel you might need to get up and and participate.'
2. Do NOT hand me a song slip request with someone else's name on it without their knowledge. Don't hand me a slip on someone else's behalf, thinking that they will sing that song (or even sing at all). If they don't want to get up to sing, you are wasting my time and everyone else's time as well.
3. Please take care of XXXXXXXX, your 'Alcohol Intake Coordinator.' He/She/They are working very hard for you."
At the last place I worked, there was a 4th rule (requested by the Bartender). 4. "Please keep the Women's Room clean."

Good Evening Folks and thank you very much for coming out to _______!! My name is Chris with Feel Good Productions and we are doing KARAOKE tonight! We are here every _______ from ___ to ___ and we invite you to come back and see us if you are free!
We are just moments away from starting things up, so let me tell the new folks how this works. We don't do the paper slip thing here so you need to come up and see me with your name and the title of the song you want to perform. You will notice plenty of song books scattered around the bar so pick a song from the book or pick a song out of thin air and come on up and let me know. The books don't have every song in our extensive library though so.....
If you can't find a song you like in the book, come ask anyway! I am happy to search for the song and if it is available to purchase, I will buy it, download it, and make it available for you tonight!!
So don't be shy, come on up, tell me your name, the song you want, and let's have a great time!
Oh! Be sure to take care of ________ behind the bar! They will be working hard tonight to make sure you don't go thirsty! be sure to ask them about the drink specials!
Let's Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! (only used during world cup season)

Mine is:
Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to XXXXXXXX for this karaoke night. If you want to sing please fill out a slip. There are slips, pens and books circulated round the place. I am happy to have duets etc. If there is a large group that want to sing together plesase come and speak to me. You are welcome to bring drinks on to the side of the stage where there is a table and I am happy for anyone to smoke on stage if called just after they've lit up. Any further questions please come and ask, I hope you all have a great night.

Chris, 1) I don't use really use slips anymore either. I have a good memory, and would rather the singers just tell me what they'd like and pop it into CompuHost. I do still have slips, just in case anyone is intimidated or just wants to fill one out, but my regulars know I put them in the rotation as soon as I see them, then they just tell me their song once I call them up. 2) I liked your GTFO intro better.

I incorporate many of the elements previous posters have submitted... and rather than go through my spiel.. I'll just mention one other: Sometimes I'll mention that "There's a rumour going around that Cathy, our bartender, is not allowed to accept tips... Well Folks, I'm here to tell you that just isn't true. You have our wholehearted permission to tip as much and as often as you want."

In reality, my opening monologue is more improv than a set speech. It is never the exact same thing every show. What I typed above was improv as well. I don't think I have ever said exactly what I typed (though I am for my next show!)
We don't like hearing our singers sing the exact same song every week any more than they want to hear us make the exact same announcements every week.

but it got old pretty quickly so I had to stop
