What songs have you removed from your books, either temporarily or permanently.

None, and don't ever plan to (if I ever host another show).

Since the club I work doesn't allow language on stage, anything with language is not listed in the books. The upper majority don't miss them.

None. There are lots I would like to remove just I wouldn't have to ever hear them again, but it isn't about me.

In fact, I also spell out the "bad words" in my books.

Go to http://FeelGoodPros.com/Songs and do a search for the "F" word.

My "Bar Books" have nothing removed. There are some songs that as a female I found a bit disturbing and I was going to remove them but then once you start, where do you stop so I just left everything as is.

My "Kid Show Books" have all songs removed that have to do with sex, drinking, drugs, "bad words," etc. which means there are only a few songs in them. If it is a private party or older kid event then they can ask me for the more adult songs but if it is billed as a "Family" event or is for the Boys and Girls Club or a school then I play to the safest common denominator.

seattledrizzle, I'm assuming that your are from Seattle (DUH) so your customer base is probably way younger than mine in Florida. Most on the forum knows that I am a censor Nazi, and I am, but I will have to say that it has worked extremely well for me. It is also no secret that I own thousands of original karaoke cd's, and I have a very large "no repeats" song book of 17000 songs which does not include any specialty songs such as Christmas, TV themes, parody, show tunes, etc. (I have books containing those songs for those special occasions). The 17000 songs contains no rap, head bangers, or songs over 5 minutes (15 seconds of wiggle room).

First of all my shows run from 7-10 PM and only a couple dozen children (in 10 years of shows) have ever been in attendance. My average age at my shows is probably close to 60 and most grew up with in the 1950's and 1960's, so those are the years of music most familiar to them. There are a quite a few of them that have kept up with the newer country, but very few newer pop songs ever get requested. It seems my cut off is about 1990 for pop. Not one rap song, other than Baby's Got Back, has ever been sung during my 10 years of hosting. The "F" word has never been sung. The likelihood of one of my regulars singing a rap song or screaming some vulgarities at the top of their lungs is pretty remote, but occasionally I get some younger singers that like to use the stage for "shock value" with no concern at all as to who is listening. Occasions like that is what prompted me to remove certain types of music from my books.

My job is to keep my target audience coming back and I have very successfully done that. You need to figure out who you wish to cater to and make your decision based on that.

8) I ran my shows exactly the same way mrmarog and had steady work six days a week, until retirement. I always used the mom rule, could I play the song for my mom, she was pretty liberal but there were limits.

For being too long:

American Pie
Scenes From An Italian Restaurant
War Pigs (All Versions Except DG)
Can't You See (All versions except CB)

For being too stupid and offensive:

Rodeo Song
Ode To My Car

The older shows have a comfortable atmosphere but the one problem I had was that one by one the regulars would die and then there were no younger ones coming in to replace them.

The other thing is, it was the older people who made me buy "The Pussycat Song," "The Rodeo Song," and "The I-95 Song." There is a woman in her late 60s who regularly does "Strokin'." Decent or Indecent probably has more to do with what style a venue wants to portray rather than with just age itself.

I did say "my target audience" which does not include every one over 50. If they want those types of songs they can hang out with those that do. It is their choice. I do not need to be politically correct to be successful and I do not need to cater to every one either. It is still a free country and we grew up having choices.

None. If we do a private party and there are kids, it's up to the party host whether or not certain song can be done.

No songs removed. I have actively avoided buying the sex pistols version of My way though.
