Marble - I respectfully ask that you disregard the naysayers.

Why??? Because someone has a difference of opinion? Are you in denial? Can't face the reality of it all?

You can be very aggravating.

I provided a perfectly valid reason (and all the reason I am going to give) in the post you extracted the quote above from.

I say rent a building with some tables and chairs in it and advertise that you'll be doing karaoke every night there. See how many people show up. It's all about drunks in a bar for god's sake. Doing a karaoke show 7 nights a week for a couple of years made me lose my appreciation for the "art".
Karaoke does not = drunks. It's all in the clientele. And it doesn't necessarily mean water drinkers either. Sure we get our share of both, but the majority of singers are good to great that spend money all night & can still sing. 7 nights for 20 years hasn't soured me on anything. I don't look as karaoke as an 'art' per se, but some people definitely have their own twist that can make it an art to watch.

Thanks for all your replies... When I've reached my own conclusion I will respond in full.

The key thing of interest was how restrictive the medium of karaoke is... This painting by my partners late grandfather was equally restrictive.

If karaoke isn't art, then neither is this.

Thanks again

Like I said, I don't think that there is one KJ, including you Cue and your little "likers" who would actually appreciate some drunk coming up to sing, if you could call it that and...

scream into the microphone, bumping into/spilling a drink and damaging your equipment or knocking over a monitor, or dropping your expensive wireless mic on the ground. And, it could drive the good customers away. They didn't come out here to be repulsed by some loudmouth drunk. But, If you DO like this type of behavior and still feel I'm being insulting, then please accept my apology, but I don't think that any KJ would stand for this... even you, Cue.

What kind of singers do you get?

Like I said above, it doesn't happen that often. In fact I rarely have a problem with drunks but the fact remains that it DOES happen. I'm sure youi've all experienced it.

The last time I had to deal with a drunk was about 7 months ago. There was this fowl mouth drunk who came up while a patron was singing, grabbed an extra mic and started singing (screaming) along with the singer. He was not invited to come up. I stopped the show, grabbed him by the collar and personally escorted him out of the building. Everybody applauded and the show resumed. I have no tolerance for this. Point is, like I said it rarely happens but sometimes it does.

It took this thread to come to my theory but in my mind karaoke is no different to a 'paint by number'picture.... Creative people will always be creative and people who are restricted by the format can still offer something of value.

Now that I can agree with. :)

I like that better than my dancing analogy.

Art is what you see from waking up in the morning till going to sleep at night.
A beautiful sunrise that I admit to never having seen.
Driving through a busy town.
The dirt, the hydrants, the beggars. It is all art.
You however may decide it is not your art.
That is fine.
Maybe it depends on you.
How your perceptions defines... Art.

A singer at karaoke to a deaf person is still an art form. Good, Bad or....
Singers are called artists for a particular reason.

The art of...
War, Drinking... Care to fill in the blanks here.

Even posting a stupid comment on a karaoke forum is a form of art.
Possibly not a wise one.

The best I can come up with after much consideration is that.......
Art which is art to you. Not your neighbours art.
Just yours.... Is art.

Yes Ladies and Lounge Lizards this is it Karaoke. Karaoke is the ancient Japanese word for “Drunk white people making a fool out of themselves in public. By their own choice” Well, maybe that isn’t a direct translation but that is what has become since gaining its popularity in the late 1980’s. Millions go to Karaoke all across America everyday. I set out to find out what draws the “American Idol” hopefuls to go out and do it even if they don’t have the talent to back it up. In my search I found that Karaoke is more then just a hobby that allows you to dress like Leisure Suit Larry and pretend to be a pop superstar. Karaoke can be Art.
