What's wrong with nickelback?

As Dave Grohl puts it:

"If you play a Nickelback song backwards you'll hear messages from the devil. Even worse, if you play it forwards, you'll hear Nickelback"

Rules at POETS Karaoke:
1) Always give each singer the clap (they can take a pill for that nowadays, no worries).
2) Do not butt into another's performance without permission (I recommend asking them in writing on the back of a $20 bill).
3) Oral supporters who join the listed singer should wear knee pads (or at least have built up calluses).
4) Bring your drink with you; if there's a beer break --er, a bridge I mean-- in the song you'll need something to whet your whistle.*
5) If you forget your drink at the stage after your song it's considered alcohol abuse and will be announced as such over the mic. Never abandon your drink; the KJ may keep it.
6) If you blow into the mic before your performance the KJ will ask loudly if you just gave her microphone a blow job.
7) Heckling the singers is MY job, not yours. Union rules.

Actual "rules" that I may mention quietly and privately to customers as needed:
a) don't cup the mic head
b) don't hit the mic head
c) treat the corded mics like you would your speakers or your kitchen blender; you wouldn't swing either of those from their cord, would you?
d) if you're too drunk to look it up, write it down, or ask for it intelligibly, you're too drunk to be near my equipment

* I have occasionally relieved a singer of their drink onstage when they were in danger of losing its contents on the floor. In that situation I politely "help" them save their drink, and if come up to sing again I tell them privately that I'll need them to set their drink down away from the equipment.

Back when smoking was allowed in bars, yes. But I kept an ashtray handy. I've been very pleased with how my Shure PGX24 with an SM58 capsule has held up to the abuse, going on 11 years now. Of course, I have to change the ball every few years, but that's nothing unusual.

Yes, always handy to have an ashtray, although most people used to hold their cigarettes while they sung.

The front page of my song book has a long set of rules, some serious but mostly for the fun of it.

It starts with:

* Wining? Absolutely. (It is a wine tavern.)

* Whining? Faugedaboudit!!!

I also mention once or twice: NO DIVAS!!! ("Anyone acting 'the Diva' may encounter random delays in being call to the mic. -- all at the discretion of the KJ.")

Since no Diva would ever openly admit to being a Diva? It works to help keep Divas in line.
