I don't know if it's regional or not, but I do advertise the fact & that could be a factor.

It could be that (as Lonman mentions he advertises the fact) when they know you can do it, they start bringing in discs.

I have had people bring in notebooks full of discs and just leave them up with me for the duration of the show. I have even had a few leave discs with me to carry so that they don't have to do it. Makes me a bit nervous but I have one of those in my binder right now.

If someone brings in a custom that looks like a Craigslist fly by night illegal burn then I have ordered those songs myself so that I at least have a "legit" copy for the night. Telling them they have a bad disc just gets you into the "but the site says it's legal" round and round and I've yet to have anyone believe me.

Two things I do keep in mind are that people who bring in discs usually do it so that they can have their familiar version or because they want to have a unique, rare song that no one else sings. Sometimes I will get ideas from that of good songs to order but other times it is no use spending that much money for one person who wants to remain "unique" anyway. Then there is the strange phenomena of telling them you have the same song, same version and they still prefer their own disc.

The other thing is I have had people say they had a great time and they will be sure to be back next week and then they don't turn up until months later. And now they are tired of those 10 songs I ordered and want me to get.....10 different ones.

It will be interesting to see if the customers trained to instant gratification via downloads on the fly will feel an impact from the no fly list. I will hate to go back to "But the guy down the road has it."

I think there are a lot of factors involved with people bringing discs.

Lonnie has been at the same locations for 20+ years. He has been there during the entire cycle of the rise and fall of discs. He has always played customer discs and folks know this AND he advertises it. So of course, he will have more people that bring them in.

I have only been at this for 4 years. Discs (IMO) died before I even started hosting. My clientele is also mostly 20-30 something. A base that has grown up in a digital age and don't own much of any physical media. They never bought karaoke discs so they never bring them. I would also say that my geography also influences it as I service a VERY tech savvy audience.

That said, I posted in another thread about the more rural venue with a 50+ crowd that brought discs. But they were very happy for me to provide downloads and allow them to leave their discs at home.

In general, it is the more rural, older crowd that might still bring discs. The younger, suburban crowds do not even know karaoke comes on discs.

Well, after decades I still have yet to have a night without disc bringers. Again, this just makes my life easier. It also brings me a LOT of singers- of all ages - whose discs are refused elsewhere, especially if the KJ also refuses to list his versions in the book. I thank them for that.....

Since Jan 1st of 2014, we have delivered 575 karaoke nights at a total of 12 different venues.

# of times discs brought in by customers = 1 (which was last week)

Then it MUST be a regional thing. This area the age range for an average night of Karaoke is 25 - 70. The older one DO tend to have their own discs. The younger ones don't.

And that seems to be the general consensus... that the older people (like me) are the ones who are more likely to bring their own discs with them (or even flash drives).

As I noted a few more posts up, my crowd is mostly 20-30. The one exception is my newest location which is a much older crowd (so far). That is where the one disc request came from as well.

I've got one in her 30s who brings discs but she is from a family of long time karaoke people so she was raised with the concept. She is tech savvy but they have a large collection of discs so that is what she brings.

Again, I wonder what effect the no fly list may have. If people can only get certain artists by importing a disc from overseas then there may be a weird situation of the more current hits only being available on older technology. It is not the direction that I had wanted to see but it may happen.

I don't see it impacting things at all.

I did a spot check on an iRC Download channel a moment ago. Tracks that are only available via download are plentiful. Lots of Karaoke Version as well as tracks by SBI, Sunfly, and SBI that have their download ID's intact.

So long as piracy is thriving, the KJ and the singers will have plenty of access to music no matter what the rights holders do.
