I am mainly asking James for his opinion on this, but anyone else in the manufacturing business that has credible knowledge is welcome to chime in.

My question is, how did the No Fly List form? I know there have been a few no fly's for a long time but the list really took off of recent. It seems the Artists are across the board when it comes to publishers. Who is driving this and how does it work in general? Please provide adjusted question(s) if I failed to ask properly.

This would be a great place to pose any related questions from those that wish to inquire but I would like to keep the answers to first hand and not second hand if at all possible.

Do you mean artists that do not allow their work to be licensed as karaoke?

Where is this "No Fly List" located? I've never heard of such a thing.

EDIT: Nevermind...I found it on the Digitrax site. The funny thing is that there are thousands of karaoke tracks available from the artists on that list.

yes, Artists who do not want their works to be recreated and sold for karaoke. The overseas manufacturers are now honoring the list as far as downloads are concerned..

Yes the list is increasing exponentially it is over twice the size it was a bit over a year ago. Artists from all publishers are included and until recently it applied to Us here in the USA only (due to our opt in licensing) recently much to the dismay of the PRS licensed (UK) manufactures the publishers have begun filling out the paperwork to opt out of licensing in the UK as well.

Opt in licensing requires an agreement for tracks to be made for karaoke and negotiation of fees involved... this is the USA licensing model.

Opt out licensing has set fees and allows any track to be produced for karaoke unless the publishers fill out paperwork to exclude the tracks... this is the licensing model that the rest of the world as a whole uses

Thankfully, KV is still selling "NoFlies". I was able to get Wasted Years, from Iron Maiden. Had my eye on it for a while, figured I better get it quick.

Sunfly has their stuff still up as well. Or they did yesterday. I think the deadline is July 1. I don't know what that means but I have seen two people (Zoom and Customburn) use that date.

Probably because July 4th is Independence Day and the publisher will be celebrating their break from the UK and securing their draconian rule over what we can and can't use for something as benign as karaoke.

Speaking of......I need to start writing my annual thank you letter to the Queen.

As far as I can tell all these artists are part of Universal record label so I suspect that it is currently just Universal that is not allowing karaoke.

Karaoke downloads is just part of Universals thing, they are also going after sites that sell regular music by those artists/writers in download & digital streams as well.

Yea being in the LARGEST country state in the union I'd say I noticed Country. At least with country music I can understand the words and it's not just a bunch or yelling, screaming, rapping, ear splitting music.

Other than country give me the oldies say early 80's and before. Yep I'm showing my age

Here is a question I think Jim is best suited to answer...
does it take only one of the writers to make a sing not usable for karaoke,or just one writer to override that and make it ok? for example hotel California...
does it only take Glenn Frey to make it not usable even if the others were ok, or does Don Felder giving his permission make it ok even if the others say no.

I believe Jim said in the past that only one owner needs to give their approval.

That would explain Killing The Blues - Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Plant doesn't want his precious Zeppelin music or his poor quality solo music to go the Karaoke route, but suddenly this one comes out. I guess Alison has a more favorable outlook on Karaoke.
