one of my personal karaoke theories that i try to live by:

i believe to achieve longevity at a venue: the staff must love you AND the patrons must love you. i didn't say like, i said LOVE. if the staff loves you but the patrons don't love you, your days are numbered. if the patrons love you, but the staff don't love you, your days are numbered. you may not be gone that week or that month, but your days are numbered if you don't have both. just my opinion.

so, when i'm working, i keep in mind that i need to make the staff love me. and i do my best to make the patrons love me. not like. LOVE.

My tip is to never become a lazy host.

I think I read that here one year and it stuck with me. It basically means to just always go that extra mile when doing your job. Do everything "the best you can" and don't skimp. Don't get lazy just because you can.

Never wait for a minimum amount of singers to start the show. Big peeve when I go to others shows & have to wait for that 5th singer to sign up even though I may have been sitting there 30 minutes after the show was supposed to start, but only hearing regular music playing until they get a certain amount of singers.

My rule is that I start my show when I get 15 singers signed up which is usually 20 to 45 minutes BEFORE my posted start time :D My philosophy is "if I'm there and ready to go why not start the show EARLY!

If I don't have 15 singers signed up before my start time I will wait and start at my normal posted time.......but never late!

Here's another important one... I never, ever put down another karaoke host or business. I can't count the number of times I've had patrons come up to me with some tale of woe regarding another host's style, equipment, procedures... whatever. My reply is always some variation of "Everyone is entitled to their own style."

I learned a very long time ago that you cannot build yourself up by tearing someone else down. Chances are, it'll come back to bite you in the arse.

Above all else, have fun. The patrons have more fun if YOU are having fun. Everyone likes to do the Cupid Shuffle around here, and The Wobble, sometimes Cotton Eye Joe. So I will put in a quick little dance set in the middle of the night, unless I have a lot of singers. I get up and dance with them. Mind you, I am a bout as graceful as a cow, so people get a kick out of it.

Well I have never had a gig long enough to apply it for myself, but every single host that I know who is successful around here. with maybe one exception, is CONSISTENT.

They have a set way of doing their rotation, and they STICK with it, no matter who is giving them a bad time *including the owner once*

They treat every single person who comes into the venue EXACTLY the same.. No preferential treatment

If the owner or manager wanted to suddenly change their night, unless it was a special occasion they would usually say no and point out that they signed a contract.

-James

as far as philosophies go, one of my main ones is "Karaoke is NOT about singing, it is about having FUN"

That's really great advice, Earl. I agree with you but I do have a question. If you knew that the other host was a pirate, operating illegally, would you warn the bar owner about the risk they are taking by employing him. Personally I have mixed feelings about this but just wanted your opinion because I really like the above advice you left.

@Alan...

How would I know that another host is a pirate, short of personally inspecting his/her library? And, needless to say, that's not something I would care to do.
I'm certainly not going to take someone else's word for it.

Personally, I don't want to know if someone is a pirate. I'd much rather concentrate on making my own business the best that can be. And right now, my business is doing very well.

I suppose if that makes me part of the problem (since I'm not part of the solution), so be it.
