With the death of KJ Pro and the associated crippling of the MP3G+Toolz renaming functionality, I am re-evaluating how I go forward with my Rip, Rename, File process.

What I have been doing is this -

Rip new discs using CDGRip to 320kbps MP3+G
ZIP and Rename using MP3G+Toolz
Verify using KJ File Manager
File by Vendor then by DiscID

Here are the changes I plan to make -

Rip new discs using CDGRip to WAV+G (for maximum fidelity)
?? Rename ??
?? Verify ??
File by Vendor then by DiscID (unchanged)

I am flexible on the ripping side because I am perfectly happy with 320k rips. But, I recently ripped a 1/2 dozen new discs as WAV+G and found that there were fewer failures/issues with the resulting files. The downside is that KJ File Manager sees *ALL* WAV+G files as bad so it will not rename the contents of zipped WAV+G. In fact, it deletes the files without warning. I can resolve this issue be going back to 320k rips, but then I increase the error rate.

Finally, I am looking for a bulk file renaming utility to replace MP3+G Toolz. MP3+G Toolz renamed files by doing a query to KJ Pro based on DiscID. It was only as good as the KJ Pro database, but it was easy enough to compensate for the KJ pro anomalies.

It appears that Music Book Deluxe does not do any renaming of files, only of tracks listed in a local MDB database.

Deb's File Renamer does not do any database lookup at all. It relies on an existing files name to do it's magic.

CDGRip doesn't always find discs in the CDDB lookup, but it will let you input the DiscID when it can't find it which provides a baseline for renaming with other tools.

I would like to move to WAV+G for ripping CDG's, but it adds a LOT of work to my current method of working with files with the only upside being that I capture the full dynamics of the original recording.

For the time being, I am sticking with 320k MP3+G rips to keep labor time down.

Anyone else have any suggestions for streamlining the process?

all i can say is i do it one disc at a time.
using the databases is how i ended up with....
ozzy osbourne
ozzy osborn
ozzie osbourn
ozze ozborne (my personal favorite wtf name)
and the stuff like
lita ford & ozzy osbourn
ford, lita & ozzy osbourn
ozzy osbourne & lita ford
etc, etc, etc.

it really only takes me an extra 2 minutes or so after Audiograbber looks on freedb to do a quick edit.

I use CDGRip, use the FreeDB to name them, which doesn't always work, then I sit there and rename every file one at a time the way I want them. I like mine Artist-Title-Number. I have my own numbering system.

...Ripping: Mostly use the Power CD+G Burner (1 or 2), sometimes KJRIP-n-ZIP and sometimes CDGRip. The "sometimes" are for certain All Star, Best Karaoke and Top Tunes CDGs. Like the ripping options better on the Power Burner Software (zip, MP3+G,Wave and Bin). Learned my lesson about ripping speeds a while back (now it's only x1 or x4). I used to rip in zip format (128) but then changed to MP3+G (320). Did do some in WAV and Bin but with MP3+G's popularity, I decided to stick with the MP3+G format. Some players don't play WAV and or Bin).

...I use the RoxBox Player (includes KJSongBook) which I use for my books, only because of it's simplicity. I do like the Siglos Karaoke Professional Player because it plays bin files and or course CDGs.

I set up a tower with 6 drives and use Audio-Grabber set to allow multiple instances.

I set the disc ID based on Music Book Deluxe's database and don't worry about the actual file names.

Once I have the disc ripped, I open MBD's Karaoke File Renamer (KFR) and rename the entire disc at once.

I have obtained discs that were not in their database and by adding/saving those to a separate book file, I can submit them to MBD for inclusion.

I started working with this product about 7 years ago and they responded to my request by adding the ability to populate your "pre-list" with as many disc as you like and then have the KFR run through a directory and rename every thing in the format you desire.

Once I have that, I use a couple of free tools I found years ago, one is called MP3G to ZIP which binds the files together in a zip file with the proper name, based on the file names. The other is ZIP Contents Renamer which, as the name implies, renames the contents of a zip file to the same name as the file itself. I use the second one to batch process download files after I have added my own track ID to those file names. I use a third utility called "Better File Renamer" to add that ID to the zip file.

By ripping as many as 10 discs at a time by using different computers and then batch processing the resultant files, I can cut the time down significantly.

I use Bulk File Renamer (Freeware) and KJ File Manager (Latshaw Systems). between the two of them I get everything done.

For Ripping I use Power CDG Burner. It does a much better job than CDGrip. I don't get the errors in power CDG Burner that CDGrip seems to cause.

For Books I use Latshaws Song List Generator.

Actually Music Book Deluxe DOES rename files AND will read folders to create a database. It's an add on software called "Karaoke File Renamer" or "KFR", you can download it free from their website. They have had it in place for about 8 years.
