btw.....I emailed Bob Latshaw because the current version of SLG only exports to Excel 97-2003 format which means it will hit the top end limit of 65536 rows. He agreed that should get changed and added it to a list of updates. He is using a 3rd party utility to do the export so he said he would look for an updated version that supported versions of Excel after 2003 which support 1,000,000 rows.

Whatever limitations you had with Excel have been gone for a very long time..

Long gone.

Thanks to Microsoft Office's Interop, a beginner programmer can take advantage of all of the Office features. Really, really easy to use. That's why so many programs can import and export anything to/from Office products.

I should have mentioned that I use KJ Pro software for my books, and the mfr. IDs are filled in automatically when the disc number is entered, along with title, artist, and all other info.

Unfortunately, KJ Pro just recently shut down, and I am having trouble transferring to the new laptop via the disc.

I might be screwed, but the new computer ( a Lenovo ) has direct cable software that may solve my problem- if I can find a dam dual full-size female/female USB cable, that is....

Mine are printed with just one version but I have the master on a laptop at the show so if someone asks if I have a different version or if a disc malfunctions I can quickly find a substitute. One exception is the Elvis section where I did print every brand because at one time I had some impersonators coming who had version preferences. The other is Janis Joplin because I had some old timers who preferred the Legends versions and others preferred the SC. I do print what brand the versions are in the books.

I hand type mine on Excel also as I like to put in all sorts of sorting codes like Holiday or Kid Safe or Duets, etc. I have a separate set of books for kid shows and some with just the Latin Songs and a Christmas/Holiday book. For some reason once I type in a song I will usually remember that I have it if someone asks. That will change as the books get bigger or I get older, I'm sure.

Even though I am still a disc show I would find it difficult to function without the laptop there. If I get an illegible slip I can quickly look up the number instead of hunt down a book or the person to make them do it over. I really want to do the Smart Phone access because with the Customs available I do tend to buy more songs more often so keeping the books from getting too confusing with additions requires too much printing over.

He could easily offer an option to use the excel loaded on the machine, identify the version, and fill in past the 65K limit if the version is newer. I do this all the time in stuff I write for work.

That would be a ridiculous amount of songs.

I emailed him because I am only about 2500 Tracks away from the limit. I will hit that limit before the end of the year.

maybe a dozen times in almost 7 years someone picked a version, a dozen times a night getting "what do the versions mean?"
but at least that way it is only one line per song so no extra pages in your book necessary with all the information.
i still have all versions listed on my songbookdb books online, unfortunately still get the same questions and those that do understand that they are different manufacturers (i explain it as cover bands, some are spot on, others you are halfway through the song before you know what song they are even playing) they put in the notes "pick the best version".

Gidday Bill. You may be better off choosing to not include versions when you import songs into SongbookDB mate, if the constant questions aren't worth the hassle.
