I'm hosting a karaoke party for my friends in a couple of weeks and was hoping for some advice. How do you go about choosing songs for a karaoke playlist? There are tonnes and tonnes of songs! Where do you look for an inspiration? How do you pick songs?

Ask your friends what they want to sing. You also made a post with regard to online streaming services. You could just go with something like that and cover most of the bases.

Have all your music there for people to look through (discs/books whatever you have), but I would suggest you go through and compile a sheet in advance with the "Top 40" songs to get them started, especially if you have a room of karaoke newbies. All the classics that we KJ's are sick of, but still get people singing. "Stop in the name of love", "YMCA", "Sweet Caroline", "You give love a bad name", "Pour some sugar on me", etc etc. We all know the list.

For home, non-commerical use, I would just use YouTube. You can search pretty much any song made in karaoke, and there will be a YouTube version of it, so you don't have to buy anything.

Maybe I need some clarification. Are you looking for songs to have on hand, or will you have all the songs already (maybe through a service) and wish to know which ones to sing? If you are looking for a popular list, here is a thread that has top performed songs in recent months. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=25536Lonman's show tends to run with a younger rock crowd so you'll see a lot of modern rock in his. But all in all these lists can give you a good idea of what is being sung lately at a few places. The Youtube is a good idea, but I have seen several that are just previews. They only play the first 30 seconds or so. That's fine for me as I use it to research songs but it would be a bummer at a house party.

There are tonnes and tonnes of songs! Where do you look for an inspiration? How do you pick songs? Karaoke isn't planned, it's what people want to sing - unless of course you are going for a specific theme (ie all disco songs, all 80's only songs, all metal only, all....etc). As mentioned, ask what people will want to sing and go from there, but chances are if you pre-buy those song in the plans of them singing them - they will probably want to change it and sing something else they may find. If you don't have music now, you can buy music from several places (provided you are using a computer karaoke program for playback), here are a couple that I use. www.allstarcustom.comwww.selectkaraoke.comwww.karaoke-version.comIf you can't find a song someone wants to sing from these 3, chances are good that it isn't out on karaoke or available for you to buy anymore.

What's the Seattle/grunge version of "Sweet Caroline"? "Bodies"?

KArafun's library is the same as karaoke version. Over 17,000 songs to choose from.

I tried the Karafun deal one weekend for a party. The karafun "version" isn't the same as the mp3+G version as far as I could tell. We didn't care for the few songs we chose from the list. My experience was only one weekend and a few songs so please apply as much of a grain of salt as you wish to this opinion.

You need to get out more. I got rid of my last bar on new years eve and only do private parties now. Income went up 30%. Get a bunch of middle aged women in a liviing room drinking wine and you'll hear all of the above, plus plenty more to make you cringe. But this isn't about some bar in Seattle, it's about the OP's desire for private party advice. The point, is to put together a "Top 40" list of songs from their genres that they will like. It all depends on the age/makeup of the private party crowd. Had em sing Crazy B1tch over and over at one, and nothing but Sinatra at another. The OP knows the audience. Make a "suggested songs" list for the people that have no idea what to sing. Songs from artists they know and like. The one I mentioned are some of those "universal karaoke songs" we all love to hate. You know. Dashboard Light. Love Shack. You shook me all night long, etc, but his/her crowd may be completely different. Private parties are a different animal.

I would like to add that a strong collection of duet and multi-singer songs can be a great help. Newbies often like the support of other singers up there with them.

Best songs are what people in that particular crowd want to sing. What is popular in one club may be dust collectors in the bar directly next door. I put up a list every month of what is popular in our place, half or more of the kjs here never even heard of most of them or never hear them. What is the general age group of the bar?

Keeping in mind that all opinions are subjective (beauty is in the eye of the beholder), where is this "best karaoke bar nyc" and who is the KJ (if you happen to know)?
