Although harder to come by these days as they don't just read cdg discs anymore, many of them have options to hook up hard drives & other computer peripherals.

To clarify, modern karaoke players not only read CDG discs, but video, mp3, mpg4, jpeg, and a bunch of other stuff. Actually kind of handy to have in the house.
That being said, I would caution you against trying to sing karaoke through a home entertajnment PA system. Besides sound issues, you could end up with blown speakers or worse.

Thanks you guys / Gals . I hjave a pro PA system so the speakers wouldn't be an issue . We sing thru it all the time , put baxing trax thru it ect .. but I'm just tired of scrambling to scan & print out songs on the fly ,, So everyone trying to follow has a copy ect .. I just need something to read the cdG's 7 display them on a monitor , or my TV .. So I don;t have to do major work before I try to play guitar / major work to the songs ..I'll go check the Ebay .. listings .. thanks .. Kevin

Have you considered just buying a cheap laptop & moving into the computer age of karaoke? Once you rip your discs to your computer, it's done. Then you just play your music w/graphics from the computer. Hooks up just like an external player would into your PA system, and you also have the means to upgrade music via legal purchaseable download sites. allstarcustom.com - you can purchase pre-paid card that can get each song down to $.44 cents each. They also do custom cdg's selectkaraoke.com - download or custom cdg karaoke-version.com - download only but have a great selection of songs never found on any cdg.
With an external standalone cdg player - you HAVE to buy discs which if you only want one song on a disc - you have to get all the others you do not want as well & still pay for it vs just getting the song you want via 1 download into your computer. Very limited as to what you can get - some of companies don't even make discs anymore for cdg players.

Hi, can you tell me , is this RSQ any good ? thanks For the price you could give it a shot. This one supposedly will allow you to rip your discs to an external hard drive as well & you can download from the site I mentioned previously to a flashdrive on your computer and move them over to it - I do not have any direct experience with this one.

Hi, thanks , on the PC & downloading the songs I want . What would be a god cheap laptop . I'd still have to connect the laptop or PC to a tv/ bigger monitor so people can read it . I think with the website thing , you gave me an important key there , thank you ! I just need to figure out the best thing to do for the player . The one I listed there seems to be a few that are used/ new returns , like 4-5 of them ., that doesn't comfort me . I'm going right now to find any reviews on the unit I can . I think as you mentioned if I can download off the net for 0.44 per song thats the way to go & if this RSQ its normal 200.00 w/ remote , but theres 4-5 as I said as returns . kind of scary there , but 50 bucks almost worth the try & as you say I can get custom , or song by song load them to the player , I think I might try that good ideas ,, thanks , Thats what kind of feedback I was looking for , because I'm very limited in my guitar playing , but have worked of specific songs , so that would give me the ability to pick the songs I've worked on . I've notice to get maybe 30-50 songs I'm into , that I'd have to buy a lot of 520 ect . songs on cdG's to get close to what I'm looking for , plus my Mother & her Man , are in their 70's & like the Johnny Cash . Patsy Cline type things & hes a Karaoke guy , So picking & custom made is the way to go for me . I can get what they've have fun with & the ones I need to inspire my playing , that peple will sing as I have company . Sounds like a win / win situation .. thanks buddy .. you have a great day .. I'll post which way I decide to go .
I've noticed that the older RSQ players are way more money . I' was thinking , like everything else , are they made better , last longer ? I've read about players not traxing the words to the songs correctly , I don;t want to get caught up in that , going in circles to find a good player . So with an older player I need the ability to store / hard drive .. files . I'll go look into all this , I don;t know if the older units have the capabilities , that this newer one does . ? thanks & any more info ,, is a plus . I'm off to do research . thanks again ..Kevin

Most laptops today off the shelf are capable of running most of the karaoke software out there. Yes you would want one that has the ability to send the lyrics screen to the TV (extended monitor capable) - which again, most today are. If you DO go that route, add a Lexicon Alpha for the sound quality. Night & day difference over the stock laptop sound card.

Hey , thanks I will look into that . Thr RSQ neo , gets pretty mixed / bad reviews still reading on it . I won 520 songs cdG's ,, on ebay for $14.01.. moving sale or ?.. Just a minute ago , good songs too , from 50's , 60's 70's, 80's hits rock , classic , little blues ,, some country ,, nice score .. I came back here to get the site you mentioned , to buy & create a cdG list off ,, I think I'm going to go w/ a player over the laptop, not sure , but / I just had a 2009 gateway laptop AMD processor go down last month uhhgg ,, would have been perfect , a buddy gave me this tower the , gatewat LP was 2.4 gigs , but faster than this 3.0Gig tower , anyway , I was told the mother board went , maybe it would be worth the 150.00 now to thru a Mother board in it ?. I'lll have to check this out ,, theres one older RSQ player for sale ..I need to look on different sights ,, but on ebay in the link I think the fella put up for me . Its at a music go araound .. it seems very well made , I think it has more than what I need & no remote , maybe I can find one before I bought the player . I'm just finding places to read reviews at this point , but the older stuff seems like it cost more back when it was new & is way better made . I have to go review . that's what I try to do , research before I buy ,. I don't want junk , but can't afford the best stuff , maybe used the fella that posted the links . I forget his user name, I think had it right , like my guitar amps ect . older stuff = better . So I'm into all that .. I keep seeing another brand coming up , like @ American music supply.com .. ect . the big instrument seller online , has this brand I'm talking about ,,I'll post ,, but if there all carrying it , it might be the way to go . So last night I would post on here , it wouldn't show my replys , So if its taking up bandwidth on the forum ,, I'm going to try delete some. On the storing , of the songs you say I can go to that sight & buy 44 cents ,, will I need an outboard hard drive to store them on ? Or does the memory sticks store & there are able to put words on a screen ? I kjust got into this 3 nights ago , So I'm all over the place , but I'll get it . couldn't pass up 520 good songs for 14.01 .. 27 cdG's . So yes I want to get a player because of pricing , I'm pretty sure PC always go down & you loose everything .. plus get some custom , or separate songs from that sight you put up .. thanks ..

Most of us keep our music on external HD so if the computer goes down you still have the songs. Also back up the external so if something happens to the the song drive you have a back up.

Most people (home users & kj's alike) just a use an external hd. A 1 TB hard drive can be bought for under $100 these days so storage space isn't an issue. Also the $.44 cents is if you can find the the right deal at the right time. At this time I can only seem to find a prepaid card that bring the cost down to $.59 per track. Otherwise they are something like $1.99 each if you just buy them outright. If a PC goes down, that's what a back up drive is for. I am a computerized kj since 2008, my computer has crashed (even died to the point of replacing entirely twice) I still have all of my music because they were on separate drives & I have a backup at home. I just don't want to see you getting set on a dying technology. The really good players that were linked to earlier are now over 10 years old since they stopped making them & many service centers won't even work on them anymore.

In answer to the OP's question regarding older players: Yes, the older ones were made better and were more durable. The problem is that in most cases they will only read standard discs, not the newrper ones burned in MP3.
As an aside, pro KJs that don't recommend buying discs kinda make me go "hmmmm". (Not meant for you, cadillac man. An inside thing....)

The best things about using a real karaoke cdg player are the direct play buttons. With the last unit you have shown us you will have to use the remote or use the next, next, next button to get to the track you want.
