As a Karaoke patron, I have always supported ALL the singers, except the REALLY ridiculous ones. There are some that get really drunk and do something like Bodies, and totally seem to seek to destroy the KJ's system. I don't support them. But all other, yes. It's about fun. Is it nice to have a house full of great singers?? YES. But you don't always get that. I won't alienate any singer because they may not be able to sing like a pro.

That is where a good compressor on the vocals come into play! They can scream all they want into that mic, I can even set the setting to go - the louder they scream, the quieter they actually sound over the PA.

If they get THAT stupid I just hit the mute button. They soon get the hint.

Nah, they aren't hurting anything other than their throat. Compressor/limiter is all one needs!

I have the Alesis 3632. Still getting the hang of it, but it does make a big difference in the vocals.

As pointed out a compressor is one of the most important pieces of equipment in a KJ's rack. If you don't have one, get one. The Yamaha "one knob" built in compression helps but it is no where near as good as a stand alone compressor. I'm sure a digital mixer would also have a very effective compressor. My point is .... get one, and learn how to use it. It is not a set and forget tool, but even when poorly attended is way better than nothing. When improperly set it can make you feel like you are working too hard, so learn how to use it.

It's funny, out of EVERYONE that I know, personally, and deal with on a regular basis, I am the ONLY KJ with a compressor. But I am also the only one of the forums that I know. Thanks for the good info, everyone.

Typically around here, it's the kj's who have no experience in music equipment & don't run very good shows that don't have compressors of some sort in their chain. The better kj's typically do.

It's a different world down here, Lon. From what you Seattle folks talk about, it is a TOTALLY different world down here. Much more laid back, and relaxed.

I just like good sound - bottom line, a compressor is one part of that good sound chain, has nothing to do with not being laid back.

But the fact that MY area is laid back could play right into MY hands. I am not looking to become some multi-rigging karaoke mogul, but I would like to have some prominence in my neighborhood. I have already gotten two out of the five places in my little town, and have inroads into a third. Right now it is just a matter of child care. My girlfriend is trying to get switched to first shift at her job, so we don't have to pay out the nose for babysitting. All in good time.

Terrible crowd on Thursday night applause wise, no-one was paying any attention to the singers. All the response I got was a single cheer from one of my friends. Not a solitary clap in the house, despite the KJ delivering the usual "Thank you very much, can we have a big round of applause". Shocking.
