BruceFan4Life wrote: I've been to shows where the KJ sings at the start of every rotation. These shows are usually very well attended and the rotation is usually close to two hours long. Getting skipped ONLY once would turn it into a FOUR hour wait to sing a song. Sorry but the KJ needs to be informed when he skips someone when it happens; not when it happens the second time. If I was singing close to end of the rotation and the KJ starts a new rotation without me getting a chance to sing; he needs to be told about it. It's as simple as that. If he inserts a few "new Singers" in front of me, because that is the way he usually rins his rotation, that is one thing. Starting a new rotation is an entirely different situation. Most singers know when they should be singing. It shouldn't be that difficult for a KJ to keep track of 15 to 20 names. I feel the same way, Bruce. I'm lucky my program doesn't let me skip people unless they forget to give me a song in time as my program automatically turns the singer inactive when there is no song in. I usually will go to the singer and ask if they were planning on singing more long before it's their turn. Usually they put in what they plan on singing for the night and if there is time they add more if they feel like it.

On a very much related note, my ex-venue also said they would not do karaoke any longer, but they are back to it. I've been twice. 99% certain it's a purchased drive\stolen music. The sound is horrible. The guy is nice enough and was very gracious on my return. I went back first only because a dear friend of mine was having a surprise birthday party in his honor. The guy has two monitors but can't look up songs while someone is singing because he doesn't know he can extend the display (so the display is in duplicate mode). I was planning to get out anyway but the irony of this and the OP is dripping.

Almost every bar I do business with has some rule of thumb regarding revenue to profit to payout. Many are approximately 5-7 times what they pay the entertainment for the time period. How could any bar justify keeping something with 5 people going.... Like I said--five singers. Not five patrons. It's a very small family bar, though. I think maximum occupancy might be 60 people. There's only seating for thirty. The average karaoke night gets about forty people, but not a lot of them sing.

You are right on MrBoo, you have to have an idea of the type of crowd you want to attract. This is your target market. The target market I chose to go after was the baby boomer crowd. They are the largest single slice of the current market and will be so for the next ten to 20 years, until they to pass away. I can run basically a Golden Oldies Show, and not have to spend too much on new material, that doesn't get sung any way. As a group they also have the most disposable income, during the last several years of this economic downturn we have been mired in. They are not rowdy and they do spend money on food and drink. Also they are in my generation so I relate well with them. Just a note for smooth the best way I have found out not to have singers come up and ask when are they up, it to have a large board with the names listed. This board is marked with dry eraser so it can be added to and taken off with no lasting effects. Then the singers can see who they are behind and won't bother you. Just remember to keep a matching list at the desk as well, with this double check system I rarely make a rotation mistake. We all blow once in a while at least make the effort to keep it straight and fair and you can't go wrong on the rotation. I love it when a bar does that, especially if it's a really close bar. If I can just see at a glance how many folks are ahead of me, and I know I have time, I can walk home and use my own toilet rather than pooping in the bar, which is my absolute least favorite thing to do.

LONG LIVE SONG SLIPS Yes i know sometimes it happens to even the best host. the difference is I said he CONSISTENTLY does these things.. In other words one or more of them will happen almost every single week. And I know why he loses his place too. Its because his work space is so cluttered, that he loses the slips, or he gets slips that he's already played mixed up with the ones he hasn't yet. -James

I'm not set up in a box. I set up on a table from left to right, Player + Compressor+Karaoke computer, Music computer, board. In front of that I have plenty of room for song slips. Those that DO come up and request songs, I just write it up. Most of my stuff is on computer, and I have all my books on computer, too. My master books are listed by artist, title, AND number, so no matter what kind of ticket I get I can reference it quick.

To answer the OP, NO. I have been to shows like this, left to never return. Host like these are a joke in my opinion.

LONG LIVE SONG SLIPS Also make sure along with turning in a slip, don't just leave it somewhere on/near my area that I might not see it. I have had people drop their slip on the book table or throw it in the tip jar. However that being said, I do require you to bring up (or at the very least tell me) your next song after you sing. I won't be responsible if you do not turn in another slip & you miss your next turn - especially if it's busy. If you are a regular & I have a singer history, I might put something up for your next song automatically.

I also have several people that like to keep their own slips - if not for their own reference, but to know if they have sang or wanted to try a song. Even though I can track it and add new songs easily to their history, they prefer holding onto the slips!

At the risk of being jumped on for being cluttered and low tech--here is my current slips system. There is a clothespin on the rack case for each singer. They can give me a pile of slips in the order they want or tell me to choose. If they change their minds during the evening I just give them their pile to re-arrange and they give it back to me (I also keep track of the order on a dry erase board). As they sing a song I turn the slip face down at the back of the pile. When they leave, I just take their pile and put it back in their envelope which avoids having to re-sort. It gets a bit insane when there are more than 12 singers--then I end up clipping to the tupperware box on the right that holds the laser discs. Yes, I know.....laser discs.

I keep all spent song slips until I shutdown. Some of my regulars want them back to reuse...I am all for that as well. Advantage: Karma. Every time a singer handed me a slip, I type the name in the karma rotation list, (or access from their history), load the requested song, drag & drop to playlist, cued & ready. The slip goes in the used box. No clutter, all slips accounted for. End of the night, wifey collects the regular's request slips, sorted & back to their little request card plastic pouch ready for the next night. Another singer handed me a cd, same thing - I type the name in the rotation list for easy visual reference. Despite all that, mistakes still occur every now & then. A singer will get skipped unintentionally due to multi-task at hand, typing, calling & acknowledging singers in between songs, play bumper music, give every singer the right mix, deal with drunks bothering you every 15 min, answer questions from newbies etc, etc. These are mental & physical distractions where human error is likely to occur. Mistakes happen by situation, not by intention.

At my new gig, I printed slips at the request of the venue owner but with the understanding that I would be training people away from using slips.
I made a few mistakes using the slips. Twice I was handed a stack of slips and while typing their info in, I would get a question from someone else. Once I just set a slip aside thinking I had already entered it. Another, I know I entered the slips in the exact order of the stack, but the group didn't want to sing in that order (more their issue than mine).
I don't like slips. Many people fill them out while they are standing right next to me. Why not just tell me?

Slips are a Karaoke tradition. It's half the fun....digging in books at your table and filling out and bring slips up to the KJ!! Just not the same without them!!

I waaaaayyyyy prefer song slips to any other method of getting a song request to me. For me the likelihood of getting it not just "right", but perfectly executed as per their wishes, is with a song slip. It can be used to solve disputes by being proof of what they requested. Hearing someone's request accurately, in a loud setting, can be a challenge as well.
Multi tasking as Brian pointed out is impossible to do perfectly every time too! There are no sure fire, 100% carved in granite, swear on a Bible methods, but I will put my money on a host taking requests using a song slip is going to get it right more than by verbal. They also serve the purpose of getting additional information such as email, key changes, manufacturer preferences, etc.
If the KJ rack/rig is near the singer it can be very distracting to the singer during their 4 minutes of "owning" the stage.
Let's hear it for SONG SLIPS
