Hi all...... ok so I was at work the other day... and a co-worker and I were singin' christmas songs and carryin on like the lunatics that we are and she wanted to hum part of the song..... a customer happend to be lookin' around the store at the time and I started to try and hum, but my nose was COMPLETELY stuffed up.... blocked off! so I busted out laughing and I said "I can't hum cuz my nose is stuffy.... nothin' comes out" and the snotty customer said "You don't hum through your nose, you hum from your GUT like singing!!!"

SO... here's where the "try THIS" comes in
pinch your nose...... close your mouth...... and hum.... can u do it?? Or am I just crazy? make sure your mouth is closed.

ummm... welll... since when you are humming, by it's very nature you have a closed mouth.. ummm.. there has to be air coming out from somewhere lol. If it can't come out your mouth it's gotta come out of somewheres... so unless your customer friend is using another orafice that I am unaware of, you do INDEED hum through your nose.. the air's gotta come out somewhere hehehe

LOL!

It can't be done....I can hum for like a half a second with the air I have built up....but it is impossible!

If I open up a bit of one nostril....the air has somewhere to go! LOL! How funny!

I agree with Jazzy.... using my husband for an example.. (have you all heard him sing?) He indeed DOES hum (and sing) out of his a$$.

Hey, Here is something, my husband and i CAN do, but none of our friends can. Can you hum a tune, and whistle at the same time?

I think Elisha hit it on the head. The creation of vocal sounds waves (and thus a hum) depends on air molecules being set into motion by air moving through the vocal tract--- and an OPEN nasal cavity is considered to be part of the vocal tract. Therefore, if your mouth is closed and your nose stopped up, there is no where for the air molecules to begin vibrating from the vocal tract or associated resonators. Just a little tidbit I remember from Physics class many moons ago!

You really can't do it? Lol, I bet someone else here can:) it can't be THAT weird:) I had a teacher in school who could too.. but, i don't know anyone else.

If I don't hum an actual tune, and just hummmm it sounds like wind whistling through a window... you know the sound? Anyways, I didn't even learn to WHISTLE until I was 12. That is when I started playing the Trombone. I practiced SOO much when I first got it, that my lips were completely numb and swollen. I blew out, and I whistled. In shock, i tried again, and from that day on, i clued in how to whistle:) Ok. THat was boring:) Lol, I can always whistle best after playing the french horn though:)
