I've been hosting for a couple years now. But in some research about bettering myself as a host. I'm curious about playing in public venues. Is there an actual license that needs to be purchased for playing songs in public? Just like when music is played on the radio. They have to pay BMI and/or ASCAP. In bettering myself I want to make sure I am also following the law. Any one actually have such a thing? I'd love to hear about your experience.

Visit the legalities section of this forum, you will soon learn that all karaoke in public is illegal and therefore requires no special licensing.

Ted... To the best of my knowledge (after doing research myself). If you are hired (sub-contracted out to a Commercial Venue), the venue is required to get the proper licensing.

...If you've contracted to do "Private Events" (such as weddings, birthday parties, block parties, etc.) no licensing is required.

...However, if you decided to run a Commercial Event (such as renting a building or land) to perform then you are required to get the appropriate licenses. Also, if you own a commercial venue (bar, lounge, restaurant, bowling center, etc.) and want to provide karaoke to your customers then again, you must get the appropriate licenses.

...If you're just providing your services then you, as a KJ or DJ for that matter are NOT required to get a license.
