I've not been doing this for very long but over the last couple of weeks have witnessed two really good performances. One of which I luckily caught on my phone. The other was a couple of girls whooping it up doing Waiting All night by Rudimental. Now neither of these would blow your socks off by their musicality (is that a word?) but they, imo, were just what karaoke is about. Enjoyment!

So....which performances have you witnessed that you think were really great, and why ?

Had a group of guys do Men In Tights - complete with choreography! That was pretty funny!

2 cut above performances comes to mind. Mid-60 yr old lady that can really bring the house down, audience to its feet, cheers & wild applause, her powerful rendition of “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going”.

The other, guy doing “Rapper’s Delight” & what’s exceptional about that was he will rap the entire 7 min song without looking at the screen monitor. Not even a glance, no mistakes with remarkable timing. Impressive!

We have a couple guys that do that as well, one even does some ad lib at the end over the outro.

What would impress me more on Rappers is if I can see 3 guys sing it as it was originally a 3 vocal part.
At least the 'original' version of that song is not available, it was 16 minutes long lol!

We had a tiny lady in her mid-fourties go through a wonderful metamorphosis onstage with Debbie Gibson's "Lost in Your Eyes". She wes shy and fairly reluctant to come onstage. When the song started she seemed a little confused but stuck with it. Once she got going she started warming up, and by the keychange she was in full stride with a full, creamy, and surprisingly well controlled voice. She belted out the rest of the song and sort of slid back into the audience.

Kind of an Andy Kaufman thing...

Had a kind of frowzy looking middle-aged woman come into a rowdy biker bar and belt out Etta James' "At Last".

The noise level first went from high to "pin-drop" during the performance, and actual jaw-drops from these folks. Then a standing few minutes long ovation.

A Keeper....

I have an 85 year old man (Nino) who comes to my Friday shows. The highlight of the evening is almost always when he belts out "My Way" with everything he's got. People rush up to the "stage" area with their cellphone cameras and the people who haven't seen him before go absolutely berzerk.

Nino was an entertainer in his youth and he still has all the polish and stage presence of a pro. I've seen him perform the song many times, but I have to fight back tears every time he sings that song and then I just have to hug him when he's done.

There is a girl I know that does a mash up against "Smells Like Teen Spirit". If I remember correctly there are 4 total songs mashed into it.

Smell Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
Billy Jean - Michael Jackson
Humpty Dance - Digital Underground
???? - ????

She dropped by my Friday gig and did is two nights ago. It brings the house down every time. Someone recorded it and I will try to get a video.

At a recent karaoke Competition one of the contestants did Joe Cocker's You are so Beautiful. He did it while pretending to be drunk. While this may not seem at first thought that interesting he pulled it off perfectly. he appeared on stage holding a Vodka bottle one shoe missing. If I didn't know Bret I would have said he really was drunk. He has a great voice and sounded just like Cocker, it was an amazing performance.
It was enough to win him second place.

My all-time fav was my wife. She is a nurse, maternity at the time, Sunday school teacher, and was about 6 months pregnant with our 5th child. She did "Fields of Athenry" by the Dropkick Murphys (OK, they didn't write it, but it was their version) and really rocked it.

I saw this tiny little woman dressed in jeans and cowgirl boots get up and rock "Zombie" once on veteran's day. She started out saying "This is a song for the veterans," and we were expecting "God Bless the USA" or something. She had all the yodels and everything down! It got standing ovation and not a few waving flags!

Although I've witnessed many great performances over the years, the one that really stands out took place just this past Friday evening 1500 miles from here. I was on vacation in Sydney, Nova Scotia. (For the geographically-challenged, that's on Canada's east coast. LOL)

At any rate, I found a karaoke venue at a local Royal Canadian Legion, and witnessed a middle-aged man take on Vince Gill's "Look At Us". The guy absolutely blew me away. If I didn't know better, I would have thought it was Vince Gill in the flesh.
