I have made bulk disc and equipment buys and I tell when they come from areas that allow smoking in venues. The discs and equipment will have an odor and a sticky film on them.
With the equipment, all you can do is wipe it down with a good disinfectant or a very diluted bleach solution.
I take the discs and put them in a sink and soak them in cool water. This also easily identifies paper label counterfeits when the labels smear or slough off.
We have a beer patio at my place that allows smoking. If I see a singer come in from the patio to sing on their turn, I give the mic a quick spray from very conspicuous can of Fresh Linin Scent Lysol I keep next to my DJ stand. I do this about once an hour anyway, but I do it after smokers and screamers as well.
(I have heard the caution about drying out diaphragms etc by spraying directly on the mics, but I have been doing this for 3 years with no issues and my Dallas KJ friend has been doing it for 20 years with no issues. The mics will get damaged from misuse before they will from being LIGHTLY sprayed and wiped down.)

I sang my first karaoke song in feb of 2007. I quit smoking 12-14-2007. I'm glad smoking is banned in most places. Wish it were just illegal but that's another debate. I have one gig where smoking is allowed. I keep a small table on stage off to the side for drinks and cigs. Never been a problem as far as wrecking my equipment (cept the smell of course). Fortunately for me, I don't bring my PAs in, I use the bar's at this place. Always nice to open the trailer and smell an ashtray.
if I were a singer/smoker, and came to the stage in a smoking establishment, and the host told me no smoking on stage, I could respect that. It's only for 5 minutes or so, wait till the darn song is over for crying out loud!
