Talk about a weird reason for picking up new singers......


I've been getting a BUNCH of new folks due having a large collection of folk songs from my early days. MTA from the Kingston Trio, I'll Never Find Another You from the Seekers, Crooked Little Man from the Serendipity Singers, stuff like that- which haven't been used in YEARS. I don't know where the revival is coming from, but it has been sending me kick-a$$ business for the last month or two- no one else seems to have them but me.

I'm just posting because I thought it was strange....

How about "A Little Bitty Tear" by Burl Ives? I've had it sung at least a half-dozen times by different people over the past several weeks.

Mumford & Sons may have peaked modern interest. But I know people in their 30s who are currently obsessed with Joan Baez and Bob Dylan and reading about that era. I've been having Peter, Paul & Mary "Puff" and "Leaving On A Jet Plane" done regularly again.

Joe, “I’ll Never Find Another You” by the Seekers is popular again @ my show. Last month a lady dedicated this song to her husband celebrating his 65th birthday. He was in a wheelchair frail looking, oxygen tank, suffering from a debilitating illness, but in very good spirits. She sang her heart out, tears rolling down her face holding his hand, eye contact thru the entire song. What an emotional sight.

BRIAN: I actually love and have been singing that song since I was in my teens, I think.

I'm of the feeling that folk, being somewhat easier to sing in many ways , and evoking some actual feelings, might be just what the doctor ordered for karaoke. It's just strange seeing 25-30 year olds perform it

As for me, no problem- I grew up with it, and have always enjoyed it. I hope it skyrockets.

Speaking of that, I wonder about how it might be delineated. Would one consider the ( relatively) newer Seasons In The Sun or Billy Don't Be A Hero folk?

Not really a Mumford fan, but PP&M and Pete Seeger are favs... LOVE Kingston Trio's Reverend Mr. Black.....

Do you have any Lumineers on karaoke? That tends to get the earnest/not-really-heavy-lifting-singingwise contemporary folk thing down.

Ho hey is starting to pick up steam abit. Plus there's Ryan Adams, Tom O'Dell, Passenger, even some Michael Bublé (easy listening rather than swing numbers) and Mumford & Sons as mentioned earlier. And Somebody that I used to know is a song that will probably never go away. It could be modern stuff like that which is reigniting the interest in old folk, including 60s revival stuff. Good, because if I hear one more Edd Shearen song I'll kill myself.

Hey Ho still gets some play. The Gotye song never gets done anymore here. Some Mumford & Sons songs still do.

I have sung Gotye's I feel better to good reception every time, especially at the club karaoke, even though the song itself doesn't appear to be that well known. Mind you it's nothing like Somebody i used to know, far more cheerful!

The modern ballads are encouraging people toward folk/acoustic a bit too. Said club has a huge Bruno Mars following so invariably When I was your man gets done. Skyfall is still clinging on too.

Monday night attracts people singing more chilled out songs, and therefore more folk. The likes of Norah Jones and Katie Melua are usual suspects. You're more likely to hear acoustic country music as well as oldies, if you can count All I have to do is dream, although the Everlys did flirt with bluegrass.

The best "comeback" ever is Hostess Twinkies. We could care less about folk music, Twinkies rule!

I will tell you my opinion on this.

BANJO'S DO NOT BELONG IN ROCK & ROLL.

Giving "I will wait" a Grammy for BEST ROCK SONG is an absolute ABOMINATION reminiscent of Jethro Tull winning in the Heavy Metal category a few years back. There should have been rioting in the streets!

Take your felt hat, suspender wearing, jug band, hillbilly music and stay out of Rock & Roll!

OK. I feel better.

Neither do bagpipes, but that didn't stop AC/DC !

Curious: I know Dennis DeYoung played the accordion as a kid, but what Styx song has an accordion IN it? Must not be very prominent if true.

Read an interview with Dennis one time. He got so used to keyboard keys he had a hard time with the smaller accordion keys on that one. That song was huge in Europe I believe, but not much here. I can promise you won't see an accordion in a styx concert today. Styx touches as little of Dennis' stuff as they possibly can and the DD replacement made them promise that he wouldn't ever have to do Babe.

I just watched the Grand Illusion Pieces of Eight concert just the other night. Think I'll do a few Styx songs!

I was going to buy a few of their pies at walmart last week and every one of them were seeping through the package making them all a soggy mess. I was there again yesterday, found fresh new boxes, and everyone was the same as the last batch - a disgusting soggy mess.
I prefer the Little Debbie pies anyway - delicious.
