Whatever the case, there's definitely a difference using a BBE. And while it may be similar to the "smiley face" eq that you speak of, it is sonically different, possessing a nice "presence" to the sound.
In any case, I think they're fine and live up to their promise.
And you could do the exact same thing (and more) with a parametric equalizer.

It's been proven over and over that the "bypass" button doesnt bypass anything. It intentionally makes the signal WORSE than with no BBE at all. I'm sure you hear a different when you press it. But it's not reality. Now tell me. Why would they do that? Hmmm?
