If I had a slip without a number, I would look it up well in advance of that name coming up so there wouldn't be any dead air (when running discs). Having two players also helped, I would cue up one while the other was playing.
I also had a sign that basically stated 'we will gladly look up your song and write it down, $1 service charge' on top of a big smiley face. I never enforced it, but some would throw a buck in the jar anyway!

How did/do you handle multiple manus of same song / duplicates?
I never listed duplicates in the books! 1 version only, usually SC was the main goto, otherwise whatever I had. I had a main book by me that had all the songs including dups just in case I needed to use an alternate, otherwise I just used the regular book that the singers use so I knew what number to pull.

then there are those that incorrectly transpose just the song i.d. number, and the wrong song is loaded for performance, and has to be searched, changed, restarted on the fly... dead air...
I always double checked the song before loading to make sure it was the song written down so it wouldn't come up in your scenario.

Ditto here, Lon! Am referring to slips being handed to me right there & then on stage & they’re up next, hence dead air while I look it up. If I go over 15 sec & still can't find it I'll call the next singer. :)

Oh yes, the last minute change - that's what fill music is for lol . When I was disc based, if it was cued up, it didn't get changed. Now I don't mind as much with the computer, only takes a quick search and add to playlist.

I have no issue swapping a song at the very last minute. Let them sing what they really want to sing. I can swap a song out in just a few seconds.

With computer it really is no big deal. It was more of an issue with discs. I agree. People swap out their songs for numerous reasons. Often time to fit with the flow of the music - usually changing a slow ballad into an upbeat dance song to keep people on the floor. Or other times people have switched at the last minute because they saw someone come in and would like them to sing the song instead. Lastly, fear of doing a new song lol.
