Because I own a pro disc resurfacer, I have no problem making bulk buys at garage sales and other used discs.
Today I was going through my box of such buys to either add to my collection or discard/give away.
Occasionally I run into discs that are so bad that I simply snap them so I don't accidentally use them or give them to friends.
Examples: BS9817 (Michael Jackson), ASK1008 (country), IM1009 ( I pretty much snap ANY Idol Makers), and SC8154 and 2473 ( Elvis- despite my stance on SC, I always say they made a nice product, except for butchering Elvis).
What bad buys/acquisitions have you made lately?
Another question: Mixed Hits? Found 5 of these, and they look like Karaoke Warehouse discs, except no codes- that is to say they look like counterfeits and were low quality, so I snapped them too. However, I'm wondering if Mixed Hits is a label that I never heard of, or simply a title that they stuck on the discs?

Never found anything at the Goodwill (or any thrift store). Best buy I ever made was from e-bay, 100 unopened SC discs for $20, most of which I needed. This was a few years ago, never found anything even remotely similar since.

The best buys will typically be found at estate sales or through buying out KJ's that have been out of the business for many years and aren't up to speed on the current karaoke climate.
My best buy ever was $500 for 2000 karaoke discs. Every manufacturer under the sun with a number of great discs. That batch had an SC8125 in it along with many other hard to find SC discs.
I also paid $100 for a DK1-99 set that is pristine.
The key is patience and haggling. There is a guy I know that has about 3000 discs. He started out wanting $10/disc and says he will only sell as a full lot. That's $30,000 he wants. I have been working on this guy for *2 years* and he is now down to $5/disc. I will continue to work him until I get him down to $2/disc before deciding to pull the trigger or keep haggling.

Not sure why you would snap any disc though, just put them in a box. You could probably sell them, people looking for original discs in any condition are out there.

when we moved last year we sent to the dump an entire Extra LARGE trashcan of snapped discs...a few damaged ones but mostly copies...sadly we found out too late that some Manus had changed labeling often and at least a third of those we snapped were legal (after the fact).

I did an ebay auction and got over 1300 cd's for $2100 the picture showed what looked like a complete dk1-99 set, but when I opened the case and checked disc's only about 10 of the dk disc's real.
I sent the seller info that he had sold me pirated material. he promptly came back and offerend me $600 back...
so ended up with over 1200 original manufacturer disc's for $1500 and 2 cd road cases.
then I took the 600 back and bought a set of dk original 1-85 for $700

What does a disc resurfacer like that run these days? I don't KJ, but I have DVDs and CDs that are pretty worn down. Or would it be cheaper to replace, say, 12 DVDs or so?

The other part is if there are pinholes or scratches on the label side don't bother just get a new one.

If they are small enough pinholes, you can sometime doctor those up as well - it may leave a little graphic artifact, but I've fixed some discs that skipped with pinholes on the label side.

From the OP: Does anyone know if "Mixed Hits" was ever an actual label, or was that designation simply stuck on the ( I believe counterfeit) set that I described?

I have a pretty extensive database I have built on manufacturers and I have not seen a "Mixed Hits" brand. Perhaps you can take a pic and attach? -Chris
