Ok I'm tired of listening to you.
There is No way that I would ever fake a PC crash. I haven't had a PC crash in years.
9 times out of 10 the singers don't know what they think they are hearing. what comes through the monitors is NOT usually what comes through the main speakers. The Object is to make the singer sound good to the audience. Chances are that if you are the only one bitching, then the problem is with you.
The solution for you is simple for you MAX. You think you can do better? You think you know what sounds good? then go buy some music , A sound system and get your own gig and quit bitching about what other hosts do. I'm glad you're not in my area, because you would not be tolerated at my show by myself or the crowd. people like myself and Lon, have been doing karaoke for well over a decade. We KNOW what to do to make the show sound good. If you don't want to host your own show and you don't like the way a KJ is running a show that you are at, then go to another show.
WOW the guy was expressing what it is about many KJ's that he dislikes and it really hit home with someone. I happen to agree with him. I have a karaoke partner that would ask for something to be changed for her. Only about half the time did the host make any type of change. and 90 percent of the time I agreed with her. Too much bass in the mic, sounding muddy, or Vocals are sounding flat, no echo or reverb. But the host was the expert with their ability to turn on a computer and hook it to a amp and speakers. And as a Long time Karaoke Singer. If I ask for less bass in the mic or more reverb and the host blows me off or my friends. I'll be blogging about it. Yelp and google reviews etc. And as a Host, Not only will I give them what they ask for. But, followup with the customer to ensure I gave them enough of what they asked for. Why is doing that so difficult to do for most hosts? Seems a little thing to make a customer happy?

ripman8 wrote: Max, for two weeks you've been running hosts down with this thread. Over and over you have explained to us how we are there to serve the singers/customers. We should bend over backwards to make them happy. It doesn't matter if we think it sounds good as long as the singer thinks it sounds good. ...
Why is it so many Karaoke hosts are taking this guys issue so personal. If you don't do that he is mentioning why should it bother so many so much. You've obviously never been in a market that over run with karaoke hosts with a home stereo and computer selling their hosting services that couldn't ad more reverb to their mix if they wanted to. And the venues that are hired in are more then happy to put on the marquee they have karaoke but only seem to have two or three singers come in then claim Karaoke doesn't work in their bars. shoot There's a Bar here that will only pay 75 bucks a night and the guy they have plays youtube videos and calls it Karaoke and calls himself a KJ. I'm blown away. If the guy gets too much reverb because he asked for it. Do think anyone when they leave are going to even remember that or even care? Now granted if you turn it up too loud they will remember that. I like a lot of echo on certain songs and will ask for it. In the Air Phil Collins and One more Try George Michael. And the hosts that have done it for me. Haven't had any complaints. Matter of Fact. I've seen other people try the songs and ask for the same thing now. WOW! If the other customers didn't like it they wouldn't be asking for the same things. Hosting is fun, making customers happy is fun. Why is that too much to ask?

Lonman wrote: Which is the problem. Most kj's that steal don't treat this as a business to begin with, but a way to get some beer money in their pockets so they don't care - they buy a preloaded drive and crap equipment & charge a bar $50 to run a show. The kj's that are worth going to see (the ones that will adjust for the singers ) are the ones that typically take the business seriously, and put some real money into it - with both equipment & music - buying legal material. And yes a good kj CAN recoup their investment within a year or two (just like any other business). RIGHT ON DUDE!! Bar owners are a weird bunch too. It's amazing what they will hire as a KJ and then try to say they have KARAOKE. I already mentioned it But we have a KJ and I slap myself for even referring to him as that. Who is actually getting away with playing youtube videos in his live show right off the internet. And that is really his library! Another Bar I rarely go to the bar owner has said he don't like or even want karaoke but has it because his customers have asked for it. WOW, just going in on karaoke night will explain why it's dead. You are so on the money about taking the business serious and investing. The biggest problem is these clowns with illegal downloads and a laptop that think they are Karaoke hosts because they have a 10 dollar microphone and a dual mixer.

I got thinking about this whole thread. I've found that the Majority of the KJ's using this board are the better of the best. They are the ones who take karaoke serious, are concerned with customers. So I can see why some take it so personal. I learned a long time ago. If someone isn't talking about me Directly then it doesn't apply. When my man max here says Many or Most Karaoke hosts. He is probably correct. MOST. Since there are so few that I have run into that even know how to use their karaoke program. I know quite a few that two years ago didn't know how to import songs into their computers. because they worked for a bar that someone else brought in their illegal updates and updated their system. All's they did was look up songs and play them. No training on using the mixer, or on using the computer.
So when people make blanket statements about most or even many. Don't take things so personal. Because if you're on this forum. Your probably in the 1/2 of 1% of hosts that want to be the best and work to continually better yourself and your systems. And I would hope when customers or potential customers to your shows make their frustrations known the best of the best hosts on this forum would be a bit more understanding and sympathetic to the plight of what is happening to the business.
Bar owners are now trying to go to a Karaoke juke box under the direction of Bar Rescue and think they are providing karaoke. I'm disappointed in Taffer for his putting down the karaoke industry and what (when done correctly) can be a entertaining and worth while event at their bar. Its tuff selling your services with the amount of lousy KJs/hosts are out there giving karaoke a bad name.

This just came across my Facebook from a karaoke group....
"Last week we started Karaoke around 10ish."
In that case, when I get asked what song I want to sing, I am going to start saying, "Something Billy Joelish".
I have never understood why some karaoke hosts feel they can start late on a whim.

I have never understood why some karaoke hosts feel they can start late on a whim. Sometimes, the KJ doesn't have a choice. I've been to many karaoke shows that didn't start on time because the Bar had a Baseball/Football/Hockey/Soccer/you-name-it game on their TVs, and would make the KJ wait until the game ended before starting their show. Then, of course, there's the Krapioke Host who just comes in at the last minute and starts setting up when the show was supposed to start.

I totally get the whole sports delay thing. I believe most patrons understand as well. But I go the extra mile of looking at sports schedules and announcing/advertising we may have delays on certain nights if games run late.
It is the KJ's that start late and never announce anything.
I know the world doesn't revolve around me, but when I do have the opportunity to do karaoke, I try to hit a few places in the same evening. That means showing up at the first place before start, maybe eating a meal and trying to sing early so I can maybe get a second song in before moving to the next venue. Plenty of times over the years I show up 1-2 hours before hand to do just that only to have the karaoke show start 30-60 mins late.

Cue Ball Thank you for the vocabulary lesson. Krapioke Host. I'm kicking myself that I hadn't put that together myself. That was just plain Genius.
