I am looking to make a purchase of some top songs from the past year, both country and pop. Would anyone care to offer their list of "must get" songs? I have been out of the music loop for so long I don't have much clue.

I have a few I know for sure:

1. Mama's Broken Heart
2. Downtown
3. Blurred Lines

Can anyone help me fill this list out, especially ones that are popular with singers?

Mama's Broken Heart is a request in our parts. No one has done the new Lady Antebellums--still getting "Need You Now" and "Just A Kiss.". I could make you a list of hot songs from last year that I think they should have done but here are the ones they actually did:

Eric Church: Creepin' and Springsteen
Rhianna: Stay
Cups: Anna Kendrick
Next To Me: Emili Sand
Gangnam and Red Solo Cup came and went although both got a revival last week.
Some Nights: Fun (kid shows only)
Bruno Mars: When I Was Your Man
Pink: Try, Just Give Me A Reason,
Startships: Nicki Minaj (21-30 age group only)
Little Big Town: Tornado and Pontoon
Darious Rucker: Wagon Wheel

Thank you oh bespotted one. I went and got most of those. I was looking for the recent thread about what people where seeing sung at their shows, but couldn't find it.

I am not surprised you don't see any of those, Lonnie. Blurred Lines is brand new. On the other two, your gig is about as country as a Manhattan deli....

Any more suggestions from anyone?

I know I could never sing it, but man, if "Blurred Lines" is the catchiest damn song I've heard in a while.

I bought Wagon Wheel because of all the interest here only - never had a request for it. Have had it since March, not one person has sung it to date. I did find it odd since Hootie & The Blowfish gets done fairly regular.

Few of my local KJs have Get Lucky yet, but I sung if off one of my discs last Friday (Sing to world version, best version available IMHO although Zoom is good too) and the club went crazy for it. SBI/Abraxa have released the other new Daft Punk song Lose yourself To Dance, I can see that catching on well too.
SIDENOTE: I've noticed these venues (chiefly twentysomething-year-old-audience night clubs) respond well to Baseballs songs, and other unusual covers of very popular mainstream songs. This KJ even added The Baseballs version of Chasing Cars to her filler music playlist after I sang the karakoe version to the crowd once. They also loved my somewhat OTT performance of "Cut the cake".

Recent song I would suggest investing in:
Robin Thicke : Blurred lines
Stooshe : Slip (again STTW rocks, but stay away from Sunfly version of this)
Bastille : Pompeii
Gotye : I feel better
Mavericks : Back in your arms again (only Karaoke-Version available right now)
Rudimental : Feel the love
Michael Bublé : It's a beautiful day
Cee-lo Green : Anyway
Kasey Musgraves : Merry-go-round
Muse : Madness
Killers : Runaways
Paul Carrack : Good feeling about it
Pet Shop Boys : Leaving
Rod Stewart : It's over
David Bowie : Where are we now
Pink : Just give me a reason
Anything recent by Rhianna
Anything recent by Olly Murs
Anything recent by Toylor Swift
Anything recent by Emeli Sandé, Adele, The Wanted, Cheryl Cole and Avicii

Other popular fairly recent karaoke songs in my area include...
Bruno Mars : Locked out of heaven
Taylor Swift : I knew you were trouble
Little Mix : D.N.A.
Foster The People : Pumped up kicks
Katie Perry : Wide awake
Rebecca Ferguson : Nothing's real but love
Lady Gaga : Alejandro
Coldplay : Paradise
Bruno Mars : When I was your man

It is funny how there are regional differences. I have had the Old Crow "Wagon Wheel" on my request list for 3 years (it was done by MM but never found it for sale anywhere) and when Darius Rucker's version came out it was done immediately and brought down the house. Whenever it comes up on the bumper music people go crazy.

Similar story with "Save the last dance for me". I have sung the Drifters version to little enthusiasm, but everyone's up and dancing when somebody starts singing the Michael Bublé version.

Passenger - let her go
Bruno Mars - When I was your man
Olly Murs - Dear darling, Troublemaker, Army of two
Pink - Try
Emile Sande - Clown

Just a question--has anyone ever had a male sing Bruno Mars "When I Was Your Man?" It has all been the ladies singing it at my show. Actually it is been the ladies singing the "Lazy Song" and "Grenade" also. Could be due to the range but I think on "When I Was Your Man" the ladies have a special relationship with that song.

I think range is definitely a factor. Bruno Mars has an amazing voice and is beyond what I am capable of singing on anything but the best of days. I have been practicing "When I Was Your Man" and I have to drop it 2-3 for practice if I want to keep my voice.

No one has actually tried it at my show yet, but we do get a lot of cross-gender singing at my place. I sing a lot of female lead songs myself.

I've had a couple guys sing this one, but most have been girls singing the Bruno Mars stuff.
