All I gotta say is if I hear "Picture" or Redneck Woman" more than once a night I get sick.
I think sometimes it depends on a song.
There are only so many duets that the majority of people know.
ie; summer nights, picture, paradise, etc.
Alot of "karaoke virgins" seem to prefer a duet the first time for moral support, and I love it when a newbie sings for the first time , and so does the crowd, so my point is there are alot of variables to consider as opposed to making a clear cut rule on the subject.

I started a new theme at my sunday venue. "NEW SONG SUNDAY"
I simply refused to let people sing a song they have sung in the past.
The first week was rough, but now it is the most popular attraction I have.
No more weekly singing contest, they all just have fun now and try to come up with some pretty obscure titles to sing. Not to mention alot of new singers dont feel near as intimidated. Give it a try. Its alot of fun

Awesome! I used to do a Sunday show that I called, "Crash & Burn Sunday." My goal was to try some new songs in the book or songs that I have may have sang once before and needed to work on.
Oh and back on subject of this thread on songs more than once per night. I try and encourage them to try something else, but if they really "have to do" this song, I try and space it out at least one rotation or nearly 1.5 to 2 hours away.

If a new singer comes up with a song that has been sung, I will alow it as long as it is spaced out. I remember how hard it was for me to bring my first slip up. Many songs ago .

I agree with kjgreg's opening post and with Knightshow's post. I'm in FL now, but I started singing in NY. At the better shows (the only ones I would go to), that was absolutely the rule...and ONLY if the original singer was LONG gone might an exception be made. Everyone agreed it was a good rule

I hear and understand, but that still doesn't account for the groans you hear from the audience when they have to sit thru the song again.
oh well, opinions are very subjective. Mine is subjective to giving people headaches! !

Picture Im cutting that freakin song out of my rotation. Every woman thinks shes Cheryl Crow ,and can do it better than so and so.
I swear it gets requested atleast 5 times per night. I allow it twice and then i piss off the "cheryls" that wanted to do it.

If you want to host you better get used to people singing favourite songs ad nauseum. This year Picture, last year Love Shack, next year who knows.

On the topic of Picture.
What gets me the most is when you call the two up and anounce their going to do picture. The guy looks over at me and ask"How does this start again"?
