I run it the same way I expect hosts to run it. I would never consider counting a duet as two peoples turns at once. 1st name on the slip is the person whose turn it is. I have read everyone's comments on the subject and still don't understand the reasoning. So i would definitely agree with leopard lizard, frede, cueball and a few others.
Someone above posted this scenario.
I used to do as you guys, but it started getting abused to the point it needed to be stopped.
John & Suzy Suzy & Tom Jerry Betty & Suzy Ed & Suzy
I would have to say. SO WHAT! John used his turn, Suzy used hers to sing with Tom, Betty used her turn, Ed got to use his turn. From what I can see Tom never put in a song. and still has a turn available in the rotation.
What I don't allow but have considered, is someone requesting a song for a singer to sing. But, I'm pretty much completely opposed to that. I have a friend who is a host and has a tendency to sing more than the customers and her claim is that people ask her to sing. Drives me nuts. As when my show gets started. Once I get five singers in the rotation I run the show. I'm not the show. If I want to be the show I'll go out myself to a karaoke bar.
I just don't see the issue or the problem with it. Usually if someone does have a problem it is because they do not understand how a rotation works. Letting people know and helping them understand how it works is the key. With me it works on each person gets one turn in a rotation. A turn is a song they submit. I would never consider penalizing a customer because someone wants to sing with them.
When I go to Karaoke and want to sing a duet with someone, (esp if I've never sang with them before) why would I ask them to lose their turn in order to sing with me. A host that does that to me or them: I immediately complain, then if no satisfaction that place goes on my do not return list. And I hit the Yelp reviews. As a customer I find it very offensive to punish someone else for me wishing to sing a duet with them. Or Myself losing a turn and having to wait another hour or so to sing the song I wanted to sing. And I see no other logical way of looking at it then as punishment for singing a duet.
Now have I seen it where someone seems to get to sing more than everyone else. Yes I have. There was a pretty big party a while back at JW's in Flint and a couple times a group got up to sing twice in a rotation. (this happens every now and then) and a couple people in the group got to sing their own songs. I was not in the least bothered or offended by them getting up there or seeming to have got to sing more. In all actuality THEY DIDN"T.
NOW I have Karaoke Rotations on the brain when I am the customer. Even drunk at a bar I am usually more on top of the rotation and whose turn it is even if the host isn't. Believe me. I've been given a nick name I can't use on this board. Because, if the host does play favorites with their friends. I am the first one to point it out. And then point out where they were in the rotation and ask why they are being moved ahead. I keep hosts honest. BTW I usually ask why first. I don't get confrontational until they challenge me. When that happens I get reinforcements, I check with others who were skipped to get their reactions. So yes, I do sometimes deserve my nickname.
But when I host shows I want to make sure ever body has a great time and gets to sing. That's my priority. And whether a person sing six duets in a rotation as long as they were singing with someone's turn. I don't see it as a problem and haven't had any one complain. The only thing I can say is Ive had customers who have been places where they penalize people for singing duets and these people where thrilled and because loyal customers. Amazing how people love ya when you are about them being the center of attention and not me as the host.
